Using patterning to sequence elastic drums 1.6
I've tried routing patterning midi into elastic drums, then midi learn in ED. Doesn't seem to work.
This would be a great combo anyone got this working?
Comments
It would. I might try it at some time.
Patterning only sends Midi Notes though. So isn't it just a question of sending the right notes out from Patterning (which you determine inside Patterning) to meet the default ones in ED (you can look this up in their manual I believe). It shouldn't require using midi learn in ED.
In my case it could be user incompetence, but I tried to slave ED using apps like Gestrument and others as masters just sending MIDI clock to ED, but really couldn't make it work with most of them. Not sure if something's buggy with MIDI in ED but it sure is hard to set up.
(Not being a drum app expert), I could get them running by setting midi out in patterning to 'elastic' + in ed also 'elastic' for midi in, with 1 - 6 responding to patterning's notes from c2 upwards.
Should be easy using midi learn on the jam page in elastic
Just tried my theory, it worked. Patterning triggering elastic drums
I did it by turning on one note at a time out in patterning, clicking midi learn on one of the trigs in elastic jam. Rinse repeat and send clock from patterning than make sure background audio is on in both.
Ooooh - I just had an idea based on that... @MirEko...
Although patterning doesn't send out any Midi CCs - if you send one of it's instruments to send pitched MIDI, I could then convert notes to cc's. That could be really useful. Thanks!
This is potentially great, although unless I'm not doing it right there's no way to save the midi learned settings for the jam panel in elastic drums, it seems to reset on startup even if you save a preset. This means I probably won't use it much with patterning until you can save the midi learned setups..... A shame if so.
Edit: just tried Patterning to Seekbeats and with the pattern I'm using it causes Seekbeats to glitch and the sound stops until restart. Seekbeats seems pretty fragile with midi in still.
Cont.: With Oscilab's drum sequencer to elastic drums I found them no be the midi notes 36-41 however.
Try and octave above or below if you're having issues. Sometimes apps have a different calibration when it comes to octaves. I've found this with Patterning to Seekbeats for example. Or it might have been Oscilab to Seekbeats - I forget.
Yup very common problem. Drive me crazy with hardware for awhile until I discovered a thread somewhere about it. 10min later everything was working as it should
@Dchild - playing with elastic drums I just had a thought.
Are you sending Midi in on a specific channel (rather than just 'omni' or 'all')? I think ED might need you to select a channel when you send MIDI in - and it may even need to be channel 10 (traditionally the Midi channel used for drums).
I tried doing the reverse - getting ED to use Patterning sounds for an ED rhythm. Connected ok, but it plays the Patterning kit, and rhythm, when I hit the ED play button.
