Awesome vid. What an original shape too.
I am a bit skeptical about that nice violin tone actually coming from that piece of plastic. ( I'm guessing it's PLA) Especially since ABS and PLA aren't very dense when printed as opposed to traditional injection molding. On the other hand, the lack of density could be the very factor that allows a wood-like tone to come from that material.
Anyone remember how hard the Parker series of guitars were to get designed properly?
The tone was impressive, but I have no idea on what was used. Gotta wonder where it will lead and how pricing would be impacted. Of course it may just mean you buy a 3d printer and make your own.
I loved this video. Definitely a lot of potential here. As @funjunkie27 said, I'm interested to see what pricing would be like. I think in the next 5 years (probably sooner) when prices go down and 3D printing becomes even more mainstream, everyone will have one in their house.
Heres how they made it
Mmmm....I can probably cancel my 3d printer order then. ;-)
From the video @thesoundtestroom linked to, it appears it was designed for looks and required surfaces primarily, and acoustic properties weren't a factor. Except maybe the wooden bridge. Maybe that's where most of the tone for an electric is coming. Maybe they are running the instrument through something to add body tone like a convolution reverb.
I thought homemade 3d printing was under threat from gun control advocates and also patent trolls blocking bespoke dildos and such..
You mean you can shoot dildos with a home made gun?
Yup, that's exactly what i mean.
When does the season end?
I can imagine the threats.
It seems like they can also shape the violin to suit the playing style. Just like with a solid body electric guitar versus an acoustic, most of the tone will be coming from modifying the signal output from the instrument. You still need to know how to play a violin to get the sound in the video. The vibrato can take quite a long time to learn, let alone master.
In a couple of his novels William Gibson proposes that 3D printing will be order a design, modify if you have the skills, and run down to your local print shop to pick up the finished piece. Sounds reasonable to me.
