MidiLFOs MIDI Modulation Toy

midiLFOs - midi modulation toy by Arthur Kerns

May get some use out of this as I loved his other app Funkbox.

  • Very interesting... I created something similar with TC-Data but it didn't sync to midi clock and was a bit fiddly to set up.

This looks nice - and i could point it various Gadget gadgets for some interesting effects. It's also interesting that the description says the LFO can be triggered by incoming Midi data (perhaps listening for a new 'note on' from an external keyboard?).

    Anyone tried it?

I think I might have to dive in...

  • Cool concept.

  • Looks very nice. I just wish this were built into MIDI Designer Pro.

  • Bingo... works nicely with Gadget... (see attached results)

I got the sine wave LFO1 to internally modify the amplification of the triangle wave LFO2 which was set to send values of between 31 and 119 on CC#1 to Gadget (which is Helsinki's filter cutoff).

So this produced a nice pulsing rhythm with the filter across an 8 bar chord... Not something I could do in Helsinki otherwise.

The possibilities across all of the gadgets (and of course other synths that don't have LFOs but do have midi cc in) are pretty limitless.

So this app is recommended if you like this sort of thing.

I haven't tried the midi clock sync yet because both the MidiLFO app and Gadget will only act as clock slaves - not masters. Therefore i'd need to get Loopy (or similar) sending a clock to both...

  • Bump... because this new app should be getting more love! :)

  • That pretty cool Matt, it works great with NAVE as well been tinkering with it most of the evening.

  • Finally! I'm in. Thanks for finding this @Jumpercollins.

  • If you have a chance, can you test it with Metronom and/or midisequencer as the master please? Thanks!

  • Just realizing that this was made by one of the brothers who form Synthetic Bits (Funkbox and Little Midi Machine). Also just no realizing Jumper said as much in the first post.

Wonder why it's not a Synthetic Bits venture, just for the name recognition. Also wonder what the breakdown of duties is/was between the brothers.

  • @syrupcore (and anyone who's interested) this is from Discchord:

"Art Kerns, one half of the brothers at Synthetic Bits behind Funkbox and Little MIDI Machine, has launched his solo career for what he calls, "esoteric MIDI nerd apps." The first in a series of 4 planned apps is designed to send MIDI messages that are shaped by an LFO. This is similar to Brute LFO, but with MIDI instead of CV"

Yep @solador78 - Got it slaving to the clock of midisequencer. You have to select MidiLFOs port in Midisequencer (rather than the other way round) for it to work.

You can change the clock tempo up and down and it changes the tempo quite fluidly in MidiLFOs on the fly.

Tried with Metronom but couldn't get it to work. I'd never actually launched Metronom before so I don't really know how it works. So you might be able to get it working but I couldn't.

It also syncs as a slave to Loopy.

  • Awesome. Really excited about this app. Thanks!

  • It's very nice.

You can also control all 4 of the lfos (both rate and amplitude) with midi in. So you could control the Lfos with an external controller or even with MidiSequencer for some really crazy stuff. You can also set the Lfos to only trigger on an incoming note or Cc

  • So u r basically saying that this app can wobble ANY gadget synth, even Miami?

  • Hmmm, I like these apps that can get gadget to do intense things..

  • Just noticed I'm on ios 8.1 , this app needs 8.2

I take it gadget works fine on 8.2 then?

  • @touchconspiracy - it can wobble any midi cc parameter of any iOS or hardware synth (including all Gadgets).

You could wobble Miami's wobble knob for example. Or just bypass Miami's rather boring bpm synced lfo and wobble the cutoff directly with a lot more interesting wave shapes.

The slightly annoying thing is that because gadget doesn't send any midi out you can't get the lfo to trigger on a key down in gadget (it will just wobble continuously). But you could play Miami from another app or a hardware keyboard and that way you could then trigger the lfo to start on note-ons.

No!!! Damn-it! My dinosaur ipad cant handle 8. Gonna have to make due with Wolfsburg to make risers until 9 comes out.

  • This is such a simple idea, it is a wonder that no one has done it before! The ability to modulate one lfo with another is great too.

  • Sorry, I meant Brussels lol, they look kind of similar in design

Can it do stuff to Brussels? I'm gonna hit purchase but please send settings screenshots, I'm a midiot, all these midi cc things are beyond me

Also wondering what happens if arpeggist also controlled same gadget at same time , or if arpeggist ran through this new app which in turn controlled a gadget lol

Just bought it for Turnado. Pretty useful for Turnado, I need this extra hands with!

I will like it with Cyclop too. Haha, good tool on Auria Saturn, will try it soon!

  • Alright, this midiot cannot get this app to do nothing lol

Someone give me some basic settings to try with any gadget please lol

  • You could modulate any of the knobs in Brussels. Eg the filter. Or the pump. Or whatever.

  • Pretty much all the text on the MidiLFOs interface is actually a button. If you touch where it says 'MidiLFOs' that brings up global settings.

Each LFO also has its own settings which determine where to send the midi (choose 'Gadget') and what number midi CC to send. To determine this, go to Gadget and use the function button and then on the right hand side scroll down to see the midiCc number of the parameter you want to control. Then go back to MidiLFO and set it to that number.

    Then you're away.

So are you gonna upgrade your iPad at some point? I got a 64GB Mini 2 for £250 from eBay. Probably even cheaper now. Same spec as the Air1.

Runs everything wonderfully. IOS8.3. I've had 24 tracks in Gadget. I think you'd love it.

  • Matt help me out mate..please send screenshots of settings to get this app triggering gadget..

  • I got my iPad mini 2 from Apple online store for £200, free shipping AND a years guarantee

On my phone only all day. But could this evening maybe. Keep pressing stuff. You'll get it!

  • Lol, keep pressing stuff he says!

I can wait no prob, but if I have a eureka moment I'll let u know

  • Right. Look at this grab.

    http://cdn3.iosnoops.com/wp-content/uploads/appsicons/998273841xscreenipad1.jpg

Where it says 'midi Lfos out' in the top left. Press that.

It should give you an option to send midi ccs to gadget there. Do you see that?
