I’d recommend getting a Mac mini immediately. Why waste any more time with Windows? But seriously, Windows is terrible.
I’m with you and I’m by no means an Apple fanboy.
And that’s not the only reason to get a Mac mini. Windows can be run in emulation (if really necessary) on a Mac and it runs better on a Mac than on a Windows-only computer.
Maybe someone can help me. I tried so many things already.
My monitor is flickering with Windows 10 and 11.
My monitor is not flickering in Linux.
Each time I start my computer (or wake-up after sleep), the monitor starts flickering.
The only thing that works, is that I unplug the HDMI and power chord behing the monitor, wait 15 seconds, and plug it again.
My monitor will be good until I close my computer.
It may seems like a defective monitor, but the monitor works great in Linux.
Obviously, my HDMI cable is new, my monitor is plug direct in the wall ( I tried many different plug), my drivers are up to date, my graphic card is new (same thing happen with the onboard graphic card).
Any idea?
Have you checked with multiple refresh rates? 60Hz, 75Hz, 100Hz etc?
No.
But i heard that it's important to always have the higher refresh rates and I'm always at the top.
I only have 3 option: 60Hz, 59,4Hz and 50Hz.
I was always at 60.
Maybe a lower refresh rates will help me? I can try. Thanks
I will try 59,4 for 1 day and update you.
I've had issues with 'cheap' HDMI-Cables that do no have enough bandwidth that can cause flickering...
60Hz should be stable with correct cable.
What resolution are you running? 4K or 1920x1080?
1920x1080
My HDMI cable is new, I tried 2 and both do the same thing.
59,4Hz is not working.
I did a couple of tests, and the solution is always the same.
When my monitor is flickering, I remove the power adapter behind the monitor, wait 15 seconds, plug it again and boom, it works until I close the monitor.
Oh, I found something interresting.
In Windows, I can only select 50Hz, 59.4Hz or 60Hz.
But I have look into my monitor setting, and my monitor setting told me that my HDMI is 67.5Hz and the recommanded setting is 60Hz.
Not sure how it is possible.
Another thing worth trying is to reset all the settings on the monitor if you haven't done that already?
(Ie. turn off the computer, reset the monitor settings and restart the computer).
Other quite obvious things to try are to 'un install' the monitor (add/remove devices) restart the computer and re-install it.
Or create a new user account with fresh-settings and see if it behaves the same...
Hope you'll get it to work
I will try this. Thank you for you help. I will update this thread if it's work for the future person with my exact same problem as a reference.
I found a solution. I bought an expensive HDMI cable and bam, no more problem. I tried 2 "new" but cheap HDMI cable and the problem was there, but now, with my expensive cable, I'm ok.
I learned something because I always thought expensive HDMI cable were useless.
I got a top of the line ThinkPad X-1 for Christmas with 11, no problems yet. Doesn’t mean I actually like Windows 11 over 10 though.
It’s still surprising that Linux works fine. It certainly could be the cable, and possibility it’s the combination of the cheap cable and the driver in Windows.
Still, if you have it working now hopefully that’s an end to it.
Yep, I was confused because I tried 2 cables and Linux was perfect. So in my head, it was unlikely that 2 cables were defect while in mint condition and that my monitor works perfectly with Linux.
But yeah, I'm 99% sure it was the cable (if things remains good like now).
I also thought it was the capacitor, but the problem was always at the start of Windows. A friend of mine told me that bad capacitor will annoy you in all time, not just when you start your computer.
Windows 11 is a test bed for Microsoft. Plus it’s on the traditional down cycle of good Windows releases. I will wait for windows 12 / CorePC instead.
2 weeks later, same problem. I bought a new monitor and it solved my problem.
My monitor is 75hertz but when I choose this option, it says that the optimal setting is 60hertz.
Not sure what to choose. Both option works fine
Considering the ubiquity of security holes in Windows upgrading often seems to make a lot of sense.
It absolutely screwed up my daughter’s laptop when she first installed it as it would crash daily. After a few weeks of patches it improved though and seemed no different from Windows 10 in general. I haven’t used it as my corporate work laptop is still on 10 (it generally takes the company a couple of years to test and certify major versions of Windows).
Now instead of talking about upgrading her Windows laptop like she used to, she asks me to get a new MacBook so she can take my existing one…
No OS is perfect, and upgrading experience depends on your hardware quality/age and the amount of installed software on your win 10, I think it's been a difficult transition for some.
The best way is to do it is usually a fresh install I think, I have been avoiding this on my desktop but I upgraded my laptop.
But overall 11 is a better experience with some good improvements over 10 so I'm looking forward to 12.
Smart kid. She knows Dad won't be able to resist that temptation. Asking right around Christmas time too.
We dads are so outclassed by our daughters it isn't even close to fair. Mine was smarter than me before she was even two years old.
I was’t planning on getting one yet, but she knows that it got the ball rolling in my head.
That's right, keep telling yourself you're being rational about it. But you know you'll cave.
Token resistance is always a good idea though.
