How old are your iPads

Hi everyone
Firstly I want to say how I like this community I have only been here for a few days and I feel it is a very nice and nonjudgemental place which is not typical in art and music communities online at least from what I experienced

I also was wondering if you all use the newest iPads or if there are people who make music just fine with older models
I have an iPad Pro from 2017 and in general it works just fine the only two weak spots are the battery life where I have to see if I find a powerful enough power bank because I actually like making music in the park which is not possible for me at the moment

And the only app that is not working on my iPad is Cubasis which crashes as soon as I load other synths into a track so I stopped using it also because I kept swearing so badly that my partner knocked on my door and asked if there is something wrong or if he should take away my iPad to keep me from throwing it out of the window
But I have a GarageBand audiobus and loopy which work totally fine so I am okay with that also every other app even CPU heavy synths/Instruments still work fine on my iPad

  • iPad Pro 2017 here too. Works perfectly. Still have 100Gb free space (had 512).

  • Another iPad Pro 2017 10.5 here. It still works fine for me in my main apps: Auria, Garageband, and NS2.

I’ll probably upgrade to the next gen iPad Pro whenever that comes out, maybe in the autumn.

My current iPad is 512gb and that for me is the minimum storage I can use, anything less ends up being a pain.

  • Just to add that a five year lifespan is pretty good, I got five years from my IPad Air 2 as well, pretty awesome value for money for a device I use every day for hours.

Absolutely. This is something like 0.30 $ per hour to compare with the 16$ I have paid for the last shitty movie I have watched at the cinema...

  • I use a normal Ipad, 2021 version (8th generation), 128GB, analogue headphone out socket. That one works flawless for me.

And I have an Air2 64GB, pretty old now, and that one feels slow and sluggish. Maybe because the SDD disk has been written too much? Or internet traffic gets heavier and heavier. I assume I can still run music apps on it, but I have no real need to do that.

And an Ipad first model, and that one is totally useless. I should give it to my kids so they can demolish it with a hammer and a hockey stick and slam it to pieces, to have some fun. Some old laptops died that way already.

Welcome! Great to have you here. :)

I currently have a 2017 12.9" iPad Pro that has slowly evolved into being my dedicated sheet music reader. I have a 2019 iPad Mini 5 I've produced a lot of music on, including a remix for a very popular Dance Music group called "Sash!".

I recently purchased a 12.9" M1 iPad Pro with 512gb internal storage to become my dedicated sheet music reader as well as to produce music on as my 2017 iPad Pro is becoming pretty long in the tooth and seems to be wearing out. My Mini, while it still works fine, is not enough screen space to realistically live produce/perform more complex Ambient pieces on (whether I use AUM or Loopy Pro).

And this community is wonderful. We're here to build each other up, not laugh at others' music, act hoity-toity, belittle someone for "not reading the manual", nor tear each other down. :) @Michael has made sure of that.

Based on your original post, I'd recommend a current gen iPad Pro. It's touted to have the best battery life for making music in the park. Downsides are that there's no headphone jack (you'd need a headphone adapter), and it's expensive af. However, it has a long battery life (🔋 instead of 🪫), comes with higher internal storage capacity options, is USB-C instead of lightning (which means you can plug in a compatible USB-C thumbdrive to offload files), and is genuinely a joy to use. :)

    Cheers and welcome aboard!

  • iPad Mini 3 (2019) .. works like a charm ..

  • 2017 basic ipad. No issues.

  • iPad Pro 9.7” 256GB from 2016 frozen on iOS13. Over 300 music making apps on it, all working perfectly.

Welcome to the best place on the internet! 🤗

  • ipad pro 10.5 2017, bought a returned/opened one for a good discount. Tempted by the new M1 Air models but don't have a real need for it at the moment, plus the headphone jack is super useful.

  • I would proffer the notion that people upgrade their iPads only slightly more often than they upgrade their telly

  • 9.7" iPad Pro, 256Gb, iOS 15.4.1 (2016)
    Air 3, 256Gb, iOS 15.4.1 (2019)

  • 2017 iPad Air with 128Gb(? - I think) that's showing its age
2019 iPad Air with 256Gb that's still going OK

I generally keep 2 iPads going: a newer one for music and various fun & creative things, plus an older one that's 95% used for work stuff (Outlook, Teams, Powerpoint etc.) and maybe 5% for music when it's all I have on hand. Separate devices let me keep my personal content well away from mandatory work horrors like Intune, Symantec Endpoint Protection, etc.

I'm just about to replace the 2017 Air with a current Air, which will then become my main music box and the 2019 will become the work box

  • I really like my iPad One... (btw the greatest typewriter of them all, so snappy)
And it still does iKoto, SamplR, the CMI, Mellotron, PPG Wavegenerator, Genome Midi, TB Midi Stuff (to name a few). B)

Atm I‘m on an Air-1 (IOS 12), scored for 50 bucks and consider it sufficient. Runs Shockwave and ID700 as newbies, the usual Midi from TC Data to Aphelian, AUM, etc.
(major studio re-arrangement still going on, so not much time for IOS anyway)

My iPad-2 and Air-2 are captured by the lady of the house o:)

  • Welcome aboard!

I’m on an iPad Air 2, which is from 2014 but I got it refurbished in 2017 if I recall correctly :) And I have to say it works pretty damn great for making music! The only things it struggles with is heavy browser use (causes battery drain) and multi-tasking (it doesn’t hold much in memory so some stuff gets reloaded every time I switch apps). But tbh those issues are only because I have the tendency to do everything on my iPad.

I can relate with Cubasis being a bit heavy, it does work though but quite sluggish. Not sure why, could be something in the code not being optimal for older devices but could just as well be due to the user/use-case. AUM and Loopy Pro work incredibly smooth and click better with me when it comes to workflow, also having the ability to idle auv3’s makes it super easy to manage DSP load :)

Oh Drambo works great as well, heck I could probably go on and on with naming apps that work well :P In my experience so far it’s been very very rare to stumble into big problems, gaps in my knowledge limit me more than the capability of my device ;)

  • 2020 Pro. I got it right when the 2021s came out, because I couldn’t stomach at the time paying several hundred extra for the fancy new display. My previous 2017 Pro still works fine , and can handle everything I want to do music-wise, but the battery is shot so it’s pretty much a desktop iPad for sketches since it has to stay plugged in. I try to keep the new Pro as clean as possible and let all my song ideas and snippets clutter up the older model til ideas coalesce and I start in earnest on a track that will be heard.

Having a full terabyte of storage on the new Pro is so freeing, though. 256 MBs can fill up reaaallll quick. Whereas now I’ve got a cool 900 gbs of free space.

  • 2020 Pro 12.9 inch...

I use a 2021 Pro 11" but my previous 2017 10.5" Pro was a far better mobile music device as it has a headphone jack. If I had to do a lot of commuting / traveling I would get the latest base model.

  • iPad Pro 2016, 9.7 used heavily until last year as my main iPad. Still works well. Has a lot of Lumafusion projects that I need to archive off.

iPad Air 2 works well but primarily storage / misc testing. Might trade this for M2 iPad Pro when it comes out, since it won't get any more updates but I might keep as a control surface / midi patch bay / dedicated device for Patch Base to use with hardware synths.

New main iPad: 2020 iPad Pro 11. Got 256gb and it made a huge difference but it'll likely fill up. USB-C is awesome because I can power a bunch of midi devices without a hub.

    iPad Pro M1 12.9" 2021 and a iPad Pro 10.5 2017(for the headphone connector)

    Thank you all
It’s cool to see I’m not the only one with an older model that works fine
I like the stability of the iPad my laptops never lasted that long every two years roundabout I had to get a new one now I’m sick of it and got myself a good old desktop PC where you can replace every single part of it

I only have an iPad with 64 gigs which I really regret and wish that there was a way for me to extend the storage space
that’s why I never store music or personal stuff on it because otherwise I wouldn’t have the space for all my music and art apps it’s a bit awkward because I have to either listen to music on my phone (Android) Where I have all my music stored on an SD card or on my PC which is not close to my bed and I love listening to music or audiobooks in bed

  • iPad Pro 9.7 “ 2015?
Like you the battery is worn out, but it works fine with latest iOS.
    No issues with Cubasis

I have had great value from this device , but it is time for a refresh.

  • 2021 iPad Pro here. I tend to upgrade each release cycle and sell my previous iPad, the difference in price is worth it for me to know I won’t have any issues when I sit down to write music.

  • 1st gen ipad pro 12.9. It still does everything I need.

  • edited June 2022

2nd gen Pro 12.9” and 2nd gen Air (9.7”). Also iPhone, which I do use for similar purposes at times, but isn’t an iPad so..

When there is a really good reason to buy something more recent, I probably will.

  • edited June 2022

FIRST gen iPad Pro 12.9” for me. I’ll keep this one until it croaks because of the headphone jack.

  • Pro 10.5 2017 for everyday use
Pro 2020 11 just for music

Both work great and can handle pretty much everything. The battery on the 10.5 is still going strong but will probably have to replace it in the next couple of years. I’m keeping it because of the headphone jack.

  • edited June 2022

iPad Air 4 here with 256 gigs, got it last year to replace an iPad 6th gen. Really happy with it. Lacks headphone jack but I use a dongle for headphones when playing around just using the iPad and a pair of cheap Sony DJ headphones. When recording more seriously I use an audio interface, Arturia Minifuse, with headphone out and cans from Audio Technica.

  • An air 1 and it’s brutal and I’m dying to get a new one so I don’t have to always use my phone for everything but I just can’t swing it for a newer one right now

  • iPad mini 5th Generation, so 2019. iOS 15.
