Using New Roland Aria Compact Boxes With iPad

I’m picking up the T8 beatbox and J6 chord synth tomorrow. Both are class compliant and can send audio over midi apparently, but Roland’s spec says you can’t use them with a USB hub and they must must be connected directly to USB C iPads with a USB C to C cable. Is it just me , or does that seem pretty useless, meaning I’ll have to just rely on my iPad’s built in speaker as there will be no option for connecting headphones or monitors ? Has anyone got their hands on these little machines yet ?

  • How did you get them so early? Everything I’ve seen still has them coming in weeks from now. May be too soon for a good answer unfortunately.

  • I think the problem is that iOS can only handle one audio interface at a time, and when you're connecting the device via usb-audio, it is acting as an audio interface. If you want audio from more than one into your iOS device you'll have to use a mixer or multi channel audio interface. I'm going to bet that you can plug the Arias into a USB hub and do USB midi with them just fine, but doing audio with more than one won't work due to iOS limitations.

This and as far as headphones and monitors go, you use the headphone out on the T8 or J6 for that.
