Anyone using CD Baby or something like it?
I have maybe 50 or so people who have told me they would like me to release an iTunes album of my stuff. CD Baby claims that, for $89, they'll get the album to iTunes and a bunch of the other digital places. It seems if half my friends bought the record, I'd at least break even. I'd be mixing and mastering it myself, so there's really no additional cost. Am I missing something or is it that simple?

Yes and also there's Connect on Apple Music.

I use Distrokid. It's only $20 a year, unlimited uploads. You can upload 20 albums or more a year and the price doesn't change. With CD Baby and Tunecore, they charge extra per album.
Apple Music Connect is for those who already have their music on iTunes, so you'll still need an aggregator like the ones mentioned above.
I've used CD Baby for years, I think they're a good outfit.
Yes, you pay the fee and they do their thing and it's usually up on iTunes pretty quickly.
Yes it is that simple. You mix and master ensuring all copyright details are in hand and you pay and submit. You can choose your preferred digital music carrier(s). It goes into iTunes, Amazon.....you get the drift? Depending on your preferred choices, the streaming bug will bite your earnings
3p per play? You can then work out how many plays before you get a dollar. Anyway, you wait for the quarterly payments and Bob's your uncle!
So I've had 4,626 plays of my stuff on Soundcloud, in total.
x3p = £138.78 if it had been on Spotify...
That could buy me a few apps I guess

Thanks for the responses, thoughts, and laughs. I'm not looking to make a living here; although, that would be nice. It would be cool for the small group of people who are interested to have a nice little digital package with no real cost to me. If I'm making the music anyway, it really seems like a no brainer.
Any naysayers?
We used cd baby to put our album on iTunes, spotify, etc. It was painless.
I think the streaming rate is more like. .3 cents per stream- in listening to an Interview with Desmond child yesterday on the decibel geek podcast,he mentioned that he received a statement for I think 5 million streams of living on a prayer which led to a check for $110, to be split between the 3 writers...that's the US though, I hear that other parts of the world may be different.
Apparently there's a law change coming in the US that will make it slightly better- we'll see.
Another option to look at is bandcamp, which I think may be free. I believe we have our album there as well. Same goal for me- famous left a long time ago, I just wanted to have our stuff in a package that someone could download or stream if they were interested, along with knowing that I finished a project.
The Spotify royalties are now much better than they were. Bandcamp is also a great place, but because it's free it's becoming very populated, so it gets harder to get noticed.
+1
Do you think that SoundCloud Pro could become an aggregator for Apple Music Connect?
If I were looking for your music on bandcamp, what would I search for?
All these platforms are great for listeners but not so good for independent artists. Even with a thousands of clicks and followers i deleted all my accounts (and created new fresh accounts) there because it's full of spam, things like give me a like and i give you a like and so on. The old soundcloud f.e. was thousand times better (at least for artists). The only way you can spread your music is when you have lots of reposts etc. Then these platforms are so big now that you need a name before you enter to get people to listen your stuff. In general there are lots of possibilities but it's also hard to even gift your music to people. Everyone can release an album today easy but it's maybe easier to start on a compilation(s) with a few tracks (if you are totally unknown) before releasing an album as no name artist. Then some things are just not commercial enough. So it's def. a lot easier to create music today but also hard to swim in the big pool of unknown artists.
How's your experience with distrokid with distribution and sales? I nearly signed up but wanted to check the others. There's a few sites that compare them anyway, distrokid does seem like the best one but what's the deal with them not collecting royalties from all the sites the distribute on, it's in the comments here: http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/permalink/2014/05/29/digital-distribution-company-review

I hope you enjoy it!
So far I've only been with them for 24 days, too early to tell. But the distribution was very quick, though. iTunes had my album in less than 2 days and the rest of the stores within a week. They're the best in this regard.
To my knowledge, they do collect royalties from all the sites they distribute. They have to. You can check out their FAQ, they talk a little about that. They don't collect royalties from YouTube unless you upgrade your subscription and they do it thru an outside company, I believe.
Excellent stuff, just signed up. I saw all the options on the page which i'll check out later. Btw if anyones considering it i got a nice offer because i didn't complete the process straight away. Just a heads up.
Interesting! I'm curious to know what kind of nice offer you've got. Do tell...
My band has used Tunecore and Mondo Tunes. Tunecore is just crazy expensive now compared to some others. Mondo Tunes worked well for us because of the all you can eat model. Distokid does the same but their customer service blows and they have a number of add on fees. So the 20 ends up being alot more and that was enough for us to stop the process. Mondotunes costs a little more but they have more stores and don't have the additional store fees. We're happy with them for nowand now just need to get more fans to hear our music
Anyone used Routenote? It is apparently free but what is the catch, if any?
