CDs SHOULD sound better than LPs, but they were the perfect vehicle for the loudness wars.
@syrupcore said: All that said, the convenience of digital music just can't be beat. When a record starts skipping the second you sit down to dinner it's easy to see why digital music got popular!
I still HEAR the skip in Ticket To Ride that my dad's LP suffered from. Even when I hear the song on the radio, I brace for the skip. It's not possible to fix this in my brain, as far as I know.
I'm sure Timothy Leary has some ideas.
Can't speak for Sonos, but I use AirPlay to connect to any combination of 4 sets of Klipsch speakers (3 in the house, one pair on the deck) and it's a wonderful thing.
Show off. And we all know you're too posh to have a deck. What you have is a terrace...
@JohnnyGoodyear Well, they're cheap Klipsch, but, yeah, well, OK, it is more like a flower box than a deck, but it all works great as long as nobody turns on the microwave.
Well shoot, I should have asked him when I saw him speak here at South Eugene High School, you know, BEFORE HE DIED.
That's ok. Robert Anton Wilson wrote it all down in a book called Prometheus Rising.
Hey guys I've been on the road traveling to see my sister for the holidays. This is a great discussion.
@Diode108 Yes there are advantages to vinyl, skipping and all. Especially with music from the 60's and 70's like the Motown records and classic rock. I had a friend who was only 22 and he had all of the Beatles records. He had a vintage turntable, amp, and speakers. Awesome!
@eustressor Klipsch are awesome speakers, especially when paired with a good sub! I have an Onyoko receiver coming in the mail to replace my 10 year old Denon. It has Air Play.
How do you hook up your Klipsch speakers? Are they built with WIFI or do you have to connect them to a separate box?
I have an Onkyo multimedia receiver. For movies, two front, two back, center voice speaker, and subwoofer. Usually I go down to stereo for music. Tempted to get a few old quad recordings though. It's been so long since I listened to quad!
I've never listened to a quad recording but I've always wanted to! Did they release some on DVD?
@mkell424 Lots of releases on lots of formats. LP, CD, SACD, DVD, Blu-ray.
Cool. Thanks for pointing that out. Any quad recordings that you recommend? If I'm not mistaken it was an early to mid 70's phenomenon.
Interesting thread, I need a new stereo but wouldn't know where to start with all this new fangled watchamacallits. I'm off to google 'sonos'
There are many good threads. I was pretty young when it was popular. It seemed like magic to me. I don't have any recommendations. But here's a starting thread... http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/albums-that-were-recorded-for-quadraphonic-sound.342374/
Agreed. Did the Pepsi Challenge with Bose years ago and they were so outshined by Klipsch. All mine are plugged into various Airport/Airport express or Apple TV units to receive AirPlay. Powered speakers in the bedroom and studio, no name 100 watt receivers for the flowerbox and living room sets. My surround system in the living room are actually Energy speakers, a subsidiary of Klipsch and every bit as nice sounding. All except the outdoor set have subwoofers.
I once heard Frank Zappa's quad release of Apostrophe on a nice quad system and swear I saw God
@eutressor
I was a salesman in a high end stereo store in my youth and we didn't carry Bose. They were a rival so we salesmen had a saying "No Highs no lows just Bose". :-)
I it's think is true because I've seen many demonstrations and they do have a high emphasis on the mid range.
Lumpy Gravy would do it for me...
Todays listening makes you lazy...
We are so spoiled with music everywhere, but, sometimes I miss old days with vinylplaying...
And, I've have missing my old turntable since we moved to the Stockholm-area a few years ago...
But, yesterday I get into a shop in Stockholm an bought myself an turntable for vinyl again!
I've miss to play many of my 1000 LP's and singles...
And, I'am so delighted with the sound from the new vinylplayer...
This is what I bought, for 2300 SEK (approx 250$ or 190£):
That's a lot of vinyl! What kind of music do you have in your collection?
Well, i'm over 50 years old, so it's music from several decades ;-)
A lot of swedish from the 70's, much synth-records from the 80's, a lot of british; The Smiths, The Cure etc. There's alot...
Elton John, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, The Saints, Early U2, Latin Quarter...
Yeah, if a should mention all I like it will be a long reply :-)
Music is the most joyful in life!
My turntables always since childhood have been imposed from family luck, and second hand choices, and abandond'd long ago.
Went to the trashyard, found a cool piece, but without the needle, exchanged it with the one from my only leftover record player plastix item of my collection, and broke it again ... Just look at errka's one!
