Synth Recommendation for Cinematic Work
Hi everyone, I'm very new to synths (and iOs music making) and am looking for an app that has the best cinematic sound presets/pads in your opinions. I just heard Alchemy and really liked the sounds but also found out that the app is no longer available Any other recommendations?

I'm a relative noob here (and I use an iPhone5) but just off the cuff I would look at: MusicStudio, ThumbJam, iFretless Brass, iFretless Sax, iSymphonic, and maybe the Roland Sound Canvas, since you seem to need that kind of instrumentation.
Is there only one type of sound that is “cinematic”?
@necrome It depends on what kind of movie you are going to score. If you want the traditional movie orchestra iSymphonic is a great choice. Very high quality sounds.
@Jocphone lol Nice one.
I got Thumbjam and it's been working great. I'm mostly looking for grand sounding sustained ambient presets and LotR/Hans-Zimmer type stuff )
I would try Virsyn's Addictive. It can do those kinds of ambient sounds quite well.
For weird soundscapes and sound effects try TC-11. It's relatively pricey so you can buy TC-Perfomer and get all the presets and see if you like it.
It does FX, stereo patches and playability really well.
If you are not looking to get into sound design, I think SynthMaster Player has sounds that you might like for 'big' soundtracks. It is freemium, so you can take it for a spin before deciding whether you want to invest in more sounds.
@necrome all good suggestions here. When I think of LotR/HZ my first thought is of bombastic low brass and double bass, and soaring strings. So +1 on iSymphonic and also the Miroslav IAP for Sampletank (which occasionally goes on sale).
SampleTank with its expansion packs is a good choice.
Yup, what they said. Plus I'd add Mitosynth, Animoog, and SoundScaper
Helsinki in Gadget?
^ With Cinematic Piano from Module!
@necrome - Yes, Alchemy is/was the ideal candidate app, there is even a sound pack entitled Cinematic!
For beyond what's been mentioned...you could try: Thor, CrystalSynth XT, or Nave, (so many synths!). iSymphonic Orchestra has been mentioned, but from the same developer (Crudebyte) is Oriental Strings. It has fab string sounds at a decent price ($9.99).
There's KORG Module as JGY mentioned above, but beyond excellent sounding pianos it has Electric Pianos, Organs and some interesting synth strings.
Also from KORG...iM1...which I like a lot "mo better" than Roland SC. Both have tons of sounds so it just might take a while to find what you need...but it's probably in there.
And don't overlook GarageBand, some really decent sounding strings and other instruments in there...and the price is right!
you guys are so helpful! I am a super proud owner of Module and the Ivory IAP and the Cinematic Piano sound is amazing! I've been wanting to get iSymphonic but the price and file size is a huge deterrence >_<
I think I'll give Addictive Synth a purchase since it's on sale and much cheaper than the other synths at the moment! Synths scare me with the amount of controls in them!
Mitosynth and Sunrizer can both deliver the epic.
Also check out AUFX:Space to add a little epic to whatever you come up with. You might also want to check out Crystaline for similar epic oriented additives.
Also, +1 for Crystal and SynthMaster.
yah Synthmaster is butt easy and fun to use as it is just a big whack load of presets with xy pads and minimal controls. 800 presets for like ten bucks or whatever it was was such a good deal! Makes the 6 bucks for 50 presets they offer... Mmm not too tempting heh.
I've been playing with Synthmaster and Addictive for the last 2 hours and they are great for my usage! The Randomizer in Addictive is amazazing! Anyone knows how I can program the volume knob on my iRig Keys to always adjust the volume levels of the apps as a default function?
That's not auto mapped? I know the volume knob works on isem and imini workout me having to set anything in particular. Those are really the only two I use live with the irig keys
Most iOS synth apps have core MIDI and virtual MIDI modulation (cc1) and pitch bend implemented from day one. Some also have volume (cc7) and pan (cc10).
Nope the Synthmaster and Addictive Synth don't have them mapped by default
SampleTank, Alchemy, Mitosynth
For a different spin on "Cinematic", try Jordantron, and ppg wavemapper.
iOS devs that are implementing MIDI should always follow the MIDI standard. The fact that it is so well-defined is one of the reasons its still around.
I have done some pretty cinematic work with just the original M1. With the number of presets available and the tweak-ability, the iM1 will take you far. Just look beyond what everyone refers to as "cheesy". There's a lot there.
M3000. Having a fully loaded Mellotron on your iPad is just too fucking cool.
Poor man's versions include thumbjam, as well as free mellotron sound fonts.
I've got a ton of "vintage" synths on my iPad, but for some reason, I can't buy this one, or the fairlight. There are a lot of ways to get at those sounds. That said, it's pretty cool.
Bismark 16i is a good choice because it can play thousands of soundfonts. You can have your choice of strings, synths, drums, etc. It's the most versitle.
I've used Thumbjam and Bismarck 16i and agree both are great apps. I especially enjoy Bismarck as it was one of the first apps I ever bought and I loaded it with lots of great sounds. But the M3000 is just iconic, and uses the original tapes. You can't beat that with a stick.
Having said that, I didn't plunk down $75 US for the "Gold Edition" to get everything at once ... I bought the original app on sale and added the in-app soundpacks gradually over a number of months until I had them all, before they came out with the "all in" version. Turned out to cost about the same, but I was able to spread the investment over several months.
Having said that, $75 bucks for a loaded mellotron on your iPad is money well spent. It's amazing how useful it is, way above and beyond the "Strawberry Fields" and Moody Blues vibe. I've already used choir and horn sounds on two different songs for my Sci-Fi project and I'll probably use the M3000 on many more tracks. If it goes on sale, I say grab it if you can. I would mine the hell out of it if I were working on something "cinematic"
Lovely app. A recipient of no less than THREE "lovely-jubblies" from Doug in a single demo plus an elbow solo – quite possibly a STR record:
True dat!
