Best isolating passive headphones (2021)?

I want a pair of isolation headphones without active noise canceling, I have a big head, and I plan on using them with my iPhone and a adapter dongle.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

  • DT 770 PRO - 32 Ohm - the 32ohm will drive very easily from a phone and dongle, and isolate wonderfully. Extremely comfortable as well, I too have a big head (I wear a size 7 3/4 hat for ref)

Audio-Technica ATH-M50X - also very easy to drive from the phone, and isolate fairly well! Never had a comfort or fit issue, even with my larger head.

  • I've had the ATH-M50X's and I find them not so comfortable when wearing glasses and they put quite a lot of pressure on the head (got relatively big head too) and my ears got sweaty after ~45 minutes of use...

Currently I'm very happy with my Sony MDR-7506's. Very comfortable fit and no clamping on the glasses B)
Only downside is that the cable is on the longer side...

  • I’m finding Sennheiser HD25 comfortable with glasses, they have a double band so quite adjustable. Replacement/complement for my 25ish year old HD25SP.

  • The only time I’ve ever worn my glasses for music was when I was in the marching band. It was for obvious reasons (for people that had their glasses on).

Are those "around " or "on top" of the ear?

Isolation is key, not good mixing audio.

    How is the isolation? Thanks!

  • AKG K-371. Good for big head / big ears (trust me 🤷), pretty good isolation, and really good sound in its price range. Morphit has a profile for it, if that is something you are interested in.

For me it's enough even though its not 'total isolation' from the outside sounds but enough to let me focus on the content.
Even at relatively loud listening there's very little leakage (ie. if you need to record into a microphone and listen to playback).

For casual listening on the go I use the AirPods...

Even with closed-back (which provide better isolation) there's also the matter of preference, on-ear or over-ear.

The Sennheiser HD280's (over ear) are quite comfortable and the HD25's (on-ea) have for me a bit too much pressure for extended listening periods.

The absolutely best way to pick a pair is to make a trip down to you local music store and take a listen...
...this since headphones are very much a matter of personal preference. You need to find a pair that works for you.

Also worth remember is that it takes time to 'get to know' the head-phones...

As @Samu mentioned these are on ear - isolation is enough that I don’t hear my wife when she talks to me if I have them on, doesn’t go down well 😂

  • The Sennheiser HD280 Pro's are rated with up to 32db of passive isolation which should be good for most cases...

  • AKG-K371 is said to be very close to the Harmon curve, if that's what you are after.

  • This page has a list of isolation db figures for most if not all the headphones mentioned in this thread:
