Best app to hum or sing into and produce midi notes?

Mostly right there in the title.

Do you know/like any apps that do this passably/well/brilliantly etc?

I often wake up with half a tune in my head but lose it somewhere between pyjamas and breakfast. Would love to gruffly warble into something that might represent my tune in notes I could then export/open/play in another app etc.

Grateful for all suggestions.

  • I already have recommended others like Midimorphosis and FAC Evolver
But Thumbjam does so much already, and you can use it as an Audio to Midi sketchbook

  • Can I share a different perspective?
I think you should use the Voice Memos app and record that idea immediately. That way, when you're free, you can further develop that idea.

For Audio to MIDI, the suggestions they mentioned above are great. I personally would re-record my draft recording when I'm in production mode.

Once I have the idea, I then use an app like TONALY, make quick chord progressions, and develop it into a full idea.

  • Thumbjam can do this too. I always forget that.

I see you beat me too it… lol.

  • If you want to give it a chance Humbeatz does vocal —> midi for percussion and chromatic notes.

Does FAC Evolver do notes aswell?. Can it work like Midi guitar kind of?. Thought it only did transient stuff.

I made it as hard to find as possible for some reason!

    Lol.

Hey at least it’s in there… TJ is packed with great features, it’s a great app. The A2M does slip my mind from time to time, maybe it could be slightly more featured somehow. I know there’s limited space, maybe just making it slightly clearer by putting the word midi in there… Mic ‘Pic’ -> Midi, or something. Just a little more direct. Don’t mind me I’m just thinking out loud.

Excited about your new app too, cheers!

Wait. Maybe I got things mixed up here
Gotta do a double-check on this

    Maybe on iphone!
On the iPad it's already there... Easy and in your face  in the good way, that is

  • How well do these options work in the shower? Do any have water-noise filters? Do they still work with the phone in a ziplock bag?

  • @sonosaurus thanks for the pic. I saved it since I always forget the settings.

  • Mr JG, as a forum veteran I am surprised you would not already know about the amazing Thumbjam’s audio to MIDI conversion ;-)

But for your specific usage, I would agree that voice memos might serve you better.

Another idea: Music Memos! The now defunct Apple app for quick audio recording ideas that can get extrapolated with some basic bass line and drum accompaniment. Remember that thing? It’s been removed from the AppStore but if you ever downloaded it on your iTunes account you can still get it. And there’s a tab to export into GarageBand

Yeah, getting a recording of that in midi form using TJ is not going to be easily set up for a barely awake person...

You can try "A2M real-time Audio to MIDI" - it is free to dlownload (with IAP for full unlock). In free mode you get 3.5 minutes each time you use it. That would be enough time for you to sing your tune... you might not even need the unlock.

Yea I tried free mode out today, not bad, I sent it to atom to record then into a synth. For getting down ideas it’s great, that should be enough time for a quick melody. worst case if you go past 3min 30sec you just have to close A2M and open a new instance when it locks up, or buy the IAP.

Sometimes you have to improvise to get a clean signal.

^ This. Not perfect, but it works as well as anything.

I recommend just bringing a really expensive mic with you into the shower.

I dunno, it always ends up sounding washed out. Maybe I have the wet mix set too high.

I’m going to throw in the towel before this comes to a head.

  • another good reason for a bath :)

an app unlike but really like the kind of app you ask for is singscope ..

    https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/singscope/id944309175

it doesn’t make midi of you, but it does record and draw your warblings

i like it - i believe it’s free, with inexpensive iap
