Gadget Export Hiss
Hello all. When I export my Gadget projects to Ableton I get hiss on the audio loops. I know it's not the DAW because my AU/VSTs are clean. I tried getting rid of the hiss with a filter but all I did was knock off the high end of the sound (I don't know what I'm doing). I could just replace it in Ableton but I like the sound and it defeats the purpose of using Gadget. I love Gadget! :-)
I'm new to effects and was wondering if you have any VST/AU effects tricks that would let me get rid of the hiss but keep the feldility of the sound. Maybe a limiter or compressor? Thanks.

Sometimes I get fx tail from the delays at the end of a track, and they end with crackle and hiss...very annoying
That's happens to me too but in the case the sound is dry from Gadget. It's a piano cord from Bilbao: RawCutz 02/HT_RC012. You can hear the hiss in Gadget too!
I find the reverbs - and especially the limiter add a bit of hiss - or more like a buzz. I never use the limiter in Gadget myself - and reverb sparingly
I didn't use the reverb or limiter in Gadget at all. Check out the sample in Bilbao if you have the time. You select a pad, hit the orange sample button, and select RawCutz 02/HT_RC012.
I'm not sure what plugins you have access to, but a noise removal processor might help if you need to keep the character of the full length of that sample whilst reducing the hiss.
A lot depends on the context within which you are using the sample. You might also try cutting off its noisy tail (use Length and Decay in Bilbao), then reintroduce the effect tail yourself with a suitable filtered reverb or delay, which you could even accomplish within Gadget.
Or just use the BPF (band pass filter) with its Cutoff and Resonance controls both set to around 50 in Bilbao and see if it's a reasonable enough compromise for how you'd like that sample to sound.
Because the sample itself is so noisy to begin with, any efforts to clean it up are likely to be a slight compromise, but it's what it sounds like within the context of your final mix that will count. Good luck
@mkell424 The original 'dry' sample 'HT_RC012.wav' 'has quite a lot of hiss/noise. (Yes, I've extracted all the Bilbao(88,5MB) and AbuDhabi(23,4MB) samples so I can use them elsewhere too).
I think the noise is there 'by design' to give the sounds a rougher/grungier style as samples RC013 and RC014 also exhibit similar but more subdued noise-character. These are not the only samples in Bilbao with 'baked in noise' and I don't see it as a 'flaw'. If a cleaner 'piano chord' is needed there are other Gadgets that do the work more 'cleanly'

Thanks! I don't have a noise removal plugin but the other two I can try. I'm going to cut the MIDI of the piano chord section out of the drum loop and paste it into a new track using Bilbao then try your methods.
Gadget is an awesome app. It's good to know there are work arounds. :-)
@Samu Thanks for checking the sample! I can see what you mean by some types of songs using the noise. Kinda of like when you add a vinyl record sound to a lounge track.
I think I fixed the problem. Filter to cut off the hiss -> EQ to bring up some of the high end -> Loudness plugin to makeup for the lost volume -> Chorus wet turned down low
Excellent! Well done It's a bit like sonic sculpting: there are many ways of achieving a suitable end result and there aren't really any right or wrong answers. Since you're happy with how it sounds now, it definitely seems like you've come up with a solution that works well for your track. Good work!
the name Raw Cutz... implies that they've been vinyl sampled so that hiss adds to the character of the sound.
Haven't had any problems with glitches on effect tails. I have an iPad Air 2 though.
Try quitting other apps when working in gadget. I found out that it helps with that stupid latency so it might help with export too.
Thanks @Vecoto. You started the wheels turning in my head. :-) This is the first time I ever tried to solve a problem with an effects chain. I used free plugins like the Sunruys CM compressor from Computer Music magazine and Blue Cat chorus. It was a lot of fun!
What I have to do is educate myself. Future had a sale on the Apple Newstand for Computer Music magazine. I picked up the back issues for cheap and started a subscription. I also bought a couple Future Music but they are focused mostly on hardware. FM does have some good downloads. Thanks again for your help!
I didn't know that RAW Cutz meant vinyl. I guess the RAW would be the hiss. I really like the RAW Cutz piano sound it's just that the rest of the track is very clean so every time the piano note plays you can really hear the hiss. It's a long tail so it's really annoying.
Noise can add character, just like film-grain once did and even nowadays when using super high ISO(>ISO25600) in dark environments, it looks sweet when converted to B&W but has too much colour noise to be accurate
Yeah Photography is one of my other 'hobbies'...
@Samu In your productions what kind of music do you like noise in the track? The first genre that comes to mind is Trip Hop. Nightmare's on Wax's album Smoker's Delight has a lot of noise on it.
Listen to Pipes Honour by Nightmares On Wax on @AppleMusic.

I can think of many genres where 'designed' noise is usefull, ambient, industrial, techno and artsy stuff...
Subtle noise can be mixed into almost anything to make it come 'alive' and sound less clinial and artificial. Sterile synth pads can benefit from added phased noise as one example.
The FM4 synth is practical example of 'designed' noise. It cound be clinically clean but would not sound as good compare to DXi, same method of synthesis but clinically as clean as can be.
In the end it's a matter of personal taste.
MasterRecord will add many different types of noise (vinyl, tape, console etc..) to your choosing...
Thanks for suggesting because I've been looking for a vintage warmer. I'll run Ableton's audio through using Audiobus and iConnect. At $5.99 it's a steal compared to AU/VST tape plugins.
I'm getting this and I don't think it is the sound I am using. I'll know more in a bit when the exported tracks have downloaded into Audioshare from Dropbox.
I have an 8 bar loop which was a simple London loop, Darwin bass and Glasgow lead. After splitting the London loop onto separate tracks for kick, snare, clap and hats I exported the kick, via Audiocopy into Cubasis. There is a definite noisy ringing in the tail of the kicks. I was using the limiter and reverb on the master bus - but tried exports with these on and off (btw - if Gadget exports a single track does it still pick up the master bus? It doesn't sound like it does as both tracks sound the same)
Also, the ringing was much more noticeable in Cubasis than Audioshare (clean project, no fx). Running latest versions of everything on Mini 2, iOS 8.4.
Anyway the files have downloaded now so I'll see if it is the same on the other tracks.
@xen interesting. In my case up above it happened exporting to Live. Maybe it's something to do with the way the App converts the mix down to an audio file. Besides the RAW Cutz sample I stated above, I've transfered other Gadget clips by recording the audio live into Ableton with no problem.
@mkell424
I've worked out it's not Gadget - it's my iTrack Dock - depending on the app, CPU noise is bleeding onto the output. It's hardly noticeable with Gadget, not too bad with Audioshare and a right PITA with Cubasis.
The Gadget files themselves sound nice and clean once I've taken them though Cubasis and imported them into Cubase using Steinberg's project importer.
I've had the noise problem before but managed to damp it down below the irritation threshold with gain staging and I'd sort of forgotten it. This is the first time I've run Cubase 1.9.5 and iOS 8.4 through the iTrack and into my hardware, so something has changed.
Support ticket on its way to Focusrite. If they don't have an answer it might be time to open her up and see if I some DIY shielding makes any difference.
