That’s not entirely true, my old iPad Air 4 when multithread enable apps outperforms the pro M1 … so it’s really a matter of programming or using multithreaded enable hosts

So what You're saying the A14 Bionic is faster than the M1?!
(I'm on an 11" M1 iPadPro and the A14 based iPad is nowhere near as fast in practical use-cases).

yes, using multithreaded host you had have more instances in an Air 4 than an M1 I single thread hosts. Just try it. I test it using miRack as host

I have done that and my experience is not the same...
(I've tried with on a friends iPad Air 4th gen with some pretty memory intensive apps and the 8GB vs 4GB difference is very, very clear).

  • I have 5 iPads here , including M1 Pro and air4. tests are consistent. You are now talking about memory intensive apps, but this is about audio and AUv3, what test did you do? What AUv3 hosts and what auv3s involved in your tests?

I'm talking AUv3s in AUM, Model 15, Model D, Moog Mariana, Animoog Z instances and slapped on some Moog Pedals as effects until it choked, the M1 came on top due to its higher memory bandwidth.

But what ever works works, I seldom use AUM and focus more on LogicPro for iPad and Cubasis for my use-cases...

And what multithreaded host did you use in the iPad Air 4 for comparing vs AUM single threaded in the M1?

AUMs audio engine is still single-threaded on all devices so that was the one I used for the test.

Cubasis was the host used for the multi-thread test as the other person didn't have a LogicPro for iPad Subscription (He does now and sold the iPad Air 4th gen and bought an M4 iPadPro).

As long as the devices get the job done it really doesn't matter which device it is...

  • Using multithreaded audio enabled in miRack in the air4 the amount of AUv3 instances multiplies by 5-6x!!!, yes I mean 600% gain in processing power.
So really is not a matter of old devices being slow for more modern audio plugins and apps

The iPad Air 4 can still run iPadOS18 so it's not 'old' by definition.
To me a device is 'old' when Apple no longer officially supports it with current iPadOS versions :sunglasses:

This is not a competition, but my pro 10’5 2017 have 300% gain with multithread audio…

    Double post

Hi all, I'm the developer of MooMu, I am excited to be here to answer any questions.

I shall start by responding to the existing comments.

The minimum iOS version: I set was the lowest I could upload to the app store for a new app. When I started reading this post I checked the Apple site again and it says 17, 18 from April 2025.
I can build MooMu to run on earlier versions. For the first update due in a couple of weeks I will see if I can lower this, even 17.0 would be a step in the right direction.

https://developer.apple.com/ios/submit/#:~:text=Build your apps using the, with the iOS 18 SDK.

As for comparing with other modular apps, I feel there are plenty of similarities, but also some differences. Modern music making is about having a varying palette of sounds, and with the pricing of iOS apps it is easier to experiment and create the unique sound now, than it has ever been. I see MooMu as an extension to, not a replacement for the existing palette. MooMu also brings full screen play areas such as the sequences, quad x-y pads and isomorphic keys to the modular arena, I have been having a lot of fun with these both when jamming with my local synth meetup, and when performing for an internet radio.

There appears to be some confusion over the price change, I recently applied a 35% price drop, I am unsure why the price in CDN appears to have increased, but at it current price it is in line with other countries.

The Ui has been designed to mimic a physical modular, well as much as you can on an 11" screen. I love the feeling of playing on my physical modular, but the cost was running in £1000's, so I decided to make a far more affordable app, so everyone can get the experience for less than you can buy coffee and toast in my local café.

The Drums are currently just samples, I am planning a suite of synthesised drum modules for the second update, these will take some time to develop and test, but they are coming.

If you do choose to take the plunge and try MooMu I hope you have great fun, and I will be here to answer your questions.

  • Congrats on the app release and welcome to the forum, @Curlymorphic.

  • @Curlymorphic thank you for taking the time to come and answer questions.

  • @Curlymorphic Welcome, and please post some videos!

  • big ups to this top secret modular synth. Came from out of nowhere! I just got it and its similar to mi rack, but with bits and bleeps to uncover. The presets so far are great, I hope we use patchstorage.com for this! Nice work and yep works in AUM! Cheers.

  • @oceansinspace Thank you for taking the time to look at MooMu, and your kind words. I had not looked into integrating with patch storage, however, it is an excellent idea and I shall look into that today.

  • I have requested that MooMu patches be shared at patchstorage.com. For this to be accepted it requires users to comment on the application. All support for this is greatly appreciated.

    Done

  • Thank you for the comments on https://patchstorage.com/requests/moomu/

Lets see if we can make this happen

  • So I decided to get the app, because why not.
It doesn't have a lot of modules at the moment. My early impression is that it offers the utility of something like a fully patchable godzilla of an ARP 2600, with some added bits like sequencers, fx, wavetables, etc. Nothing exotic, though it does provide enough of the fundamentals that you can build up more complex things.
    It'll be interesting to exercise.

  • Is there a reason why the iso keys have these white lines (strings ?) across them? Hi contrast striped patterns can trigger migraines in some people (no joke). I never really used Geoshred because the UI can make me feel sick. It would be good to be able to disable these lines.

That is something I had not considered, Thanks for the suggestion.

I shall include an option to turn these off in the upcoming update.

  • I am getting the hang and so far it's sweet! Made 2 lil clips so far and the actual sound quality was good as well. I aim to add to patch storage, it's such a great way to learn and back engineer the dope patches. Cheers, and hope you are having fun 2.

  • @oceansinspace We have not had enough votes to be able to use Patch Storage yet, If you would like your patches to be included with the examples within MooMu, I would be happy to include them.

If you wish to do so, open the presets browser and select the patch you want to share, hit the share tool button, and email to [email protected]

  • Following on from all the great support, MooMu's first update was released today. This expansion is all about Midi, both with DAWs and external hardware.
