Cubasis, Auria UCA222 Issue, after Apple 8.4 install Pop Up..Warning!!!!

I don't remember exactly before update but last night as I was testing my headphones with the Behringer UCA222 I freaked out when no sound came out of my UCA222 when I hit play in Cubasis.
Then I connected my headphones to the headphone out of iPad and sound worked.

Never had this happen before. So I launched Audiobus and launched Cubasis in it and the UCA worked perfectly there. Anyone try this or any info if we have to use Audiobis now if you want to use Cubasis with an external sound card?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe @funjunkie got some insight here?
Edit: On a related sidenote, the rca out of the behringer in question soon stopped to fnctn, that's why I settled on spdif - and found it to be quite indispensable in my setup via behringer headphone out to mixer + optical from ad/da converter to extrasoundcard > computer setup (think about audiomux/musicIO) mind: mixer out to converter spdif in:) huh?

  • Weird thing is that everything works perfectly if Cubasis, Auria are hosted in Audioshare or Audiobus.
But alone, they will not output any signal thru my UCA.
I wonder what happened. I haven't done anything To my iPad. I did notice that Apple had auto downloaded the 8.4 update but asked me to install it. I cancelled and deleted it. So I wonder If apple did something behind the scenes.

  • Forgot to mention that Audiobus keeps crashing or freezing up. It says Opps something found error with audio and asks me to reboot.
Between yesterday and today something weird has happened.

  • Sorry, yes. Same here, I guess. thanks for pointing out, @Musikman4Christ. Still trying to reproduce.> @Musikman4Christ said:

  • Auria seems to be ok.

  • I'm going to do a restore from iTunes man. I think Apple definitely installed something without us knowing. Everything worked perfectly last night.
Right after I got that pop up from apple saying that the update was ready to install, things went haywire.

Do you also have a UCA? So I guess mine is fine then. I thought might be going bad or something but that couldn't be cause it works fine if Cubase or Auria are hosted. Otherwise they do not produce any output!

  • Yes, uca222, partly broken:) I am not versed in 'bug' handling, somebody surely will come up with proper knowledge, good luck, don't panic :)

  • I'm running iOS8.4 on my iPad Air 2 with Behringer UCA-202 and have no problems what so ever with Cubasis alone or in AudioBus. Latest versions of everything...

  • Funnily, I think I've experienced a similar problem using totally different apps. I had no sound coming out of MTS, and I had to either touch the volume button or disconnect and reconnect the jack (and the iPad wasn't on mute). I've only experienced this once, but I think it is an 8.4 generic issue...

Please, specify your setup, MM4C, do a hard reset, mini1 confirmed vis:cubasis, not the soundcard.

  • I had an issue with uca 222 and audiobus on 8.3 and I thought it was because I was using it through a powered hub but in the end a.hard rset solved the problem. Just a thought, but agree with the advice above.

  • What's a hard reset?
    Sorry guys.
I was just going to reinstall everything.

  • Power off. Pressing power + home button - soft reset. Wait with the reinstall, it will be ok.

  • I had a weird moment with Auria, after installing iOS 8.4, where no sound came out, at all. Hard reset, and it worked. I'm hoping this all works fine, as I just ordered a UCA222 to work as headphone monitor.

  • Thanks!
Yeah, that's exactly what I was doing. There's no problem at all I I use the headphone out but once I hook up my UCA with the CCK connector it forces me to use audiobus.

  • Note that you need to keep holding the power+home button until you see the Apple logo, then release them. I'm not near home, so I can't test it.

  • It could be then that Apple must have installed something during the download of the 8.4 file.
I am still on 8.2, but when I went to system Geneal settings under usage, I saw that the 8.4 file was there so I promptly deleted it.

I know i have not installed anything since last night and everything was working like a charm until today. So either in freaking out or Apple is installing stuff behind our backs to force us to upgrade .

  • Reinstalled Cubasis. No good. Still, in Setup-Audio settings, I can tell that it doesnt recognize the UCA222 anymore, cause if I unplug it, the Input GAIN bar works. As soon as I plug my UCA, I get "No Device Connected" message.

But, if I run Audiobus, I dont have this problem. What could it be? Was it like this before guys?

  • Samu, you know, I don't even remember now if I always used the headphone out when playing around with Cubasis. But just recently since I got my new headphones and tried to use them with the UCA222 is when I noticed that I had to use Audiobus with Cubasis. It works perfectly. It's just that I don't remember if I always had to.

So in your case, if you say, launch Cubasis with your connected UCA, you are able to hear the headphone out of the UCA even if you didn't use audiobus?

That's right, the 'gain' in Cubasis is disabled because the UCAs have no hardware gain control. And yes Cubasis says it doesn't have any device connected but it still works. (for me it's allways been like this).

If it doesn't work for you just mention it to Lars from Steinberg, he checks this forum from time to time :)

    Important point and correct:
The "Hardware Gain Control" display does not inform about the status, if an audio device is connected or not at all! You will find the name of your device listed here only, if the device supports "Hardware Gain Control"!

Input and output settings have to be set in the routing tab of Cubasis' inspector (located to the left of the tracklist).

    Regarding the UCA:
Reading through the comments the issue seems to be persistant with several DAW apps (issue is not limited to Cubasis), correct?
The device seems to work flawlessly for some but not for others. Is there a clear pattern what could cause/solve the problem?

    Best,
    Lars

  • Thanks Lars. I was able to get Garageband work without having it to go through Audiobus. I don't think it even supports it. Anyway, it worked with my setup. Apple CCK connected to the UCA and using the headphones outs of the UCA. Garageband played back perfectly.

Auria did work also. But it is not consistant. Anyway, for now, I am okay with inserting Cubasis in AudioBus in order to use my UCA. As long as it works and it does, then I am happy. It's just that now, I don't remember whether it worked before where I could hook up my UCA222 directly to Cubasis and listen to my recorded stuff with out having to use Audiobus.

I almost did a complete reinstall, but instead installed the previous version of Audiobus just to see if that helped. It seems to be more stable somehow.

Thanks for your immediate reply. I'm glad to hear you've found a workaround that seems to work for you.
I will check with our engineers if there's a chance to evaluate the issue on our side. I will also get in touch with Michael and Sebastian from Audiobus if they have ideas, suggestions.

    Thanks
    Lars

  • Thanks Lars!
The UCA is not expensive at all but it allows me to use with out having external power. Thanks for looking into it.

@Musikman4Christ Sometimes I would actually prefer if there was an option to manually route the audio.

Meaning if I have my UCA-202 far away from the iPad (3' extension cable) I'd actually prefer to have an option to record thru the UCA-202 but monitor thru the iPad's internal speaker or headphone jack.

I think this is possible to do using CoreAudio, ie. select different devices for Input and Output.

This would be the optimal solution for Cubasis.

  • @Musikman4Chris, I just picked up my uca222. I don't have Cubasis, but I do have Auria, and the uca222 works wonderfully well for monitoring the mix. I was getting really boomy mixes, and the suspicion, I believe from @richardyot, is that there is a high pass filter, or something that is causing that, on the iPad headphone jack. It sure is a lot less boomy when monitoring through the UCA222.

  • Worth noting is that if you attach HeadPhones that require a lot of juice they will sound boomy on the iPad because it can't deliver enough. The UCA's have a built-in headphone amp that is pretty good, it's a 'night & day' difference compared to the iPad headphone-jack when using higher end head-phones.

  • tx, @Samu. That could be the problem also. Using Focal Spirit Pros. It certainly does sound better.

  • thanks man!

Did you have to use Audiobus?
Auria has been been unstable foe me lately. Sometimes it works without having to use Audiobus.
    What IOS are you on?

  • @Musikman4Christ, no, didn't have to use Audiobus at all. I'm on iOS 8.4.
