Tonestack is on sale : 75 % off - its an excellent guitar amps & fx app
Yonac Tonestack is on sale: 75 % off. It is an excellent guitar amps and effects app. And the Motherload (this is a in-app-purchase, a bundle with all amps & fx) has a reduction of 30%.

Comments
Any reason to buy this if I've got jamup and bias?
because MIDI. Every single Tonestack parameter can be controlled by MIDI.
There are other threads comparing all the fx/amp sims, personally I have set aside JamUp since Tonestack came out. For the sale price, ToneStack will give you a whole lot of effects at very low cost.
Also this may be a welcome fix, from the update description:
@Marcel Two reasons: A) I have all of the sims (I'm not a guitarist, my name is Johnny; I'm an appaholic) and I think Tonestack is superb (not a great reason) and
@Flo26 says so and he CAN play (a great reason).
Do you "need" it? No. If you've even asked that question, then you're probably not the type of person who has an interest in collecting as many different amps and effects as possible, even if you are looking at two different versions of the same amp in different apps, to see which you like better. JamUp is also a universal app, and it has about everything need to approximate any type of guitar sound you could want - from clean jazz and blues, to crunch rock, to vintage fuzz, to modern metal.
That being said, I have ToneStack with the MotherLoad package, and I do like it quite a bit. I guess technically JamUpXT has "more" amps available if you are invested in the IAP's. And with BIAS integration, the amount of amps you could get or make is basically infinite. That being said, I don't find myself using the BIAS amps in clear favor over the other apps. If I load up the BIAS app and play them in there, yes, I can hear that they sound more "tube-like" and realistic. But they sound a little different once imported into JamUp, and so many of the user-created BIAS ones are ridiculously extreme in output, gain, etc.
If you are a big fan of effects, especially things like delay, modulation, and channel splitting, I think ToneStack handles this better than JamUp. It's an impressive collection of "stuff".
Tonally, I prefer the "Fender"-style amps in ToneStack over the ones in JamUp. JamUp certainly has the edge with the higher gain options. But again, an A-to-B comparison between modeling apps is impossible because there are so many different amps and settings.
The change log for this 1.4 update looks interesting. I haven't used the the inSTUDIO 8-track (I wouldn't even have it unless it came with Motherload), but the concept of recording and then applying pedal effects as "plugins" for reamping is pretty cool. And the one about improving distortion/OD/fuzz sounds obviously got my attention, too. I've been satisfied with the amount of work Yonac continues to put into this app - that was a concern some people had when it was released.
Lots of AWESOME new features for the inStudio 8 track recorder:
You can now use up to four FX for each track as inserts!
Use inserts to add FX during mixing, or to conveniently and non-destructively re-amp your existing tracks
You can use any unlocked effect, amp or cabinet in ToneStack as an insert
The user friendly UI allows you to easily add, reorder and remove inserts: and to view an effect's controls, just double tap its box on inStudio
inStudio also introduces two sends, each with its own inserts, as well a separate master output with its own inserts group. Each track comes with variable Send 1 and Send 2 levels
In addition, unlocking OnStage gives you two exclusive production-minded FX: Studio EQ, a high quality 5-band stereo equalizer, and Studio Compressor, a classic stereo dynamic compressor.
OnStage is revamped: you can now create performance groups to organize your existing presets into folders for different situations. Each performance group gives you 128 pads to link your presets. In addition, you can reorder presets and more!
You can now control OnStage via MIDI! Just go to Settings -> MIDI and specify whether you want MIDI program changes to be routed to OnStage or to the Preset Manager
ALL distortions, fuzzes and overdrives have been gone over and fine-tuned. The lows/mids response is way more natural and the tones are even ballsier and more realistic.
Implemented 100% silent preset switching
Fully updated for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
Many other improvements
Brilliant post.
Tonestack is far less CPU consuming than Bias.
In other words: Tonestack needs far less memory than Bias needs.
I think it's worth every penny spent!
The mother ship is so amazing and gives you everything you'll ever need. I'm a guitar player and for the price of a quality cable you are getting so much!
How often is the motherload on sale?
Not sure i can spend the $$ right now.
This too. In fact, that's one of the main reasons I tend to use some guitar apps over other ones.
Want to be clear in my post above - his question was basically "do I need this if I already have JamUp and BIAS?" From a feature standpoint, the answer is probably no. But while the app + motherload is "expensive" in app terms, it remains incredibly cheap compared to hardware guitar stuff. As long as the app looks to be well-made, I'm interested in new guitar sounds and FX on iOS. The only time I've really been bitten by that is AmpONE, which isn't "bad", but is pretty limited and runs like garbage on my older iPad. Still, a $10 sunk cost isn't a big deal in terms of the value I've gotten out of the other purchases.
It's on sale a fair amount. I think I paid the $50 for it at release, and that was pretty fair for what I've gotten out of it. But I recall seeing it go on sale a bunch of times (including once in the $20-range, I think) and I was like "already!?" But oh well. There will be future sales.
Cool thanks storm
Can somebody comment on the quality of the Brandenburg gate effect? I've just got the basic TS and one custom pack IAP... so only have the basic NoiseX noise gate and it's terrible!!! Can't use any distortion effects in TS... So I put Ampkit in AB input and use it's noise gate and run TS in the FX slot - this works ok - but if somebody can tell me that the Brandenburgh gate works well I'll get that probably. (or the new Aufx app!)
Does the sale extend to the in-app purchases? It doesn't look like it.
hmmm.. I can't get any of the Noise gates to work very well in TS. Or the distortions for that matter. I'm hoping this new update fixes/cures all that. The effects are really really good in TS. The distortions really didn't sound all that good in TS IMHO. That's why I've always used JamUp pro for all my distortions. But, it didn't really matter that the distortions were not good in TS, because all I could get with high gain, and heavy distortions was a bunch of nose, screeching. I finally did get a few Metal presets saved, but the noise gates, even though they seemed to work ok, sounded unnatural, and clipped/or cut off the guitar signal prematurely when striking a chord.
I am hopeful that this gets straightened out in the new update.
I've got Tonestack, Jam-up and Ampkit on my iPad air latest IOS and Tonestack is the only one to work dependably in AB. The other two suffer a significant drop in level eventually. It's like the "use measurement mode" stops working after a minute or two. Tonestack stays right on the level.
Good words Flo. Just an idea (i think your knowledge of it is better than mine): is the volume knob of the guitar not also an important factor in finding a sweet spot. It is with finding the right amount of distortion, but I dont know if it is a factor in handling noise.
Amen!
Good insight.
In other news, I was in a punk band called Guitar Knob for about three weeks at the end of 1977. We were absolutely terrible.
Finding the source of any noise is important too- all a gate does is cut it during non playing passages, but the noise is still very evident to me during the playing. Good grounding and good shielding are important.
thanks guys - I'm using an Ampkit adapter for my guitar that plugs into the headphone jack ... I think that's probably causing most of the noise issues. I think it's time to upgrade to an Apogee Jam or iRig HD!
Any headphone jack adapter is not suitable for anything requiring good sound, no matter what the companies who make them say. You definitely want a digital interface for anything serious. The headphone adapters are convenient to keep in a gig bag for quick practice, learning tunes. Etc if you have a bigger interface, but the jam or irig HD will do a good job for you. I love my apogee one for recording.
I have both (really all three, JamUp, BIAS, and ToneStack) with all the IAPs and while I use BIAS 75% of the time there are tones in TS I can't come close to JamUp/BIAS. I prefer straight tube sounding/behaving amps, and IMHO BIAS does that the best on the iPad. I still use TS for some things. Because of what I play, I would not say I need TS, but I think everyone has different preferences here so it really depends on what type of tones you like. I also prefer the clean tones from AmpKIt over ToneStack so AmpKit is currently my 2nd most used amp sim, bit that may change as I use ToneStack more, TS is pretty new and I have been using AmpKit for years.
If I did not already have TS I'd still buy it based on my experience with it and it was the first iPad guitar amp sim to offer reasonably priced all you can eat pricing that changed the pricing in the other apps. I support them just for that, but I think they are still a great value.
Love it when the guitar people come out of the woodworks on AudioBus Forum - great stuff in this thread. Absolutely agree with needing a digital interface. I attempted iOS music with a JamUp plug 2 or 3 years ago, it was so noisy I was like "to heck with this!" The interface makes a huge difference.
And I also agree that the noise control on ToneStack could use some refinement. Not a huge concern for me though since I don't play a lot of gainy stuff.
I used to prefer BIAS for clean tones, but lately I have drifted over to TS for those. For effects TS is head and shoulders over all of the competition IMO, and I also have never had any noise issues with it, but I play humbuckers through a digital interface, so that may well be partly why.
I personally think Jamup has been upstaged in the last 12 months by the newer apps (Tonestack, Flying Haggis and BIAS), I'll probably end up deleting it as I never use it any more, despite having invested in quite a few IAPs. I've never liked Ampkit, so there is obviously a lot of subjective personal opinion involved in these decisions.
With a traditional guitarist background in 60s bands I haven't needed to experiment too much beyond the basics but I have kept with Jamup from the start - mainly like the presets library where I can select the sound and then fine tune. I have tried ToneStack which I think is the best and has the most extensive effects but I barely scratch the surface really. So, for my needs I swap between JamuP and increasingly using Flying Haggis (no frills but really good basics and simple to use ). Line 6 Pod has a great number of presets but the effects are a bit lightweight for me by comparison.
I agree with no-noise gate policy as a general rule but if there's a lot of buzz because of the electrical system in your house not being properly grounded and your neighbour is a DIY lover or has OCD noise gate might be the only option.
Edit: I agree though, not great for sustained sounds, delays etc.
I can't see anywhere the bundled gear without the iaps . I have the free version which is basic but I like the sound
