Can't buy apps!! Thanks iTunes!

Not mentioning names but the person I married closed our checking account! And I have yet to open a new one.

I bought a gift card and loaded it to my account. I have more credit than the app I wanted to buy is worth but since iTunes wants a debit card/credit card on file I can't buy apps or even free ones!!

Rant over...carry on

    ... from the appstore?

  • Done that, dis-entangling accounts, web and financial is the nightmare!

  • I get credit card offers in the mail almost every day. If you get one, use it for your iTunes account but cut up the card and don't use it for anything else. Make your purchases through gift cards and you are back in control.

    No not an app,lol.

  • I have set up App Store IDs without credit or debit card before. There used to be an option in acc settings to choose to not link to an acc, maybe they changed it

Although it's been a while I've created my Apple ID, it still has no credit or debit card associated with it. I use only gift cards, and it works just fine.

Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method:

  • Haha I feel your pain! I setup family sharing with my significant other to share calendars and reminders. I just put her as the head of the household because she inputs most of the cal stuff. Although I was a "parent" iTunes had to get her permission for an app that I was trying to purchase! I quickly had to change that family tree!

  • You can create an Apple ID without credit card. Go to AppStore and try to download a FREE app then proceed to Apple ID creation. You'll get a NONE option on payment's method page.

This is what Apple says. Usually they are correct (or: somehow correct...), but in this case there is a better method. It works in the most of all cases.

    1. You need a Windows computer with iTunes (ideally 12.6.3 or better and just below 12.7) installed or a Mac OS Computer.

    2. Start the program iTunes, go to your Account and sign in.

    3. Now you can choose "manage" here and change your payment method. Magically you can choose the payment method "none" (that means: iTunes gift cards) - and only with this method.

    4. in Case it does not work: Call Apple and look here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203905

There is the one thing where Apple will always help you: When you will try to give them money.

  • Are you in a family sharing account perhaps? If so I think the "parent" having a card on file is required?

I use a prepaid one for this and if I don't have funds to cover somebodys iCloud or Apple Music I can't even update apps I own let alone 'buy' free ones. Whenever this happens some app or other I have been wanting will usually become free for a limited time!
