Apple TV 4

Rumors of the Apple TV 4 to come out in September with App Store, A8 chip, and touch remote. Could be cool but probably as useless for us as the watch. Thoughts?

I have a jailbroken Apple TV 2, with XBMC (now called Kodi) media center on it. I'm using my old iPhone 3GS as a touch remote. It's able to stream 720p content over wifi without issues. The only drawback is that the TV2 can only output 720p. It's a brilliant little media center box other wise, completely quiet etc.

If I'm gonna buy into the whole Apple ecosystem on my entertainment system setup, I also want complete freedom on what applications I can install on the device, and that's not going to happened obviously. I don't think Apple can take over our TVs as easily as with our other gadgets. They really need to allow for open 3rd party things for that to happen. :/

I bought a Chromecast and very happy with this litle dongle. I have a moto-g phone and screen mirror works perfect if you have a google phone. Minimun delay and music, movies etc. works smooth. Sorry to say but if you compare this to chromecast its a high price you pay.

  • How is this difference from the last 10 times or so this was leaked? Well my Apple TV 2 which has been working flawlessly for years has started to show signs of "Apple New Version Soon to be Released" syndrome, it is now crashing and rebooting a couple times a day so I think this leak is finally accurate.

I'll get the new one the second its available. Rumor does include a "full" app store and that would be nice.

I have a Firestick as well and the picture quality completely sucks compared to my Apple TV, but it may just be they way its hooked up to my TV using an active HDMI adaptor. Major Issue I have with it right now is that so many of the apps constantly crash and burn on it. I got it primarily for Sling, but the Sling app constantly crashes and burns the most. I use it a bit, but I use my Apple TV 10 times more.

In any case I've found the best way for me to stream is to stream on my iPad 4 and then airplay them to my big screen via the Apple TV. We have no cable at the house I am in now, but we have Direct TV at another place and I can use that account to watch tons of stuff. Unfortunately the Sling app on the iPad does not support AIrPlay so I need to AirPlay from my Laptop if I am using Sling.

What does it mean to us?

I use my AirPlay all the time to my my Apple TV to play music, its video goes to the TV, but is its audio goes to my primary stereo system. Its the easiest way for me to throw out some decent sound without hooking up to anything. I can hack on tracks setting in my zero-gravity lift chair and listening to my big stereo. NOT THE SAME AS STUDIO MONITORS, but its not bad either.

New Apple TV has a touch screen controller and an app store. How bout a synth for your apple tv, its got bluetooth already so bluetooth midi is not a stretch. The availability of an app store opens up a whole realm of possibilities. How about running Auria on your 65 inch 4K screen?

  • yah i use my airplay for testing mixes too. always good to listen on non studio monitors as well, including crap earbuds etc. as people do use em.

  • I love Apple TV. It's a low cost way to purchase HD movies and TV if you are a collector like me. It's great because you don't have a bunch of Blu rays and DVDs taking up space.

Also AirPlay is great for family and friends. We like to show iPhone pictures and videos, and play YouTube music videos etc. It's going make a big difference in speed to replace the A5 CPU with the A8.

  • I had an apple tv3 and a chromecast. Sold the apple tv as the chromecast works perfectly and can do all the stuff the apple tv can do and more.

  • So can the chrome cast do AirPlay?

  • since a short time cc also supports screen mirror. Its still beta but it works great on my phone and its handy if apps are not yet compatible. When apple tv supports ios to install apps, we have a winner and i run to the store. Hopefully it wil also support mouse and keyboard in the future.

yes you can or you can also connect your android phone to the tv and install a receiver app and use your ipad/phone to use airplay (free airplay)

  • I like the ATV 3 and use it quite a bit to listen to music. For on demand movies it comes down to which is cheaper Apple or DirecTv. Can't see at the moment what an ATV 4 offers that I don't already have.

  • I think I have the ATV 2. (maybe 3). Love it, except when it doesn't work. There is an HDMI cable error that happens quite often and basically requires a full restart. So I probably end up using the Chromecast more b/c I know it will work.

There have been some strong rumors with the A8 chip it will run apps. Also the speed that you can maneuver through the user interface will be greatly enhanced. I purchased about 300 movies over the years and right now it takes about 20 sec to populate the screen.

  • I think it'd be pretty neat if they took the Apple TV and crammed the full iOS experience into it. Like, Auria... on your ginormous TV. Probably not.
