Maybe you could use the midi recorder in Nurack:
thanks White! this looks good and clean.
@TonalityApp is about to develop such an app now, a combined live scrolling piano notes view combined with simple multichannel MIDI recording and MIDI file export.
rs2000: sounds good.
all i want is not an editor or fancy toys:
just a clean low cpu direct recorder with start stop and maybe auto naming (and share the midi file via email)
seems that there is none...
Anthony Saunders makes a great MIDI recorder (Photon AU) for £5.

jonmoore: thanks! Photon is great but not updated- so it has issues here...
fantastic app. hope he will update it.
Yes, I unfortunately had to stop recommending Photon. Forget what the main issue was, didn't record sustain CCs or something along those lines
I used to like photon but there are some problems. The lack of state-saving/restoring is a drag. you have to explicitly save any data you record pad-by-pad and reimport the data in each session.
Useful if doing a one-off recording and exporting the MIDI but cumbersome if you want to reload a session and play back what you recorded.
Atom 2 works pretty well as a black box recorder.
Atom 2 and LK seem to be the only real solutions for midi recording and exporting in AUv3 format atm. Xequence 2 is another stand alone solution but not very simple. Sounds like Loopy Pro might have this functionality at some point also. But not sure when.
@waka_x you can check out LoopBud as well. Super simple and fast for MIDI recording/looping.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/loopbud-auv3-midi-recorder/id1554773709
Does loopbud capture/play back non-note MIDI and multi-channel MIDI without quantization?
I was only thinking of one-off recording and export.
For more sophisticated needs it's a toss-up between Xequence 2 and Atom 2, depending on your particular preference. I have soft spot for Xequence 2 as it reminds me of the good old days when sequencers were strictly non-audio. It also happens to be super tight when sequencing external hardware.
I still have my Alesis MMT-8, which occasionally gets dusted down for a spot hardware sequencing nostalgia. Xequence 2 is the iPad equivalent for me, and it's just as much fun, once you become accustomed to its idiosyncratic workflows.
Midi Recorder with E.piano is what you might want.

Atom 2 will record/playback everything except sysex including multi-channel and MPE. It also has sample-accurate (or close to it) timing.
I am not sure what you are talking about. Photon records/plays back sustain pedal and CC's. Until Atom 2's blackbox mode came along, it was the only MIDI AU recorder I know of that records and plays back all MIDI info (except perhaps sysex -- about which I am unsure).
Perhaps you are remembering an issue from the initial release that was fixed in an update?
I think Photon is pretty great as a recorder -- but the workflow is pretty cumbersome for anything other than record then export with no intention of reloading (since the pads need to have their midi reassigned every time the AU loads).
It has several recording and playback modes. Check the manual for details. Several options were added over the course of the first couple of months.
Looks great!
No AUv3 version but it can run and record in the background, record sysex and MIDI clock (rare!) and even act as a virtual MIDI loopback device!
I also like that the app can automatically trim the recording to remove leading and trailing silence 👍🏼
I was looking for a multichannel midi recorder and forgot about this one, works great just sitting in the background and can also save straight to iCloud for picking up elsewhere.
Have a look at GigRig MIDI+ by Audeonic.
@waka_x I’m working on an app that does exactly this! See https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/47179/midi-visualizer-testers-ideas-wanted
Let me know if you’d like to help test it
Stumbled across this thread as I am still looking for a black box flight recorder app which will run independently of host transport. So far this one has ticked the most boxes, though I still need to have a proper longer session with it. Really easy to use and you can just leave it running in the background while it does its thing. Means I can experiment in Loopy and know that if I wanted to get back to the MIDI then it would be there. Another thanks for this recommendation @audiblevideo
As a bonus it seems to record with enough precision to capture Animoog/GeoShred noodlings, although so far I have only managed to play them back in the MIDI Tape Recorder app.
Tip: unless the built-in synth is active and the app set to play in background then recording stops when you switch focus. You can turn the synth volume down to zero though.
The app that @TonalityApp is working on looks like it was going to tick even more boxes. With the arrival of Loopy and the convenience of going directly to audio then an app like this which can keep the original MIDi safe is going to be very useful to have.
Yeah, this is a good app and hopefully will eventually let you record independently of the host transport as that is what limits it as a black box type of recorder.
Ah, so it can. It seems that you need to pre-define the number of beats though first before it will let you start recording, or is there a way around that?
Edit: unfortunately it also reacts to the host transport, e.g. if I start recording independently then play with the AUM transport then it reacts to this.
.
That's easy, I'll add that to the next update.
