  • The Electribes look pretty tasty. I take it you mean the new ones?

  • yah whenever I start thinking BSP my mind wanders to electribe. Then when I think electribe I start thinking well maybe macbook air... sigh

    @syrupcore

  • Slippery slope indeed!

  • Just found out the Electribe 2s are missing an essential feature (for me) for to act as a full on polyphonic MIDI sequencer for external gear: no midi thru! So you can't use a keyboard to trigger a sound module (say, an iPad) while you're recording to the sequencer without using a MIDI splitter. Meh.

    Seems like the kind of thing that could be fixed with a firmware update but as far as I can tell that's still the case.

  • edited September 2015

    True but having a Thru box, especially on a drum/groove box, really gets rid of latency anyway. The Electribe on its own is a wicked sequencer and can control the iPad just fine even though Gadget is still laggy. I also have a BSP and posted on korgforums how to use its drum sequencer and MIDI Solutions box to play both the Volca Beats and bottom row of parts on the E2 as a drum machine. Another guy is handling the note to channel mapping with a Arduino. Since I've been using the BSP I've hardly touched my keyboard controller in the last few weeks. But everyone needs to be aware that some people are experiencing bugs here and there and Arturia is slow on releasing updates. You'll need to dig into their forums and try and figure out what are true bugs and what's PIBKAC.

  • I now have my crazy set up working:

    • BS into Animoog - IAA in Auria

    • NanoPad2 into iElectribe - IAA in Auria

    • Patterning - IAA in Auria

    • Alchemy - IAA in Auria

    • MidiFlow controlling clock routing so that everything runs off the BS clock

    But the problem I'm finding is that's there's just too much going on for my iPad Air 1 to cope with.

    I tried it with AudioBus lanes into Auria and that was just a crash fest unfortunately. IAA makes things little simpler and more stable, but even so - 4 apps into separate tracks in Auria and a fair bit of midi flying around seems to be a problem.

    Bit of a shame because it's a nice set up for jamming semi live minimal, electronica style stuff.

    I might swap Alchemy with something a bit more efficient. And maybe clear some hard drive space. But other than that I'm not sure what else to try.

  • edited September 2015

    The other thing I might try is Garage band instead of Auria. Just for a lower overhead. Then move the tracks into Auria.

  • @mf2k That sounds like a would-be good time. If you already own it, you might try MultiTrack DAW. Really light on resources. That or try something other than Alchemy!

    Thanks for the overview Kdub. I actually have a couple of thru/splitter boxes in play at the moment (plus an ICMA4+) but no mergers. Adding a merger just adds to the price+number of little boxes to contend with. Would you set it up like this?

    MIDI Controller->MIDI Splitter->
            A) Electribe
            B) MIDI Merger
    Electribe->MIDI Merger
    MIDI Merger->MIDI Thru/Splitter->Sound Modules/Synths/iOS...

    Is there a simpler way? I use an Alesis MMT-8 sequencer now which allows you to set the MIDI Out to also behave like a MIDI Thru and I wire it like this:

    Controller->MMT-8->MIDI Thru/Splitter->Sound Boxes

    So I set my controller to the MIDI Channel of the soundbox I want to control and it a) records to the MMT-8 on that channel and b) allows me to trigger/hear the thing I'm recording without any extra gear, repatching or other shenanigans. Maybe that's not actually a common feature on stand along sequencers but it seems like it sorta be.

    Of course, I don't think the BSP allows this sort of setup either but if I buy the Electribe it would be to replace the MMT-8 whereas the BSP would augment it.

    Or... an 16gig iPad 1 with a dock and Genome. :) Would probably need a merger anyway due to latency unless I could find a dock with a hardware thru port.

  • I hate to say it, but @mf2k is right about Multitrack DAW. Unfortunately it's not being kept it up to date very well and not implementing some customer requested features because it's "too hard" to do. So it is what it is, and probably always will be. It does "simple" fairly well.

  • @syrupcore I'm not a big fan of mergers because it can create convolution and errors. You have a iCA4+? You should be able to avoid all that. The big thing I love about the iCA4+ is that it's like a bunch of non-conflicting Thru boxes right out of the box. If you're short on Din connections buy a USB hub and a fist full of iConnect Mio, hook them all into the USB host port and then sell all your thru boxes and mergers to pay for the Mios. That way you can switch clock and transport sources easily without having to re-cable.

    Full disclosure: There are a couple of things in my pile of noise makers not using the MIDI facilities of the iCA4+; the drum machines. The Volca Beats and the Electribe are hosted off the MIDI Din out port of the BeatStep Pro. I have a special arrangement for them and using a couple of MIDI Solutions boxes there to handle it. The BSP is always my clock source as well.

    In the past I've gone almost completely insane trying to maximize flexibility with controllers, sequencers and clock sources with a MIDI setup in a small studio at a local college without routing, just thru boxes and daisy chaining. When I found myself starting to hate MIDI I would just think of the old modular guys and then I'd feel better. Now we have MIDI routers (MOTU, iConnectivity,etc.), holy crap, we live in the future. It's a total blessing and I hope they stay in business.

    Did someone say Multitrack DAW? That's all I use. It's pretty, it's simple, it's quality. If there's another feature I want then there's an app for that.

    Don't get me wrong. I really like it and still use it too, but less and less as Hamilton, (the dev) barely even responds to his own forum for weeks or months at a time. Promises of updates with fixes and features for too long without delivering. It really needs an update for it to be more than a chop shop.

  • It still works well for me, but updates are always welcome. I think the app serves a great niche...light resource, multi-track, IAA instruments and effects.

  • I love you old school midi guys.... Keeping it real with midi thru boxes (I have no idea what one of those is).

    @syrupcore - if you are going to go for the second iOS device route you should seriously check out this USB to USB midi device I just got. It was on a thread about 6 months ago from a nice Spanish dude called Jesus who makes them. I've tested it out and it's pretty much zero latency and it has 4 different ports (so presumably that would solve any midi through issues?). It's literally a case of 2xCCK on either end of it and you can send midi between two iOS devices. So Genome as a super sequencer or whatever (Xynthersizer in the background maybe :)?). In fact once split screen happens you could have mididesigner pro up too and have 64 knobs to virtually turn or whatever. I will find the thread and link to it.

    MTD is about the only app I don't own, you buggers. I guess I better buy it then.

    There you go. £30. So a lot cheaper than a dock if all you want to do is send midi to your iPad from a second iPad or an iPhone.

  • Cheers @kdub. That's a good idea—two or three MIOs would probably do me just fine. At this point, routing would still require the mac but I know they're working on an iOS version at least. In my perfect world midi routing wouldn't require a screen of any sort. I used to have an Akai MP30P (4x8 MIDI router). Missing it again these days and thinking about picking one up again. Would solve all of the above.

    @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Thanks for that. Glad to hear that it works as advertised! When considering a dock for the sequencer-only iPad, I was mostly thinking about MIDI+perma-charging.

  • @kdub, the nerd in me wants details on your "special arrangement".

  • Oh, hell, I have a whole tackle box full of midi cables, splitters, mergers and even some female to female connectors. Hubba hubba. Hot midi action right there.

    I'll PM you my address, @Martygras.

    Great news. Actually I do own it. I was getting confused with MTS.

    I'll give it a try.

  • @kdub that's an amazing write up. Thank you!

    Agree that it would be cool if Arturia allowed per pad MIDI channel in drum mode but, to be fair, it's not just their shortcoming. The feature is really only needed when dealing with Korg boxes (and apps). The E2 should allow you to set any part to any channel, for instance. Then you could do the hack that @zymos detailed in that thread.

  • @syrupcore yeah totally agree. I do think there is another application for it however that would make the BSP exponentially useful in the context of PC and iOS. Apps, be it a DAW, sample player, software groove box, more Korg apps (why Korg?), could use that channel mapping in the BSP, it would control any of them, app developers would be off the hook and Arturia could be the ones to offer the cure. I hope BSP evolves into something really special. It's got my attention.

    This is e great review for iPad users Got it from musicappnews.com and in Apptronica section:
    http://apptronica.tumblr.com/post/130020709009/beatstep-pro-review

  • hi guys! lot of answers, thanks!
    still one question for the BSPro
    how can i 'assign a program change' per pattern?
    i found the way to assign 'program change' to pads, knobs or steps when i'm on 'control mode', but not to a pad of the step sequencer, i.e.
    the final step would be to send a 'program change' to my jomox 999 when i move to another pattern on the BSPro.
    @syrupcore@Matt_Fletcher_2000 ? :)
  • @floma sorry, still no BSPro here. I know that this isn't possible on the regular beatstep though.

  • collegue bought beatstep pro so brought it to test.. damn pretty thing. Was not able to make it working with ipad via usb (even with powered hub) but midi out plus cheap usb-midi interface worked with my iphone nicely. Fired up animoog on channel 2 and thumbjam on ch1.. made some pretty melody

    i think i want one

    I use BSP with iPad only. I power it with RavPower power supply 16000mAs, size of small HDD. Lasts for days.
    It works with unpowered usb hub, directly into iPad via camera kit cable. There is a trick to use it with CKK only and that is push shift + stop and power it on.

    Best is one of those double or triple unpowered splitters. Then you just plug into CKK and it works normally, without shift+stop.

    The new firmware is very good, fixed a lot of things and added new features like chaining, copy paste sequences etc...

     I use BSP either with a keyboard controller or alone. Combination of the two works well, depends on how I want to use the midi controller.
    Works great with most apps....

    Cubasis report: Cubasis doubles the BSP clock when I try and sync it, but when I sync Live 9 with Cubasis, the BSP works like a charm!

    Yes the viddy above mentions the sync clock settings in the MIDI Control Center software that I can mess with too. Lots of settings and controls.

    Just wow.

    Hello,
    You have a double clock issue, happens to me a lot... :smile:
    But as far has I've been with Cubasis, it can't be slaved !!!
    Unless they've upgraded ???
    So normally Cubasis must be the master clock, and if it still the case it's sooooo boring.
