  • Perfect, thanks guys!

I am considering making the iOS app freemium. Free with 100 presets but can not load user saved presets as in the demo version of SynthMaster 3 desktop. There would be 2 further IAPs to unlock features:

    1. Basic editing IAP would unlock loading user saved presets and would bring the rest of the factory presets.
    2. Advanced editing IAP would unlock waveform/wavetable/multisample editors

When you are in the preset browser the sound is swapped on the fly when selected, If you tap 'Cancel' it goes back to the sound that was used before opening the browser and If you press 'OK' the selected sound in the browser will be loaded and used.

This feels super intuitive to me, but that's just me...

I feel like they are loading the preset when selected. In our implementation we don't load the preset. We have audio previews prepared for each preset in ogg compressed format, and we play that preview.

It's more like a 'live in-place preview', meaning you can preview the presets with existing midi that is already playing and when you find a preset you like you tap can tap OK (or double-tap) to commit the preset change, tapping Cancel reverts the the last used preset before the browser was opened.

Hopefully the OGG previews are an optional download as with a couple thousand presets they will use a chunk of storage...

Yes, exactly what immediately occurred to me…app size/storage space. Make it optional as @Samu suggests.

And would the second iap require that the first had already been purchased or would it include everything in the first iap plus the additional functionality?

What happens if you own desktop? Do you get assess automatically?

We're still trying to decide on that. It will probably be a low cost (like $9.99) "Desktop Crossgrade IAP" purchase.

  • Very happy with that, especially if (as with 2) I can pull down my desktop everything patches too.

Yes that is the idea. You unlock all the features of the iOS app + you can download desktop presets that you own :)

Cool, that works. Happy to beta test when you are ready, been using S3 since it came out.

  • We are improving the workflow to select waveforms/wavetables/samples in SynthMaster 3: Instead of selecting them through long list of menus, now there is a waveform browser dialog. The dialog allows you to favorite resources, and preview them before loading:

Excellent work! Count me in for beta testing. I can test on my Mini 7 in Cubasis. (That's my main environment, but I also have AUM if that piques your interest).

If you're looking for ui suggestions I'd ask that the matrix sidebar be hideable in some way so the 4 main panels can be full size. Otherwise things might get real tiny.

Of your looking for sm3 suggestions the only thing I'd love is a modal oscillator and Resonator effect. Bring on the physical modelling sounds!

After receiving a lot of feedback on the UI/UX, I decided to revisit the desktop design first before moving on to iOS. Mod Matrix wont't be a constant UI element on the right hand side anymore.

I am considering displaying multiple modules on the top row, and all modulation sources on the middle row.

I am planning to provide UIs for each module in different sizes, sich as: Narrow, normal, wide. So that we can fit multiple modules on the screen as opposed to now: You can only see one oscillator, one filter and one modulation source at a time.

More progress :) It will require fine tuning though. Some controls might be too close to each other, since this is a port from desktop. I will need to test "usability" with my fingers once the UI port is complete :)

how it will look on iPad MINI ? i am afraid this layout will be on mini completely unusable ..

It is difficult for me to provide support for all devices. iPad mini has the same dimensions as the iPad (1024x768), so it will use that layout.

I think this idea will be great for desktop, and for the largest ipads. Overall, an improvement.

BUT, please consider usability and readability on smaller screens when you port the ui to iOS.

iOS is a smaller user base, but an even smaller number of those users use the largest screened iPad pros. If you're going to go through the trouble of designing multiple ui sizes then focus on the smallest size first.

Synthmaster is an amazing synth series and one of very few super synths on iOS. It has a lot of controls and so menu diving is expected.

I would consider a UI that scrolls horizontal and vertical with the keyboard overlaid but hidable.
I think the best example of something like this might be Magellan 2 by yonac.
    https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/magellan-synthesizer-2/id1494973247

That synth has a lot of controls but is basically the same layout at ANY size of screen, you just have to do more scrolling if your screen is small.

People WANT to buy Synthmaster 3, they want to use it badly. Please consider making it usable for any size screen. 🙏🏽

My secret wish is that you nail the ui for small screens so well that you consider releasing it for iPhone... 🙀

Drambo is another example of a synth with an infinite number of controls that uses a horizontal scrolling interface that fits any screen size. It even works quite well in portrait mode on an iPhone.

I believe with the interface design you're considering you could make 1 ui design for iOS if you used scrolling:

    • enable horizontal and vertical scrolling of the main interface with the osc / filter lane and the mod / seq / routing lane.
    • Have the keyboard be a hidable overlay that by default does not resize the two lanes
    • Have user options for zoom level of the 2 lanes, and an option for making the keyboard not overlay and instead resize the lanes.

I believe this kind of interface would cover all use cases, on all sizes of screen (including iphone) with 1 ui design.

Thank you for synthmaster 3. It's already a joy to use on desktop. 💕
