The Oval -First digital handpan and the iPad -it plans to be Audiobus compatible, only 12 days left

Hey guys,
I've just backed the Oval on Kickstarter. There's only 12 days left to back this project and take advantage of the discount. As you all know, it will work with the iPad. If enough supporters back this project, its app will be Audiobus compatible right off the bat. If not, I'm sure it will be compatible at some point, anyway.

This news might not be of interest to most people here, but I know there are a few who are currently working on projects involving handpans, tongue drums, etc. I think this will be essential to perform live. And the app seems very versatile. You can choose other sounds, change the scale, and you can add your own samples.

I've just finished an album using two steel tongue drums and I can tell you that the oval could've save me a lot of time if it had been available earlier. I could have sampled my drums once and not worry about mic placement or noise getting in the recording. I usually worked on my project during the evening and tracking in an apartment late at night was not feasible. And tracking during the day in a non soundproofed room was also a challenge.

Anyway, just wanted to give a heads up to those who were considering the Oval and were not aware that the Kickstarter ends in less than two weeks.

  • Ok, so this makes it relevant to more people, the oval is also a MIDI controller that can be used outside of its own app. Meaning, it can trigger other iPad apps as well as instruments in your desktop DAWs. It is also Bluetooth.

  • @fjcblanco -Thanks, I didn't realized this had been discussed before. There's only 11 days left, though, so a little reminder won't hurt anybody ;)

  • We live in some amazing times right now with all of these sound tools at our disposal. I can't wait to see what people do with these things.

  • I was going to back this when they first announced it, but was annoyed that it can't be used without either a computer or iDevice. I have both of those things of course, just don't like the idea of being dependent on them...

  • @Martygras -Yes, indeed!

@Zymos -I see your point, but that could also be an advantage. The app and other software it works with will always be upgraded and improved. I love the fact that I can trigger samplers and drum kits with it as well, so at least it can be used outside of the app. And the app itself promises to be really nice too. It will have a 4 track loop recorder and will include FXs like delay. And the Oval will never, ever get out of tune. The hang, for example, has to be retuned every so often. Imagine that ;)

As we know, OS updates can render apps useless, that's my concern. I realize, unless they basically built a computer inside the thing, that an app allows way more features than if it only spit out MIDI.

My Idiopan should be coming in 1-2 weeks!

    Nice! That'll keep you busy...
