[Off Topic] Mac users, Would this 2012 Macbook Pro be a killer music machine with new RAM and HD?

Hi John. I have a Mac mini with the same i5 250GHZ processor and it works great! I've got 8 GBI use Ableton Live 9 and I've run 10 MIDI tracks with plugins. I've never had a problem.
Depending on what you use now, it'll be killer as is
I'll have to check the specs to see if it's the same CPU, but I've got a mid-2012 non-retina MacBook Pro 15" and it handles Logic without any problems or latency. I can even run Maschine at the same time as a plug-in. I'm using the standard HD, all I did was upgrade the RAM to 8gb. Lovely things.
Put in 16 GB, doesn't cost much more and an SSD and your good to go. I use a 2012 i7 MacBook Pro that is on par performance wise with my old 2009 Mac Pro 8-Core, but much more mobile
Same story here. Mid 2009 MacBook Pro still going strong, runs Live with no problems. I would recommend an SSD though, put one in mine recently and it is like a whole new machine.
My 2011 Mac Mini runs like a champ. The only thing I don't like is its' 5400 RPM internal drive. I've got a 3 TB FireWire 800 external drive for my sounds, etc. I would replace the internal drive myself but it's supposed to be a bitch to open the Mac Mini case.
On a similar theme I have a machine that I believe could be turned in a good music laptop - it's a first gen top of the range Macbook Pro from 2006, one of the first to have the Intel chips. It's built like a tank with it's chunky aluminium case, and has been round and round the world several times and has never missed a beat! It needs a new battery and the drives should be upgraded to SSD for music purposes
Opinions please!! Would it be a good music machine?
You're right MacBooks are built like tanks. I've got a 17" from 2003 that still works. But the question is will it run the DAW and plugins you want. How fast is the CPU is and how much RAM is in it? Which DAW do you want to run?
I didn't realise the SSD made such a big difference, might look into that for mine at some point.
SSD make a big difference. Get a DVD drive caddy to keep the original drive and use ssd as well. I moved the original drive to the caddy in the DVD drive and put the ssd where the original drive was. Reason being the connection on the DVD is a slower version of sata.

Ooh clever stuff, thanks - I'll look into this.
@monzo SSD is very good living. Hard reboot on my MBP is faster than doing the same with my iPad.
Wow, that's a lot faster than with a standard drive. I think I'll do this in a month or two, sounds like it'll give a big performance boost and cheaper than buying a new laptop!
based on $ per performance ratio, an SSD upgrade is the best thing you can do for your laptop. Do it ! :-)
I got an extra 1.5 years out of my old MBP with an SSD.
Yeah it really did. I used to have to wait for minutes at a time for the hard drive to catch up and now everything is near instant again. Although it probably helps that I didn't copy most of the junk across. SSD prices are much lower now so there are very few reasons not to do it.
I'm not unhappy with the speed of my MBP when it's running software, but it does take a while to start up, and loading apps is slow too, so sounds like the SSD would definitely give me a couple more years out of it. Brilliant - cheap (relatively) upgrade coming up!
@monzo it is quite amazing how much hd speed bottlenecks the system. I've done it on my 2007 last year, then 2009 Mac Pro this year and it is amazingly fast. Programs open in 5 secs, you can barely read splash screens anymore
That's a massive tip. Just found one for £3 from HK. SATA are so cheap these days too. SSD for boot, SATA for storage, no brains required
Thanks @MirEko for posting about the DVD caddy.
To be honest, i'm not too impressed about an i5 DUAL core chip with just 4GB of RAM and a 5000 rpm hard drive in 2015.
Get a quad core i5 (15" Mbp only, sorry) with at least 8GB RAM and a SSD. Such a machine will last you a few more years
I'd have to check, but it was a top of the range model when released with the fastest CPU and most amount of RAM
I took it to the Apple store a couple of years ago and the Apple guy told me that it was still as powerful as the current Macbook Pros (just somewhat heavier!)
That's great. What DAW are you going to use?
Great news, definitely on my to-do list, but might need to pick a few tech brains on here first!
