Latency while playing iOS amp sims

Hi,

I'm very close to ordering a nice Strat, that I plan to play solely with my iPad. I am however getting concerned about latency.

As a keyboard player (which is my main instrument) I've always had issues with anything but very low latency, so 16/44 and 128 buffer size on iPad is very noticeable to me. I'm not sure if this will be so much of an issue with a guitar or not. Plugged in my acoustic and ran it through a few amps sims, most of which went down to 44/128. The perceived latency did not seem so bad, but that might just be my inexperience as a guitarist :-)

So here is where I need your help!

In your experience, how low does latency have to be, not to be noticeable, when playing guitar?

Are there any amp sims, that you know/feel induce more or less overhead for it's processing?

Do you know of any amp sims that will allow for lower buffer settings or higher kilo hertz settings?

Finally does anyone know how the latency is with the "VST Versions" of Jamup or OverLoud for Auria, when making a 96 project? I tried making a 96hkz project in Auria and using different sims via IAA. The only sim that did not freak out for 96khz was Jamup, but I was not impressed with the percieved latency..

Let me know your thoughts,
Sune

I noticed that low latency issue in bias too the other day, I haven't used it in a while. And the trick Flo mentioned did in fact fix the issue.

  • Or if you're a sloppy player like myself - 512 frames isn't a issue

Tonestack has very low latency setting! I have no problem with this app.works great!

Here is a little tip with bias: when you open the app ,latency setting is already on very low.press on normal, then go back to very low .now you are really on very low latency.don't know if it's a bug,but it works.

Bias fx works perfectly.no problem with latency.hope it helps.

128 frames makes guitar apps perfectly playable for me.256 can be problematic for groovy stuff..526 makes guitar apps unplayable for me.

I think, what @monzo, @supadom and many others (and me) have been experiencing recently regarding this disturbing bug that can mess up the entire app-setup, in my opinion stems from latency conflicts, as I could even flip this 'overcharged digitally screeching noise' an octave by changing the frames in audioshare's hardware settings while it occured ...

I just moved from tonestack on iPhone into Audiobus on iPad to tonestack on the iPad as part of my ab preset. Even though since the last few loopy updates the latency of my looping rig has improved dramatically now having the tonestack on the same device as everything else made it almost unnoticeable. I've also tried amplitube and latency was spot on.
