Basic audio/midi interface for usb-c iPad Pro suggestions please

Hello, I see that this question has been asked but my thread diving has not proved fruitful. I apologise in advance for creating a new thread but I am introducing a friend to iPad music and I don’t know what to suggest to him.
He has a 2019 12.9” usb-c iPad Pro and I need to find a basic audio/midi interface for him. The Anker power expand 6-in-1 connector looks good and I believe I will need to get him a powered usb hub.
Can anyone please suggest a simple, plug it in and it works, audio/midi interface please?
Thank you.

  • I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and it works great with my M1 iPad Pro, but no MIDI (I have a separate Nektar interface for that which works great). If I was buying an interface today, I'd strongly consider the Motu M4 which includes MIDI.

When you say "midi", I would assume you mean 5-pin midi, not USB. How many midi ports would you need? And audio, 2-in, 2-out would be enough, or more?

And I should mention that the Anker power expand 6-in-1 connector is a powered USB hub. All you would need if the USB ports are sufficient.

Thanks @mjm1138 having read your reply I have looked at the motu and it looks great. He might want the M2 for budget purposes and so I’ll read up on the differences. Thank you.

Thanks @uncledave i believe it is 5-pin midi, I’m going to see him tomorrow to inspect his gear to make sure. That’s great about the Anker providing power. He’s a guitarist with a midi keyboard and so I think one port would be enough.
    Thank you.

  • I have a MOTU M4 and a couple of the Behringer interfaces (UMC 204 and 404) that work well with my iPad Pro with USB-C. For the MOTU I can use a direct USB-C to USB-C cable and for the Behringers I use a direct USB-C to USB-B cable. The battery on the iPad is enough to last for long sessions for me without worry. If I need to go for longer or I'm starting off with a low battery I use the "USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter" from Apple to connect the Behringer interface. I assume that you could use a USB-A to USB-C connector to run the MOTU this way, but I haven't ever done that. The UMC 404HD can be run with external power too if you want to.

Basically, with the right set of dongles/hubs/cables any USB class compliant interface will work. I really like being able to connect directly from the iPad. The cable I use for the Behringer interfaces is this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082HQ3LP2.

  • Zoom U-24 is also worth considering.

It has bus, DC and battery power (so will also work great with an iPhone with the CCK).

It has 2-in 4 out audio and 5 pin DIN MIDI in and out

  • FWIW I’ve been eyeballing the Arturia MiniFuse 2. 2 ins 2 outs, USB C, USB hub with MIDI-over-USB, MIDI I/O for $150. The Universal Audio Volt line is comparable too (not sure if USB C though).

  • Motu M2/M4. The latency is amazing
