Despite low cost apps, who wants more demo versions?
Title says it all. Despite most apps being relatively inexpensive compared to desktop equivalents, except maybe apps like m3000, Cubasis, Auria, and a few others in the ios sphere(including cheaper apps with a lot of IAP) who else feels like there is a very large shortage of demo versions of apps? I don't have to have a lot of the full features or sounds for a lot of them, but a small sample of what it is capable of would be nice. Watching a youtube video isn't enough for me as i really need to get my hands on the app first and foremost. Testing out the workflow, GUI, how the app works with others, etc. For me, dropping $50 on a app total (including any and all IAPs for effect, patch banks, track count upgrades, etc.) is a bit steep if i find myself not liking and never using it( then coupled with the arduous methods to get a refund, if one will even be given). I feel some stripped down demos would be nice to at least get a general feel/vibe of the app. At that point i wouldn't even mind spending more for it.

I do not feel that there is a shortage of demos given the price point and development expense. coming from the games world making demos can be a lot of work And take away from your core product.
Having said that i would love there to be more. I bought the player for TC11 and within an hour bought the full version. I think if it is realtively easy for the dev to make a stripped down demo version that still has purchase apeal or they simply go the iap route that is great. When i think of a lot of apps though it would be tough to simply design a demo version on paper that is effective and doesn't kill the core experience of the full version.
In the end I think app sales fascilitate a role in this in that they get it in more hands, more buzz and overall reviews etc. which should help someone decide.
I love STR reviews, but nothing beats getting hands or ears on. I love how Mobile Pod does it, all devices can be listened to by playing some loops through them. No cut down devices to try, just can't play your own guitar through it.
I don't mind how some apps like how IK does their apps like Sampletank and Amplitube does it. A free version and a paid version. Both are essentially the same. One includes most if not all the IAPs except some of the more "expensive" expansions. One is relatively stripped down and allows you to purchase what you want in intervals when and if you wish. Sure the latter still does not give you a full idea of the breadth the app, but it at leadt gives an idea of the features available.
In the game world today, demos that do exist are essentially the full version that has just been locked down. If you a cracker/hacker type....a lot of the full version already exists on disk or in the file. Same could be done here with free/demo versions thwt wouldn't require an full build and developmemt time for the "demo" version. Im not a huge fan of "paywalls", but many demo versions today have become a product of that model. You are gettimg the full version for me, locked away, andmif tou want the full version, just pay for it on the app via a menu. A lot of times, it doesn't require extensive programming from the ground up.
I have one problem with the Sampltank approach. I downloaded the free app then bought the full pack in the sale. I then got the multipack of Sampltank, iElectric and iGrand on sale. Now I have 2 sampletanks and am unable to get all the sounds into one without rebuying one of the packs. I have emailed them, but each suggested they give to achieve this has failed.
From Apple's App Review Guidlines:
There's not a shortage of demo apps, there are NO demo apps, because Apple does not allow us to make any. So we have to go the freemium route or make super cheap apps with in-app purchases to compensate for that. Every developer would love to offer demo apps.
But with mobile pod you need some line 6 hardware to unlock it ....
You get it free with the hardware, or can pay to have it unlock and use with audiobus
I don't think demo versions are economically practical at this price level. They're extra work for the developer, both to create and to support. For US$10 apps, I'd rather they put that energy into the app.
A recent update allows you to use it with additional hardware if you buy the IAP.
It seems to me that free apps with limited functionality could serve the purpose.
I like the idea of being able to test app stability with a free version, with an IAP to unlock the full app.

I could not agree more.
i thought free 'lite' versions was a way around this?
demos would have saved me a lot of money on synth apps that I had to return - like Thor- The semi modular engine appealed to me but the sound and interface horrified me when I bought it- same for the PPG apps- I originally bought my iPad Air to get the PPG- but I just couldn't groove with any of them- all too late to get a refund-
likewise demos would have alowed me to experience the greatness of synths like Animoog- which I only just bought about a month ago- I never got it before because I am not really a fan of Moog - but when I did finally get it- WOW- it really is a wonderfully euphoric instrument-
