Thoughts on Music Studio (by Alex Gross)
I was wondering if there are any Music Studio users here that could tell me what they like/dislike about it as a universal DAW for handling MIDI data (and some audio recording, like guitar). MTS is my favorite DAW on iPad, but I'm kind of looking for a good DAW on iPhone to capture and export sketches when I'm on the go. I downloaded the Lite version, but it doesn't work with AudioBus/IAA. The full $15 version seems pretty full features in terms of data editing, built in instruments, sampling, etc.
Does the IAA hosting actually work? What do you think of the piano roll editor?
Finally, is there any way to delete some of the stock instruments to clear memory space? The full DL is like 700MB, so I'm wondering if I should just try GarageBand or BeatMaker2 again if this one duplicates those same issues. Thanks!

Hi, the interapp hosting works ok but isn't as slick as Cubasis for example the Audiobus connection works well you can have MS in both input and output slots
Personally I like the midi editor except it's not good for triplets but since you have the lite version you can form your own opinion.
There is no way of deleting the built in samples as far as I'm aware but particularly the symphonic sounds are pretty good quality.
They have been keeping it up to date since the days of the iPhone 3GS and the dev is very good at responding to questions and suggestions on the Xewton music studio forum.
Overall I think it's well worth the price of admission.
I would agree that the symphonic sounds are great. I have used them live at church and they sounded great.
It was my first DAW that I bought for my iPad and it is well worth it. I have not really used it on my phone but now that you mention it, I have also been thinking about trying to program some stuff on my iPhone.
From what I can remember, the piano roll was pretty good. I have not tried IAA since it has been updated.
Maybe I will put together a short video showing some of your questions.
Great stuff, thanks! Even on the free version, I was able to set up imported kits and was really liking the MIDI interaction. But I'm pretty sure the free version lacks Core MIDI and AB/IAA of any kind, so it's difficult to assess how it works. The on-board sounds seemed pretty good, and I know the Xewton forums have a lot of great free resources as well.
Anyway, I was less worried about the price and more concerned that it was another DAW that will either get used a ton, or basically not at all. I run into storage issues constantly on my phone, so I really need to strip down to just a small handful of necessary synths and beatbox apps to go along with a full-featured DAW.
@StormJH1 hey bro- too bad no MTS for smart phone...
I like the FL Studio mobile hd version of this (same dev re skinned MS for fruity loops) a little better. It has a drum sequencer along with piano roll, and an onboard synth. The sounds include an emphasis on electro, but an iap will hook you up with symphonic sounds. Like music studio, it exports midi files or audio stems after you sketch.
This was something I used on my phone to make short sketches to be used elsewhere (iPad and Pc). IAA and AB weren't a priority, because I thought I'd change the voices later anyway...
Other choices for IPhone include Caustic and Nano Studio. Arguments here for the high quality of onboard sounds in both, so who cares about hosting etc...
AB and IAA are best of all on iPhone in Beatmaker2, as is sampler, piano roll etc, and that remains my DAW of choice for iPhone for fully fledged projects. (Big app file yes, and I've invested in the IAPs as well...I went for a 64g phone chiefly to run bm2 and my fav big instruments)
FL studio and Music Studio have one up on BM2: iaa hosting of fx is sweet in both.
The next FL Mobile (universal like bm2) holds some promise, as does bm3 which hopefully will be universal as well
This was my first iOS DAW as it was the only one the worked on my old ipod touch. It's pretty solid and good for getting ideas down, the sounds aren't bad either, but the work flow was annoying — midi and audio editing are primitive. It does have unlimited tracks through, which is better than MTS or Auria. I also like the onboard keyboard — you have have dual keyboards and chord pads using the full size of your device making it easy to play. You can easily export your midi ideas to another app too.
Thanks! I did pick it up. At least for the time being, it looks like something that could be useful for sketching basic MIDI data, which could then be sent to MTS on iPad or to pretty much any other app that uses MIDI data. It's not bad as a full-featured DAW, either. I really like the U.I. for menus and clear options for exporting audio, MIDI, etc.
IAA app hosting worked and recorded perfectly, but if you exit the app, it reverts all those tracks back to "Grand Piano". (I read this was a glitch/problem some places).
Is there any type of "freeze" or "convert to audio" option for those tracks?
No freeze yet, it's on the list ....
Only way I have found is to Save project then export it
Thanks. Yep, that would be a nice feature, but less of a big deal for me since I'm not really using it as a "finished product" DAW.
The piano roll editor is pretty solid and the note quantinization seems about as good as I have used in any app. Seems like it also could supplant most of my beatbox apps just by adding a few drum kits.
Drum Kits are easy to add
Composed my first and only symphonic piece completely in Music Studio before it got the IAA update. Haven't been back in for a while, but on the strength of that one experience, I have no problem recommending Music Studio, FWIW.
I use MusicStudio only as a sound module for recording into GB - the iPhone size may have to do with it but the Piano roll sequencer leaves a lot to be desired.
