Korg Gadget Question
Hello, Sorry if this is the wrong board to ask this but Korg doesn't have one and I know many of folks in here use Korg gadget.
With that said my question is, is it possible to copy notes. I don't mean from one bar to another but I mean selecting a few notes and then copying them to make more of them on the piano roll with in the same key. I know beatmaker 2 has that in it's piano roll and most do. I hope I being clear enough when asking this.
Comments
Do you mean doubling notes to make chords out of it? Can't find such an option in Gadget, but don't know four sure.
Well I guess doubling. I guess a button that would take a note you select and make another one a notch ahead of it on the piano roll. A copy of you will. Which could come in useful for doubling hi-hats or making copies of chords to move the same notes down a beat if you wanted too but simpler than dawning them in manually. If they don't have this than they need too because that sort of thing is elementary for most apps lol.
I took a look into Gagdet and it seems the only copy-function needs to have the destination to be another bar than the source. But for typical grid-sizes like 16 or 32 it should be not that a pain to apply doubling by hand. But you're right - it would be a nice addition.
As long as your notes are quantized - if not it could get fiddly.
There is a synth called "Marseille", which allows to play in whole cords with one key. Maybe it could be used "off label" by altering the gadget afterwards. But this seems to be not very straightforward to me.
This limited copy and paste is one of the things that has put me off Gadget in the past.
What I would do, is to copy the notes to another bar, move them to my likings and copy them again to the "main-bar".
If you are in the note editor, and use the select tool, and draw a box around notes to select, and press the function key in the lower right corner, then a bunch of function boxes pop up, and one of the buttons is 'copy', and it's grayed out. Actually none of the buttons seem to work, 'clear note' has no effect. Did they forget something?...
"Copy" applies only to complete bars, So you have to have at least 2 bars to make use of it.
So my suggestion for copying notes to a temp-bar and copying back, afterwards would not work, because of this. Copying would overwrite the original bar.
I discovered that last night, really annoying. I had to copy the whole thing then remove the notes I didn't want.
i hope we get a juicy Gadget update to complement the long awaited iOS 8.3 update.....maybe a Chromatic sampler and triggering of individual clips....and maybe a sprinkling of audio tracks...oh wait and a whole Gadget FX suite....
if all the above hit at once....how good would that be
No, not possible at this time! Not the way you/we would like, anyway!
I'm still enjoying being able to use more than 4 tracks, I don't think I could cope with any more excitement yet.
If you want to double a bar, like up or down an octave, you can temporarily add a second bar, function copy over the first bar, select and transpose notes up or down, then finally drag them back to the first bar. Not ideal, but sometimes it's faster.
Wow, this sucks but thank you all for your responses. I guess I'll just have to try and record everything via midi keys and try my best to avoid these situations which sucks but I'll have to deal with it or just use Beatmaker2 lol.
I think what @solador78 said, is the best bet for a workaround - so it's possible, however with some quirks.
The workaround is good. It is how I do it, but I'm just trying to answer the question to how it was asked.
Korg should get a move on with an update.. They know what we need/want!
Gadget is really a lot of fun. The more I use it, the more I think that limited functions can be a blessing.
Gadget is Great!
So immediate!
One thing I really miss in Gadget is numerical values when editing/drawing controller data that is pretty critical when drawing automatisation to tune sounds in Amsterdam, Abu Dhabi, Bilbao and London etc.
Also editing of note velocities could be made more 'clear' especially when there are multiple notes on a step, what about tapping a note/selection of notes to highlight velocities, editing should only be applied to selected notes, not all notes because that is what happens if 'dragging the finger' across the step it changes all notes velocities.
It's next to impossible to do a 'velocity ramp' on a drum in London if there are other drums on the track, only way to cure it is to bring up another track with London with only one drum
Also i wish the 'mixer' would get an automatisation editor just like all the instruments have.
This is a pain. I end-up having to delete and add back whatever step I want to adjust so that it's on top of the pile.
I've moved on to using 3-6 instances of Bilbao, with 2-3 tracks in each, so that I can bus mute groups one at a time.
Agree with this, especially because the modulation of velocities can sound so good in Gadget and really helps with the de-mechanization of the overall sound (but can be hard to fine-tune as noted).
I believe I'm echoing what's already been stated in this thread but just in case I'm missing something:
When I have a beat running in London it seems like all effect assignment controls default to the kick(?)
Velocities clearly display for all hits (on top of each other but accessible with some wiggling) but aside from that I'm at a loss how to target a specific other drum hit to assign (for example a Reverse on a single snare hit.)
As a work-around I tapped the Reverse button on and off while in Record and that automation displayed but as soon as I did anything else I could never find my way back to that automation displaying.
The manual was surprisingly brief on this entire topic -
Any insight would be much appreciated.
It defaults to the last part that you touched, so you can delete and add back a hi-hat in part #5 if you want to mess with that part's velocity. For all other parameters, they're sorted on the left side with the part # first (i.e. 1 Level, 1 Pan, etc.).
Just read through this thread. I have to say that gadget is my favourite music creation tool at the moment, despite having Logic Pro x running on a MacBook Pro. If Korg sorted out some of these obvious issues this app could be a game changer. It sounds superb to my ears and a little tweaking goes a long way. If they stay on top of updates and add new useable gadgets I will continue to throw money at it.
@solador78 many thanks - the answer was right in front of me: scroll Down to see the numbers correlating to which drum voice I'm targeting. I had No idea that side paneled scrolled. Thanks!
If they stay on top of updates and add new useable gadgets I will continue to throw money at it.
I agree. Hafta wonder if even now they are hamstering away with new cities to release or if they feel they've mostly covered it....it's certainly hard (for me) to imagine an ios world without Gadget in it....
@JohnnyGoodyear -- suppose there'll be an Austin gadget? What would it sound like? An acoustic guitar? As good sounding as others within module? Mmmmm, now that would be tasty.
@TozBourne Good question on Austin. It's changing so fast in some ways. The sound of ker-ching maybe? Ah, just being cynical....I am growing fond of the rougher edge of country music available hereabouts and would like a Gadget that looked at that, but in truth it might be more suited to a Novation or Beathawk pack....
