TB DualVCF vs Volcano 3
Am I confuse or DualVCF is a cheaper alternative to FF Volcano 3?
I'm looking for a warm analog filter for my iPad to use when I play guitar. Something Auv3.

As far as I’m concerned, the TB apps either rival or get very close to the Fabs for a much cheaper cost. But there’s a little extra magic in the Fabs (UI design, filter sounds, easy mod capabilities) that throws them over the top. It sounds like you’d be happy with the TB, but with the Fab Volcano you can rest assured you’ll never need to worry about buying another all-purpose filter ever again.
Volcano is like DualVCF on a bunch of steroids. Both have their place depending on the use.
Another thing to consider is - DualVCF is universal, and Volcano 3 is not.
Agreed.
yeah, I’ll double down on that too. If you go ToneBoosters only, you’ll be satisfied by the app and by the fact that you saved money not buying FabFilter. If you buy the FabFilter stuff, you’ll be be satisfied because there is nothing better and your sounds and songs will benefit. Neither will make bad sounds/songs good and both will will make great sounds/songs shine.. But FabFilter apps are the best in show on iOS, if you ask me.
Edit: TB ReelBus and FF Q3 are on every track (or at least every bus) of everything I do.
Totally different things Volcano 3 is a tweakers delight
Just about the only advantage TB DualVCF has is that it runs on the iPhone while Volcano 3 is iPad only...
TB Dual VCF vs Volcano 3, no contest.
Forgetting about Volcano's vastly superior modulation capabilities, the filter modeling is simply better in Volcano 3.
Toneboosters fx are great value, but there's not a single TB effect plugin that betters its Fabfilter peer. It's great that Toneboosters offer low-cost alternatives that function well but if you can afford Fabfilter the extra investment will prove worthwhile.
☝🏻Said it all
It's not an alternative to Volcano 3, but if you are looking for a warm analog filter and not some crazy filtering tool — go with DualVCF. Volcano 3 is fantastic, but my guess is that most people don't need it.
No contest.
Toneboosters are iOS.
Fabs are not.
They say that they are, but they are only on iPadOS.
Toneboosters are the best.
But @Montreal_Music clearly stated:
If cross-platform were a critical need, it would discount Fabfilter completely, but it wasn't.
As I stated in my original post, forgetting all of Volcano 3's advanced features, the filter modeling is superior. And whilst Volcano 3 is discounted over Xmas, there's not a huge difference in price either. Plus Volcano scores well in terms of it's UX, this is the killer feature unique to all Fabfilter products. TB has attempted to copy the Fabfilter UX but it's a pale imitation.
But @Montreal_Music clearly stated:
If Universal were a critical need, it would discount Fabfilter completely, but it wasn't.
EDIT: I said cross-platform earlier and had intended to say Universal.
There is the odd TB plug-in without an FF equivalent I.e. Morphit.
ReelBus doesn’t seem to have an especially direct equivalent, can anyone comment on FF options for tape simulation (probably Saturn? Maybe Timeless?) or even vs MixBox.
@MadGav Agreed, ReelBus and Morphit are both essentials. ReelBus, as it’s the best tape sim on the platform and Morphit because it’s the only technology of its kind on the platform (but Morhphit is outgunned on the desktop). I also think TB Reverb has unique qualities as does BitJuggler, and Barricade makes for a better track limiter/saturation tool than Pro-L (Pro-L is unbeatable for the master-buss or as as a traditional mastering chain tool).
I rate TB plugins highly but Fabfilter wouldn't be able to sustain its pricepoint on the desktop if it wasn't a proven leader. The only other desktop plugin vendor I rate as highly is Soundtoys.
Woohoo glad somebody came in to gush for the Fabs. I try to hold back my fanboy-ism these days, but they really are the best tools and effects I’ve ever used. Filters, saturation/distortion, delay (with chorus/flanger capabilities), and reverb (absolutely love Pro-R). Those are the only plugins I use for those effects and I wish they’d came along before I bought all the other stuff.
