Ack sorry to hear that dude, but yah if experimental is your thing then we are living in a golden holden age with the ipad. For commercial work for hire soundtracks and the like, if I go back down that route, then DESKTOP DAW LAND for sure, but for simple exploration and invention i totaly prefer the pad.

  • Lol no

    Desktop is sooo outdated

The only one I couldn't bring myself to sell was the roland vp9000.

Don't blame you @MirEko for not wanting to sell this.. They're hard to find. I've wanted one of these for a long time. Must be great fun :)

If you ever do come to sell it, I would (probably) pay more than its worth, hint hint ;)

  • Best thing for me about the desktop is being able to grab a sample, edit it for size/whatever, & map it across my keyboard, all of this in like twenty seconds (using FL Studio). It's one of several cases where duplicating the process on ipad multiplies the time expended by a largish number.

For a while now I thought not using a Desktop daw in the music process was simply ludicrous, poppycock, balderdash even but after commiting to the ipad more and more exclusively I find the old addage of being more creative within limitations certainly rings true. four simple apps recording at once in realtime into cubase is actualy kind of liberating compared to the sometimes daunting infinite sequencing possibilities of the desktop daw. That being said... totaly looking forward to Auria Pro... 8) That may be the nail in my bye bye desktop coffin.

Sorry to jump but you can just set those limitations yourself with a DAW, just use plugin or whatever, do all that before even opening the host, makes things really interesting. :)

Anyway i've built up my own palette of sounds and fx over time and i use Maschine and Live extensively so i don't think i could ever switch to an iPad exclusively, i'd have a hard time doing everything on a 9.7" screen...

  • I have a hard time lugging my nord on the train. 8)

  • And this week's winner of the Forum's Self-Abuse Synonym Trophy goes to @AudioGus:

    lugging my nord

    Well played Sir.

He gave it a fair shake though. :D

  • blush. Well it is heavy.

  • 2 reasons why I think a desktop DAW is important to add to an iPad studio:

    1. Not everything in iOS syncs correctly with an iOS DAW.

    2. A desktop DAW is easier to use because you have a much larger screen to see what you are doing.

Haha, my vp9000 is absolutely mint. Still looks brand new and has max ram installed too. Was inspected by perfectcircuitaudio before I bought it and even the lcd screen is mint. I love the ability to generate harmonies on samples without retriggering the sample. So great.

I agree. These days I work a normal job and music is about fun more than anything else.
It wasn't all bad. I kept my most experimental software :D
Still got all my TwistedTools software, propellerhead reason, and Reaktor.

  • I've only used Cubasis on my iPad until I bought a Macbook Pro and decided to purchase Logic Pro X. Initially, I was faced with a dilemma: Over the years of using iOS as my primary and ONLY music production platform, all the synths that I paid for now seemed to be useless, and I felt like a huge amount of money has been wasted. On the other hand, Desktop offers advanced vocal editing tools (Eg. Logic's Flex Pitch, Melodyne...) that are simply unavailable on an iPad.
Just 2 days ago, I found my solution with a device called iConnectMidi2+, it functions like Audiobus except between devices rather than iPad apps. After correctly routing the MIDI, which literally took 2 hours for me as I was absolutely oblivious of what I was doing, I was finally able to use my iPad synths in Logic Pro X. So, long answer to your question haha, but yes. Desktop DAW + iPad is perfect for me.

  • @StarShootex not close to doing this myself (today), but that's pretty inspirational...thanks.

iConnect is awesome! To purchase plugins like the synths, etc would be very expensive. Plus I like the touch screen with the virtual knobs and sliders better than using a mouse. It would be great to control all of my desktop plugins on the iPad.

  • i have the icm4+, best ipad accessory i ever bought. and i often use it without ipads too.
