Pre fader/Post fader…. Sends Post and Pre Fader, Darth Vader?????

Ok, so I’m an old dumb guitar player and now I have come across this…. So in AUM I never knew there was a choice for effects pre/post. Now in Loopy I see it staring me straight away. I guess in AUM or Cubasis I think I always just used pre fader. So now with all this magic that Loopy does, what should I be doing? Is there any good explanation of Pre/Post? What about with sends? Should you have it Pre/Post?

  • Specifically for reverb sends, I place them post fader, so the reverb level varies with the dry level. The send level determines the amount of reverb on this channel.

So curious do you have the wet dry set to 100% on the effect and then control that with just the send volume?

Exactly. That's how you create a reverb channel, 100% wet. The reverb fader controls the overall rvb level, and the send levels determine the amount of reverb applied to each instrument.

    Thanks!

  • You have the send idea correct. Prefader auxes are typically used for monitor mixes, where you don’t want the levels affected by the levels of the faders in your main mix.

  • Prefader is also good if you're using amp modelling for guitar etc. You want the full signal going into the modeller despite the mix level, otherwise the guitar tone will change with the volume, especially for overdriven tones.

  • In AUM, the pre/post fader setup is visualized with a connection line going from the fader into the fx chain. You can look at it like this: where the connection line from the fader meets the fx chain, that's where the fader will sit in the chain. Anything above it will be unaffected by the fader (because they're pre-fader) and anything below it will be affected by it (because they're post-fader).

As already mentioned, some effects have different results depending on signal level, anything related to dynamics processing, distortion or wave shaping. Also, any effects that have tails (delay, reverb) will also behave differently: if pre-fader, the fader will also affect the level of the tails, but having it post-fader allows you to abruptly mute or lower the volume of the channel but still hear the tail ring out.
