MIDI Routing/Splitting
If I have something like an Alesis Percpad, that sends all it's midi notes out on a single midi channel, is there someway to split that into multiple midi channels, by midi note, and then send those on to something like Thumbjam?
Comments
Check out MIDI Flow.
That looks like it might just do it.
Check this part of the manual. http://www.midiflow.com/documentation/#routings-modifiers-key-range
You basically make multiple input sources for your Percpad. Restrict each to whatever range you want to route differently. Once you have them restricted you are left with multiple split routes and you can point each split at whatever you want.
Bought, and have been playing with it with my iRig keys keyboard, and Thumbjam. Works like a hot damn. Kind of like Audiobus for midi. But I have realized, that not only would I nee to buy the Percpad, but a midi interface, (percpad is standard midi out,) and a midi cable.
Can't seem to find an inexpensive way to do this.
The MIDI to USB is very cheap, these work fine for me:

but get the real Apple CCK adapter, not a cheap knockoff.
Well, damn! I didn't even realize that my iRig Pro has a midi interface. I was browsing around to see what else there was, and found an ad. Sure enough, my box has the midi cable in it. I'm flipping ecstatic. Ordered the Percpad today.
@sonosaurus, is there a way to map individual pads in Drumjam out to individual tracks in Auria, as there is with Thumbjam? So many great sounds in it, and I'd sure like to be able to use them and mix them individually.
There isn't a way to do that now. I may add that in the future (even though every kit has a different count and setup), but I will also be adding a builtin mixer for kits as well.
If anyone is interested in a relatively inexpensive way to add percussion/drums to your mix, where you actually get to hit something with a stick - this all worked. Alesis Percpad, which I picked up for $89.00 plus shipping. Has four pads. It outputs on Channel 10, the notes it sends can be changed. This goes into midi flow, which remaps the individual notes, out onto channels 10, 11, 12, 13. These channels are sent to the first floor slots in Thumbjam, I tell it to start on channel 10). I loaded the Baja kit into all four slots. I then adjusted the note conversion in Midiflow, so that the notes coming in triggered the snare, regular hi-hat, open hi-hat, and crash cymbal. I can of course map to anything in there, but that's a good starter kit - the percpad will also take a kick pedal, which I may look at at some point. I can then pickup each Thumbjam slot on a different channel in Auria. And voila, I have all the sounds in Thumbjam available, four at a time, which is about what my brain can hold, into four channels in my DAW.
Thanks. That's really interesting. Thinking of getting one. How's the velocity sensitivity on the pads though? Is it easy to get (8?) different levels of velocity out if it? I've heard mixed reports.
Confused on why you can't do all that on ch 10 though. Doesn't the percpad send different notes per pad? If so, you might need to remap notes, but I don't get why channel remapping is needed, unless you use different kits on each channel.
Because of the last bit about having Thumbjam send each drum to a different track in Auria... I think.
Ahh...makes sense. Thanks Matt.
That's it. It's only way I know to split the signal that way, and it's the great thing about the setup.
Not sure about the sensitivity yet. Seems to be okay, but I will admit I have not given it enough of a run recording it.
Okay, sensitivity is not that great. Will have to muck with it a bit, it's a bit disappointing. I didn't see reviews like that. However, for the most part, I can muck with gain after the fact, so I'm not too worried. I'm not Steve Gadd, that's for sure.
But the workflow works, really well.
Thanks @rickwaugh
I'm not Steve Gadd either.
My idea was to use DrumJam to live quantise for me.
So:
PercPad > midi into DrumJam (set to quantise) > midi out of DrumJam > Gadget
Thought it might be quite fun to tap out rhythms on something physical.
I might try it with my nanopad2 as a dry run. If the PercPad isn't any more sensitive than that I might as well stick with the NanoPad.
Yes, that's where I'm at. It's way more fun to mess with something playable. I just don't get much of a kick out of programming it.
