puc plus (puc+) Campaign - Wireless MIDI and USB/Midi

I just happened to stumble on this today. This new version is Bluetooth 4.0 (instead of wi-fi like the original puc) and it now allows for use with USB midi devices. Here's your chance to get it at a discount.

@Ringleader - much appreciated. Just joined the Contributors. This should work with my FCB1010 to get rid of the cable and iPad dock and also for my Alesis Q25. I had gotten the mi.1 for this purpose originally, only to find out it didn't work on either of these devices (no power from the Q25 - midi out only and not sure why it doesn't work on the FCB1010).

  • I thought it would be handy to combine this with audio interfaces that charge the iOS device over lightning, but don't have any USB host ports (I.e. Apogee ONE, Line 6 Sonic Port VX, etc.). That way you aren't forced to give up the charging capability and connect everything via USB just to add midi controllers. If it accepts a hub then we're in business!

  • @Ringleader my thoughts exactly! We could have a wireless hub, much like Retronyms' Wej but cheaper, without the dance lights, customizable, and not made by R'nyms...plus it'd most likely arrive sooner too :)

  • It looks great except it doesn't seem to support hubs from what I read. They keep stating for multiple controllers just use multiple pucs... :-( I don't want to buy a puc for each controller. That wouldn't be very elegant. Still very interesting, though.

  • Thanks. Won't work for me as all of my controllers are bus powered.

I wouldn't rule hubs out just yet but I agree this is the make or break feature for me. No way I'd want to manage multiple puc+s. I've asked on their campaign and the response was:

Hi Steve – hub support is something we’re testing. It’s tricky because some hubs require hosts to work properly. Let us know what model and brand of USB hub you’re using and we can see if we can chase down an answer.

The puc+ provides up to 300mA of power and the included USB host cable has a power port that can be used to power the attached device. From the FAQ:

How is the puc+ powered? The puc+ runs on two AA batteries and can easily operate for 8-10 hours on a full charge. The micro USB port will also accept most standard micro USB power supplies if you’d rather an AC power solution.

Can the puc+ power my USB controllers? If your USB controller draws less than 300mA via the USB cable, the puc+ can power your controller. If your controller draws more than 300mA, the puc+’s included Micro USB Host OTG Cable can accommodate the appropriate power supply for your controller and pass the necessary power to it.

  • Cheers @Ringleader interesting

  • Indeed, crossing fingers

  • Only 25 left at $89. Wish they'd update the status about whether or not it accepts hubs though. http://igg.me/at/puc-plus-midi-controller/x/11551750

  • Would the wireless midi one be sufficient? It’s a lot cheaper right now. I am planning on using the Midi din input to iPhone
