MidiBand/Korg/Yamaha/Roland/Chordbot/Fiddlewax Pro Music Arranger App. for IOS....

I wonder how many of you guys out there come from a background of using Arranger Keyboards/Synth Workstations.
I really enjoyed using my old Korg i30 Interactive Arranger Keyboard. They've come a long way now with amazing offerings from Korg PA series, Yamaha Tyros, and Roland offerings. These workstations allow you to lay the foundation to a song in mere minutes and usually jumpstart the inspiration for new material by playing with the built in backing instruments.

Now, my call is to all those developers out there that could design something similar. I know it is possible to make. For example, Fiddlewax Pro has almost the UI for something like this to work. It doesn't really need to have a strong soundset as one could always midi out to Roland Sound Canvas and use that as a great sound module. But to have the ability to have a built in backing band of at least 8 midi tracks, it would be so awesome as an inspirational and compositional tool. For example, on the PC there is a program called OMB One Man Band by Jos Maas that turns any keyboard or virtual keyboard into an Arranger Workstation. I have it and really wish it could exist on the IOS platform as there a thousands of free Yamaha Midi Styles for it.

Any ideas or advice as to whether this is something that can be developed someday?

PS
Updated title to include MidiBand...it works great!!!
I found my answer thanks to BiancaNeve!

  • I have been hoping and inquiring but nothing really yet. There must be something we do not understand as to why this has not been done yet as I am sure it would be popular.

  • Wow.. FiddleWax looks really good. Anyone using it?

  • I am, but I see Fiddlewax Pro having a great Arranger future if Adam would take on the project. I would do it if I had the programming know- how.
But being that Adam from Fiddlewax Pro is also a musician, it would make it that much easier. I would gladly pay for such an app. Then developers can sell Style packs to support further updates.
This can spread be done in a way,by connecting a laptop with One Man Band and sending the midi out to the iPad, but it is cumbersome. An IOS solution would be better to make it super portable.
CHORDBOT sort of does this already but it doesn't do real time chord recognition. So you have to put in the chords manually.
I'd love to see Fiddlewax Pro, do chord recognition as it automatically generates backing tracks for Bass, Drums, etc...

  • Is Yamaha Mobile Music Sequencer the kind of thing you want?
    https://appsto.re/gb/DFx0H.i

  • No we are talking arranger functions. Not sequencing although a good arranger does both.

A workstation does not have an arranger. It is a synth /studio with midi and sometimes audio sequencing as well, Korg M3'M50 and for audio as well think Kronos. I believe some of the more advanced arrangers are blurring the lines between workstation and arranger more and more. When we talk of an arranger it has to do with having a style that will change chords and scales depending on what key or chord you play. Like the Korg PA series or Yamaha psr .

  • The YMS would also be something Yamaha could work on but it doesn't generate backing tracks as you hold chords. YouTube Yamaha Tyros or Korg Arranger workstations and you will get an idea of what I mean. These by no means are cheap. These workstations run for like 2k so having an app like the One Man Band by Jos Maas on the iPad would be so amazing for portability and composing.

The 600-1200 range from both Yamaha and Korg do very well also. Yamaha psr 750 around 1200 bucks. Korg pa600 for $900.00 but the point being is a nice arranger on iOS should be very possible I would think.

  • If the developer for Chordbot would add real time chord recognition, that would be a step closer. Then we could midi out to Roland sound canvas and imagine?

  • MidiBand by Kateryna Sharayeva ?
    https://appsto.re/gb/8DBSO.i

  • WOW!!!! BiancaNeve!
That should work. I will get it and try it with BS16i and GM Soundfonts. I have hundreds of .sty files. Wow! Thanks!

  • Free version worked with BS16i. Will try full version layer to see if it works with audioshare if not will have to use ifunbox.

  • Sounds kinda like Sampletank is almost what you're thinking about, but with a more intelligent groove/loop function. If I understand correctly.

  • Just looked at MidiBand. Yup I misunderstood. Not sure what an sty file is though. Nice interface too.

  • A .sty is a file that has all the information self contained with various midi files that loop and have up to 8 sections with up to 16 instruments playing back the pre recorded midi loops. Its so cool cause itd like having virtual band members playing along with you. As you change chords in real time so do they. It is amazing that I found this Midiband App. I sent a message to the developer to visit us here. I think this app has a great future. Especially for us musicians that barely have time to get in the studio to record. We use our iPad on work breaks, lunch breaks, and having the ability to use thousands of free .sty styles on the web will help to make the flesh and bones of songs in minutes instead of days.

  • Have you tried the web download I wish there were some tutorials for this . So when I choose bs-16i for midi will it auto set up for the style?

  • I was able to download some .sty files at the link below and they downloaded and played in MidiBand as expected. Some of the links are dead though.

  • Has anyone seen any examples of what this 'Midi Band' app can do?
It seems it could be a good companion app for the iOS Sound Canvas...

  • Yeah I used the built in style in the free version of Midiband. When you hit play, the sound output from BS16i starts. It actually did autosetup, what's cool is that the included GM sounfont sounds pretty good.

  • @!Samu - I haven't tried it with SC yet. I'll give that a spin this evening, but it worked very well with bs-16i, so I think it should be fine with SC.

  • Thanks guys!
Just came back from getting iTunes gift card on special at Target by the way.
I have tons of free .sty files. Will save to my dropbox to share.
Some I I recall need tweaking but most worked great.
I'm gonna get SC and Midiband Pro.
I'm so excited as I have been waiting for such an app for so long.
Imagine making songs with this app in no time. At least to get you to jam to a backing virtual band playing all in perfect timing. What's cool is that the output of SC can be recorded in your DAW. I wonder if there's a way to output midi into Cubasis for further editing.

  • Oh how I wish MidiBand had better selection for Midi Input & Output and 'Background Support'.

All playback stops when switching apps. MidiBand would also benefit from having a 'Virtual Output' that could be selected in the app producing the sounds. This would be useful so for example SoundCavas could listen to the 'Virtual Output' from MidiBand and this way ignore the input from controller attached to the iPad that is mostly needed to well control MidiBand.

The App auto connects to available devices and plays back nicely with iOS SoundCanvas :)
The played notes changing the chords get passed thru to and played back in the app producing the output which is not a desired behaviour as the keys are ment to be used to modify the 'style' sent to the playback app...

Also Midiband 'crahses' when trying to download additional styles. Maybe the web-site is down and the app has no error checking?

Midiband one-of-a-kind app on iOS and i hope the developer will keep updating and making it play nicely...

  • I tried to open the menu by clicking the keys but it doesn't work, it only flickers. Will connect midi keyboard and see if that fixes it.

Is there a way to turn off the internal player of SC and have it only respond to external midi notes?

  • edited March 2015

    @Musikman4Christ

iOS Soundcanvas responds to what ever comes in from selected the 'Midi Inputs Ports' meaning if MidiBand had a 'Virtual Output' it could be selected and Soundcanvas would ignore the notes coming in from the controller...

Over all I'm happy with SoundCanvas iOS, works nicely with AudioMux/MidiMux (For Computer use) and also nicely with Cubasis (IAA Generator can be used to record the output into Cubasis AudioTrack, use regular Midi-Tracks to output data to the virtual input of the SoundCanvas).

  • Samu when you touch the little keyboard next to the 1 in the home page, are you getting anything?

  • I'm seeing the same as you MM4C...just a flickering.

Found a bunch of free styles guys! I loaded some from the Yamaha PSR 620 saved them to AudioShare and opened in MidiBand. Works perfectlyl! using BS16i soundfont player.

Found the main developers website. In one of the respinses he says there's a huge overhaul coming.

  • Pressing the 'Keyboard' icon just makes the screen flash for me, no way to do anything...

Glad to hear the app is not abandoned by the developer :)

  • Samu, Musikman4Christ: IMHO you've missed the best feature of MidiBand: ability to load any .mid file, not just .sty file from Yamaha. Since .mid files have no predefined sections, you have to do a bit more work in this case: playback the file once and click section buttons at the spots you like. But once you do, if the midi file was good quality, you can play the accompaniment back and sound almost like the original artist.
