MidiBand 3- Launching Midi Drum Loops (Clip Launcher Style)

Hey Guys!

I figured out a new cool use for MidiBand for those of you out there that have it or thought about buying it. As you all know Midiband is a virtual backing or arranger style type of app that can have up to 16 midi tracks of instruments playing back to the chords you play on your controller.

Well, I thought, why not use it as a 12 pad midi Drum looper launcher! I tried it last night and it did work!

I went to Cubasis and created a new project. Created a Midi track and went to the Midi drum loops Section for the Allen Morgan Signature Drums.

So I loaded into the Midi Track all the Midi Drum loops for the "Alive Kit AM" inserting each loop right next to each other in the midi track. Also, leaving a small space between each loop. Loaded up into the midi track the Intro Loop, Verse, Chorus A and B, Bridge, etc....

Once I completed that process, I Mixdown and saved the mixdown as Midi file. So what is cool, once that midi file is done, tap on the Cubasis Share button and select Open In.... and open this midi file into MidiBand.

Once in Midiband, go into the style Edit mode and you can playback the entire Midi file you created in Cubasis now playing back in MidiBand. From there, just select each section that you want to add to each of the 12 pads, and they will automatically Loop and playback at the tempo you select. What is cool is that this is a really nice simple way of playing back a complete drum track while changing sections in realtime!

I have Roland Soundcanvas as my Sound module for MidiBand and I can insert that in Audiobus and record the output to Cubasis or Auria. So I can arm Cubasis to record while I switch midi loops in realtime! or even better, record the entire performance with all the section changes right inside Midiband and have it playback automatically once you're done!

Hope this helps those interested in looping Midi files instead of Audio files as midifiles take up way less space on our iPads and also allow you to change tempo as desired without affecting the sound !
You can also edit the midi files in Cubasis and change them or add to them what ever you wish. So much easier than audio and a lot smaller in file size.

Pretty awsome!

  • Just figured out how to use Cubasis as a sound module for Midiband! So the clips okay exactly as designed and you can use insert effects and all the awesome goodies in Cubasis!

So only two apps needed. Midiband and Cubasis or Roland Sound Canvas!
Will try to put up a demo later!

  • This sounds like a cool idea. I have triggered "drums live" (I think that's the app name) from beatmaker before but it was a pain to set up. With midiband, can you import midi files by the batch? I have a few groove monkee and oddgrooves midi loops collections that are pretty good.

  • Yeah its super cool!
I haven't imported more than one single midifile. I wonder if audioshare will export more than a single file.
But actually, I'm finding that doing it from Cubasis is sooooo much easier. Especially since I have it set up where Midiband send the midi data back to the miditack in Cubasis and when I playback the clips in midiband Cubasis is outputting the sound! Its amazing cause now I can add effects in real time to the drums playing back. And, its all midi so my file stays small. Of course if I record the incoming midi input data from midiband as audio, then I van add other stuff to process it. The sky is the limit here.

I emailed KSH and asked I theres a possibility to make a way to insert each midi drum clip or loop straight into each pad. That would be even easier. But for now it is working like a charm. It fits my workflow amazingly cause I can have all the predetermined loops or clips and add them to each of the 12 pads and have them play back in any order or at any time I wish all in real time and in perfect sync to tempo.

I don't even need any other soundmodule as Cubasis sounds amazing after the latest update. The drums sound huge!!
