Linndrum?
I was reading on the other thread that the drum app market is saturated. Is there something that emulates, or goes very close, to the Linndrum samples? If you don't know, it's the drum machine used for the best hits of the '80s.
Thanks in advance.

The owner of the Linn samples protects the IP. You either have to license from him or have trouble sleeping at night, I believe. However, there are plenty of Linn samples that can be tracked down and used in any drum machine that lets you load samples.
Diode-108 has a few 80s sample drums if you can't be bothered to make your own kit from the real Linn samples. DrumTrax is probably the closest.
I wouldn't personally recommend anything that uses the Linn samples without approval. But there might be some in the iTunes store. I don't know which use the samples legally.
DMI and Funkbox have Linndrum samples , probably other sample based drum machines have them as well but those two for sure. As for emulations I have no idea.
Never knew that about the IP for Linndrum samples. Is Roger Linn the owner of those samples?
FunkBox has a LinnDrum kit but after @Diode108's post, not sure how legit those are. The Linndrum clap is super easy to recognize.
Maybe we can convince this guy to make an iOS port of vLinn that uses the original LM-1 EPROMS
"Use of the stock LM1 EPROMS has been possible with the kind permission of Roger Linn, the creator of the Linn and early MPC machines along with many other great products."

Beatmaker@ has Linn samples as well, but they're best layered w/other samples.
Interesting
I believe that Bruce Forat is the license holder to Linn samples (Forat Music and Electronics). I don't think Roger Linn owns them. I've thought about asking him (he's a friend of a friend).
While we're at it let's convince Roger to come out with the linn drum v2 already!!
I'm thinking the IP is mostly regarding the use of the LINN name and use of original EPROMS(Ie. not re-sampled).
There is at least one app that pretends to be LM-1 for the iOS. The sounds may be 're-sampled' as there is no mention of licensed EPROMS...

Sign me up! Timothy Swartz who was one of the original engineers at EMU/ENSONIQ has the rights to the original ROMS. The SoundFonts and Kontakt patches are amazing. I'd imagine the Linn sounds would be great too.
I'm sure they're lovely, but whenever I hear talk of the past colossus I can't help but wonder who's the new colossus at work and unrecognized right now...
I wrote some code to decode the Ensoniq ROMs once. They used CRAZY (awesome) encoding.
That's possible. This is one reason we let you easily add your own samples to Diode. I'd hate to offer a kit as a built-in, then retract it, ruining songs.
Resampling is a gray area I'd rather not enter. The laws are too tough to fathom for me.
I know of a case of a whole bunch of apps going down because they were all using an emulation core they didn't have the rights to. Messy.
We spent money (out of our pockets) getting top-notch samples. We decided early on that we were going to do the right thing, legally and ethically, each step of the way.
A big culprit is eBay. Tim does his own phone support and he was telling me that assholes were selling his ROM sounds on eBay. They bought them from him, repackaged and started selling them for a huge discount. All he can do is contact eBay and ask them to stop.
I know very little about programming. Why were you trying to decode the Ensoniq ROMs? What made it so hard? This is the interesting stuff! :-)
That's rather dreadful. I'd rather sleep at night than make a buck like that.
I respect and appreciate this. Whenever I hear that someone has to get some kind of permission before they can use results from an app due to ownership restrictions, that app will never be used by me (ie the Gorillaz iElectribe). I actually consider it highly irresponsible of a developer trying to put out an app (either for sale or for free) and then requiring a user to run their work by the developer before the work can be used.
That Gorillaz thing is just weird!
Anomaly.
There's worse things than getting noticed/sued by Blur.
Damon Albarn grew up a few streets from where I grew up, but I never knew him.. Strange but true ..
I bought the Gorillaz electribe, it's ok, quite limited but ok. You can always export loops then put them thru Turnado and then who's gonna know !.
don't click on the above link unless you know the site.... and no, I did not.
I checked on Facebook and they put out some mcdonalds survey. I'm putting a curse on them right now.
It's the same link-spamming @hole in the Samplr thread.
gonna have to brew up another curse then in that case, but this time I'll be sure to use oatmeal in the recipe instead of cream of rice, that'll teach'em!!
Ugh, there's the same type of spam in the StepPolyArp, INIT and Speakers thread too. Basically any old thread that's been resurrected....
ffs I don't keep enough fiber in the house for all of the curses I'll need for these buggers
