Anyone using MIDI controllers with Gadget?

What are you using and how are you mapping them?

Came across this video of it being used with NanoKontrol:

  • I used mpk225, but keys only

I use it with apps like steppolyarp, genome, FiddleWax pro and fingertip midi. Works a treat (apart from not liking it when you change patterns in StepPolyArp) as software midi controllers.

I've also used it with my Korg nanopad (mapping the x/y pad for effects and the pads for drums).

Also used it with my old korg micro kontrol.

Not had any problems. The new 'midi learn' is great.

Hit the function button on any Gadget synth then this opens up the midi learn on the bottom right hand side.

  • It think something with endless encoders instead of fixed knobs like on nanokontrol would work better especially for Gadget where you're switching between many gadgets. Beatstep looks like a fun one.

  • I have a beatstep and a qunexus. I use the beatstep a lot more for the knobs. Tons of fun too.

  • I use the Triton taktile 49-key
It's great for Gadget, and should be, as its recently made by Korg.
I also use my M-Audio Keystation PRO 88-key.. Its nice to have all the knobs and faders, and you can assign the buttons to act as Note On triggers for pads. This keyboard is very customizable.

  • Akai MPK Mini Mk2 is a lot of fun.

Yeah, that's what I use. I haven't done it "often", but for as great as the piano roll grid in Gadget is, the keyboards kind of suck (IMO). It's nice to have even a 25-key mini as an option for getting notes in there, and then you can tweak it with the grid.

  • Those of you using controllers with fixed knobs (like on MPK Mini) and sliders, do you find pickup/takeover to be an issue when switching between different gadgets?

I'm also on the market for a Gadget controller and i'm wondering the same.

Non endless encoders doesn't sound really practical.

  • I bought an old Korg MicroKontrol on eBay

    http://www.vintagesynth.com/korg/microkontrol.php

and it works quite well with Gadget on the rare occasions i've set it up (given it's quite big/heavy and not very 'mobile'). It has sliders and rotary controls (which I believe are endless but you'd need to check).

There are more modern versions of this "keyboard plus lots of knobs and pads" thing around now though, i'm sure.

  • Novation X station is great with gadget. I am able to save setup as a template along with any audio inputs I want .
Just not sure yet whether Gadget automatically saves my midi cc assignments for each synth or if there is something I need to do to save them.
    Anyone know ?

  • As far as I've worked out, each time you create a new gadget (let's say 'Dublin') in a song it starts with the default factory ccs.

You can remap the ccs in this gadget and it will save their mappings when you save the song and forever retain them with the song.

But if you create a second instance of Dublin it will have factory ccs.

I disagree about the Taktile, I have the non-triton one, and not event the transport buttons work in Gadget. Sure the knobs work but so would any other controller. Also midi-sync does not work, so the arpeggiator in Taktile is useless. Very disappointed since, as you say - it's made by Korg.

Have you tried this with a second iDevice using Apollo MIDI?

  • @solador78

Yep - i've done that with Thumbjam and MidiMe. (iphone > Apollo MIDI > ipad > Gadget) - works fine once you have it set up.

But does the transport buttons works with other controllers? I can't find any settings for those from Gadget, same for the faders, pan and all from the mixer... It seems only the gadgets knobs are assignable from the gadgets themselves.

My case: I'm looking for a relatively compact controller, i just want a better way to manipulate the tiny knobs & faders for the automations. I won't say no to a keyboard but it's not my priority.

So right now i'm considering the Beatstep (because of its endless encoders, it doesn't have faders tho) and configure it with the Gadget's CCs, that way i will not have to remap from Gadget itself.

But i'm still not sure it is the best strategy nor the best controller for the job, i wanna go the minimalistic way and not start to collect gears again...

Please continue sharing your experiences with Gadget and your controllers, that has been very helpful already :)

@Hikito I totally hear you. I've also been looking for a nice small solution for controlling ccs in gadget.

I wish Korg made a new nano2 which had the xy pad of the nanopad (so useful) but with endless knobs and some sliders instead of drum pads.

One alternative you might want to consider to a hardware controller is a second iPad or iPhone running something like midi-designer with a template you've created which is prenapped to the different ccs of the different gadgets. Then use Appollo midi over blue tooth or just iOS midi over Bluetooth if that works.

(Or there was an interesting device advertised on here recently that seemed to allow you to connect via a single cable - iPhone to iPad).

It's something I've done a bit of. I've started a midi designer template for doing some crazy stuff with Bilbao and Abu pitches and also the start/stop sample positions and effects in Bilbao. Stuff you could never really do 'live' on hardware or with all the tiny gadget interfaces because I'm controlling 16 different pitch ccs at the same time. Works nicely though. So don't rule out a 'iPhone' controller approach.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 I must admit i totally overlooked that (pretty smart) approach.

Just did a quick test with Apollo + Lemur from the iPhone and it seemed to work well.

Will have to test and study this method in depth, great tip Matt, thanks a lot!

  • @Hikito I have not tested with other controllers, I bought Taktile specifically for Gadget, thinking it would work well since it's made by KORG and marketed together with Gadget.

They have presets for Gadget, so the knobs and faders are pre-assigned, and there are presets for most of Gadgets instruments, but I find it easier just to use Gadgets MIDI-learn function rather than trying to remember assignment for each instrument ;-)

I hope they update Gadget to take advantage of MIDI-sync and transport controls, so far Taktile doesn't add much, except being a nice controller (good keys and such).

Beatstep doesn't always pick up correctly, at least with Sunrizer. Akai mpk mini knobs didn't bother me much but I can see it being a problem.

  • @Hikito - if you go down the "iPhone as a midi-controller route" then you might be interested in the new cable in this thread:

    http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/112813/#Comment_112813

The point being, assuming it works - which I can't vouch for - you wouldn't need to mess around with setting up bluetooth connections - you could just plug in your iphone to your ipad and get busy with tweaking those ccs.

I'm tempted/curious - but i'm not sure about parting with the money TBH :).

  • Cool. Are you guys arranging whole songs in Gadget or dumping the tracks somewhere else?

  • Arranging whole tracks in Gadget for me...

Although i've just tried my first "export some Gadget tracks to Auria and add some other stuff" and that works well too.

  • edited February 2015

@solador78 Export from The Gadg to Auria works well. I am grateful for the individual track capability. Actually I don't think about it as exporting into Auria as much as transferring The Gadg into the Fabfilter Laundry of Loveliness.

    But that's just me.

  • What are your favourite gadgets @JohnnyGoodyear? I didn't think you used it that much?

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 I didn't so much, but as soon as I got my hands on Salzburg the whole app got easier, or worth the fiddling, which was a good lesson; aesthetic satisfaction being the force-multiplier of motivation (for me anyway).

Add Bilbao into the mix (five seconds be damned) and then the realization that if I used the piano roll to generate or write fragments that can then be cleanly taken elsewhere....well, it's too good a tool to be left in the box untouched.

As for other specific gadgets, I like things from Chiangmai, Helsinki and Marseille, and that will reveal that I am not a 'dance' guy at heart, but I am interested in co-opting beats for my own purpose (aren't we all?) and so the further I get beyond the cliches of the ear in some of the others I find I can make almost anything work for me.

Especially once I wheel in the Fabfilters at the other end or even, sometimes, use pieces prepared in Gadget, for special sauce use in, say, Beathawk or Novation....

  • Interesting.

So far i've not gone to iOS8 - so even though I own the thing - I've not used Salzburg/Module etc...

I'd like to, but i'm too worried by talk of Gadget glitching on iOS8 with more than 8 or so tracks.

How do you find it - or so you rarely go to that many tracks with a full production Gadget?

I ask mainly because if I went to iOS 8 we'd have identical set-ups.

  • edited February 2015

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 Well, I guess one machine's never exactly like another, but I've had no real problems apart from issues keeping Gadget open when Auria is (seems OK if Gadget is opened first). Happy to run a test for you, just tell me what you'd like to simulate. Can't imagine having The Gadg without the Special Salz :)

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 that cable looks interesting but i'm no sure it is more convenient than launching Apollo on both devices ^^

    --

I'm running Gadget & Module (and all their IAP) on an iPad Air 2 (iOS 8.1.3), i'm not feeling limited by the tracks so far (note that i tend to keep it simple, i only have a couple of projects with 8+ tracks and it's fine).

But, i have noticed imported gadgets from Module can randomly crash Gadget itself. Usually while switching the preset or while playing with the knobs, it's not that often but it happens, i took the habit to save a lot when i use them.

Also, those Module gadgets are a bit lower in volume here compared to the native gadgets, wondering if this is normal.
