I'm lost, need some pointers

Hi

I'm trying to work in a multi app environment, and I was hoping audiobus is the glue, that makes it possible/manageable/bearable.

However I'm having problems with apps not restoring correctly.

Did a test-tune, using beatstep pro, caustic, patterning, xynthesizr and mimix. Caustic doesn't load song, xynthesizr forgets where to listen to sync, patterning forgets to send sync to the beatstep pro.

I tried adding genome to the mix, seems it can address "virtual ports", which seems a more restore-able way to sync apps. Unfortunately it seems genome forgets to store/restore it's tempo.

So I need some help: Am I doing something wrong? Any app/additional glue I should know about? A good "traditional sequencer, ala caustic with good, samplebased instruments" that saves/restores perfectly with audiobus? A list of really well-behaved apps (again, mostly going for the saving/restoring thing) that I could cherry pick from?

    Two recommendations I can make:

Cubasis: should let you sequence any virtual MIDI iOS synth, has great routing and is relatively easy to use. The piano roll editor is a little clunky and there are some bugs, but overall it's a pretty nice app for working with synths on iOS

KORG Gadget: it's biggest disadvantage is that it's a closed shop, however in terms of workflow it's pretty much unparalleled on iOS, it's very easy and pleasant to use, so much so that most people don't miss the ability to sequence other synths (this is obviously helped by the very wide range of sounds available).

To summarise: Cubasis is more open, but Gadget is nicer to use.

  • Thanks, will look into the suggested apps. How about something samplebased? And somethings more generative, maybe in a structured fashion (like a song-based structure)?

I really like patterning, it's samplebased, it makes it easy to make automatic, almost endless variations.

Beathawk might fit the bill for a sample-based app that can create songs. I'm not that mad on it myself but I only got it very recently, so it might be lack of knowledge.

Gadget makes it easy to create variations in a song structure though, and it has two samplers.

  • It might be best to focus on apps that support AudioBus state saving, so you can have a more reliable environment.

Right. And how to spot apps with good/great/poor audiobus state saving support?

  • I don't think a multi-app workflow where everything remains "live" is feasible right now on iOS. The only sensible workflow is to use a DAW like Cubasis and record the tracks, or use an all-in-one solution like Gadget.

Audiobus and IAA simply don't work all that well if you intend to use them over multiple sessions. This might change with the AU units in iOS 9, but for now this is the state of things.

At the risk of repeating myself, if you want a decent workflow Gadget really is the only option right now.

  • Hi @a773 what are you using on your AudioBus output slot to record your monsta multi app environment with?

@a773 and I think by storing some presets of your preferred combinations of your environment with midibridge/midiflow.

  • For multiple sessions with cubasis and different apps I just name files/patches appropriately, like track8v1 or whatever works etc. and just taking notes. It can maybe take a couple minutes to set up a track again but can be done and doesn't have to be lost forever. After a while a system emerges and you get used to the quirks like 'oh i have to run this app first before adding it to cubasis' or 'oh thor forgets the midi input' etc. But yah sometimes i just love loading up gadget and getting to it.

I wouldn't have the patience to do that, working in Cubasis I just record the track and be done with it, seems to be a lot less hassle. Once it becomes this inconvenient to be able to recall the synth and settings, I would rather just commit to what I have.

    patterning, xynthesizr, genome

    Works w/ Gadget.

I'm working on a live setup involving the BeatStep Pro and my modular synth, so no recording. I've been having mimix on the end of the chain, though, mostly to be able to mix/mute audio from different apps in one place.

  • I've got the pen-and-paper ingrained in me, so screenshots or iPhone camera pictures do the trick for me. I usually know when a track is done done, but I bet almost half of my camera roll is effect settings.

  • Hehe mine too.

Sounds interesting. Personally I'd have some sort of backing track/s to fall on to but that's me..

I think an air2 would struggle running 6 apps at once (depending on the apps). That's quite a strain on the RAM. Maybe this is why you had trouble with apps restoring. Don't forget that AudioBus counts as a running app (using a piece of RAM).

Here's a vid I like.. See the iPad (bottom left) being used as a vocoder.

  • If I read correctly @a773, and your looking for a sample-based app for generating music in a live context, you may, depending on musical style, give Tin Pan Rhythm a look. Inexpensive, super easy to use, clean interface, dev has assured that saving patterns feature is on the way. You could always pair it with Loopy to fill out your live sound as needed. Just a thought :)

As mentioned elsewhere, I believe this is close to the upgrade that I think will get it on to a lot of forum member wishlists etc.

  • I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but the order you reload state saved apps in AB, seems to be crucial to reloading multiple apps. It's not easy to figure with some apps, but I have found that many effect apps prefer being loaded after the input slot has been loaded.

  • First you should be sending your master midi clock from the beatstep pro.

Hardware midi clock is generally more stable and it will be sending the same clock and same delay in the signal to all apps at the same time.

If your using patterning as master clock I've noticed that the clock skips when app switching. On the other hand when I use a hardware clock my apps are much more reliable.

Please try sending master clock from beatstep pro :D

  • MIDI sync connections are not part of the state saving feature. They may or may not retain the setting but that will depend on the app and also the sequence in which you start the apps.
