Randomise Korg Gadget Synths - Free TB-Midi Stuff Page

If you ever wanted to hit a random button have create a completely random patch in any of the Korg Gadget synths - now you can. If you own TB MIDI stuff.

Big thanks must go to @solador78 for sharing his fantastic list of all Gadget synth midi ccs. Attached here again for the reference - I hope you don't mind @solador78?

With this I was able to set up the page in TB MIDI Stuff that simply sends a random value to ALL of these midi ccs. Obviously some Gadget synths will ignore some of them - but that doesn't matter.

Instructions:

  • Unzip the attached zip file

  • Mail yourself the .tbms file

  • "Open In" TB Midi stuff

  • Open the page

  • Make sure TB Midi Stuff is broadcasting midi to Gadget

  • Hit the random button

Now a good amount of times it's going to produce patches which have the filter down too low to hear anything, or the attack right up so or whatever. You you need to use your common sense and tweak the patch a bit to get it usable.

The sliders you see on the page have been laid out in rows down the page in the order of @solador78 cc list. But 6 sliders at the top of the page (in a different style) I pulled out and stuck up there for easy tweaking purposes (especially when you have the built in TB Midi Keyboard up which covers the bottom half of the screen). They are, from left to right: Amp Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release and then Filter Cutoff with Filter Res below.

Finally, the other 3 black sliders you see down the page are: Output level, Damper, and Pitch Bend range. These are essentially disabled. I haven't hooked these up to send Midi so they do nothing (since I figure you won't want to mess with these things. You'll notice they don't move when you hit random).

I find that sometimes I can tweak a bit using the sliders in the page, especially when I pull up the TB Midi Stuff keyboard. But then i'll need to go into Gadget to perfect the patch. But anyway - it makes for a very creative and 'random' starting point. Some of the Gadgets will surprise you I think.

It won't work with any of the drum/sampler gadgets apart from Tokyo.

Have fun. And if you want to say thanks then just follow me on

Let me know how it's working for you....

  • Cool thanks. Use AudioShare to unzip and open in TB MIDI Stuff. Done.

  • The page is for use on an iPad by the way

  • Opened fine but not had chance to play. Will test later.

  • I am Midi-adverse with high-stupidity symptoms but am going to try this because it's a) just damn cool and b) it's, you know, really cool. Love this idea and will go find TB Midi Stuff simply for the use of etc.

Thanks so much for doing this gentlemen.

  • Works using GoodReader too. Thanks Matt!

  • Did the downloading/opening bit and it says it 'sees' Gadget, not quite certain what the next step is (forgive me etc). Run a pattern in Gadget? Hit randomize and hope?

  • I don't mind at all. This looks really cool, so I'll definitely check it out this weekend. Thanks Matt!

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Thanks so much for sharing this! I actually started working on something similar (inspired by this same idea that I think you commented in another thread) but later abandoned it in favor of Lemur (still learning the scripting language).

  • Hi @johnnygoodyear

I'd pull up the TB Midi Keyboard and make sure when you play it, it's sending notes to the Gadget you have open. If not adjust the global midi settings in TB Midi Stuff until it does.

Then it the random button. The Gadget patch will then radically, randomly change. Adjust ADSR and filter (see above).

    Then rinse and repeat.

    That work for you?

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Yesir. Of course. Thank you so much for the serving of custard etc. Very cool. Already stimulated and I haven't got further than the Darwin Kalimba...

What are the BPM of this?

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Bugger. How am I suppose to get any work done now you've invented this? Wonderful just going through Salzburg. I'm going to have truckloads of presets saved by bedtime. Shame I can't seem to save things in Darwin. Perhaps just as well.

This is a seriously cool tool/widget and I curse you with a happy hand for magicking it up.

It has no BPM. It just creates a random patch in Gadget.

Wicked. The best (most interesting) results won't be the Module ones or Darwin. It will be the proper synths where you can get into the guts and really change the DNA of the sound. Kingston was a revelation. Wolfsburg too.

  • OK kids, this is the best no money I've spent in a good long time. Great stuff.

  • Cool. Glad you're getting some fun out of it.

  • Nice, thanks. I wish there were a random button standard on the side of the iPad. I'd use it in all apps.

I hit the Panic button between randomizations and seem to get useable results more often, btw.

Good idea and a nice tip, thanks.

    Hi Matt,

Very keen to try this but I can't get TB Midi Stuff to talk to Gadget (IOS 8.4 iPad Air 1). Any advice on global midi settings in TB Midi to make it generate any sound out of Gadget? (I tried various Gadgets as suggested by you with nothing except silence, just using the TB Midi keyboard.)

Sorry for the hassle. This seems to be a great freebie you have provided to the community.

  • @richiehoop you need to make sure TBI Midi Stuff is sending midi out to Gadget, Gadget background audio is on, and a Gadget is selected. You might want to use the built in keyboard from within TB Midi Stuff to make sure you've got a connection with Gadget. After you hit the random button and if you don't get any sound in Gadget, return to Gadget and adjust the filter or envelopes until you get a sound you like.

Ah, got it now! The Background Audio part was the bit I was missing, and unintuitively, that turns out to be adjusted in the iPad App settings and not within Gadget itself. Forgive my ignorance. Thanks a million, @Paul. This forum comes up trumps yet again.

  • Thanks Matt and Solador78 :)

I thought this was a good thing to have for all sorts of apps not just Gadget and I didn't have TB midi stuff. So I thought I'd make one in Lemur to start learning it...

Here it is, my Lemur CC Randomizer...Nothing else fancy yet just cc randomization, I may add some more features ... Goes up to CC 120 currently. 2 pages of sliders but the button randomises all sliders at the same time. Just press the red button....make sure that midi target 0 is pointed to Gadget or similar.

There's probably much better Lemur templates than this which do similar things, but I find most of them to be quite complicated, so simplicity is good. :)

  • @Carnbot, @Matt_Fletcher_2000

I've just had a chance to play with your Lemur and TB Randomizers and I'm really impressed with both of them. It makes me want to tweak the templates and also spend hours and hours making presets. People sharing stuff like this is the coolest part of ios music and the forum. Thanks a lot!

  • Cool. Tweak away...

  • Nice! Thanks guys!

  • Thank you @Carnbot , she's a beaut!

  • Hope it's of some use :)

It got me started making Lemur templates.
Eventually I might make a more Gadget specialised one with a page for each Gadget which could have more specific options for each.....

  • @Carnbot - please don't do that... It will mean i'll have to buy Lemur :).

  • Not sure if this will be of use to anyone else, but here's a Marseille randomizer for TB-Midi. I used @Matt_Fletcher_2000 template as the foundation.
