Roland S1 - Getting Started Tutorial - Making a Sound & Sequence from Scratch & General Guide
It was my 60th birthday last December, and Jo bought me this little tiny Roland S-1 Tweak Synth.
Which is part of their tiny AIRA line.
I think it was around £150.
The more I played with it the deeper it got, I mean it's amazing how much they put into this little box.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video.

Thanks I’ll be checking this out soon!
I love my S1… I am pretty experienced with synths and somehow this thing is almost overwhelming to me, there’s just SOOO much you can do with it!!! (The menus are so much to memorize tho)
I think my main problem is that the very tiny knobs make it too easy for me to send the settings into oblivion in no time. And with nearly infinite possibilities all right there at your fingertips, it can go from a funky organ sound into a cacophony of my wildest dreams in a heartbeat lol
😂 also I don’t really have patience for the “Roland workflow” in terms of writing actual compositions using their step sequencer (at least for anything other than drums or bass lines lol) which is v ironic because I own almost all Roland gear 😅
Anyways - cheers, and happy birthday!!! Thank you!!
@ambrosiajam Thanks, and you are right about the menus, they take a bit of time to learn, it’s like reading hieroglyphics😂but worth it in the long run.
That and the sometimes cryptic sub-menu LED display but it’s a fantastic little synth with even more power than the excellent SH01a.
Another thing i always need to remind myself with this synth is that sometimes the simplest patches sound the best! For example, only Two or three small tweaks from INIT and suddenly you have a perfect darkwave synth patch! The fact that they packed this particular synth full of so many features makes my adhd brain want to use them all at once and it’s important to remember that “less is more” really makes a big difference on this guy. Also one more tip (learn from my mistake) I recommend always keeping at least ONE init patch in your soundbanks because it sometimes can be kindof hard to bring those settings back if you overwrite them! I also saw some very nice looking user-made S-1 editors out there, even on iOS…looking forward to trying those out too
Since these are from the Aira line, they also work via my USB in my Roland MX-1 mixer which is AMAZING.. and I actually also recently picked up a J-6 compact and these synths sound VERY nice together, and thru the MX-1 is 🤌.
I do not need a T-8 at all (very redundant in my setup lol) but now I REALLY want one because I actually find myself using the portable battery powered capabilities a LOT. The fact that it’s so easy and quick to sync them and play in the garage or on the couch is actually kind of amazing and now I want all my synths to do that. Heck, I could even find a use for the E-4 vocoder haha! Actually that thing does have the ability to use ANY input, with the right cables, not just a mic… and I could def find a use for the very advanced scatter effect and looper in many situations
I hope they make more Aira compacts now.. maybe a Jupiter or even another effects processor like the E4…
Happy belated bday Doug @thesoundtestroom
Wife and I both have December bdays as well. How are you liking the S1? I’m still tempted by it but kinda leaning more towards the Mc101 or SH-4d.
Has anyone gotten S1 to send audio over UsBC to iPad Pro?
I have a 2017 iPad Pro and it worked with a lightning to usb camera kit adapter, but I didn’t like it because it just used the S1 as the audio interface for the entire iPads audio, meaning I couldn’t figure out how run it as a separate input in AUM… everything was just processed through the S1… so instead I just use the input on my audio interface or I use Aira Link through the USB inputs on my MX-1
I’d be interested if anyone knows how to run it via direct USB and run it as a separate input… maybe I did it wrong? I didn’t spend too much time messing with that tbh…
I suppose if that’s the only way it works, it would be useful to use your iPads speaker as the audio source for your Roland compacts, if you wanted to jam in a mobile setting, such as while on a picnic or something? Lol like in the promotional marketing photos 😂
I thought it was just me.lol. Looks like it can only act as an audio interface. Like you, I don’t find that ideal. I’ll try again tomm to see if I missed something otherwise I’ll just go back to using line in. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙏
Thanks, this is the best bag for your buck synth for iOS:iPadOS/macos.
Happy. Birthday
