Mac Mini M2 - Need suggestions
I recently purchased an M2 Mac Mini and it’s my first Mac since my MacBook Pro that died around 2019. Got the Mini to integrate a desktop into my iPad/iPhone workflow.
I’ve got 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD storage. Would’ve preferred 512 GB, but a Craigslist deal is a Craigslist deal.
With all that out the way, I need suggestions for setup and software. I’m trying to squeeze as much out of the limited storage as possible. I’ve built up a robust library of music creation apps on iOS - what essentials will I need on Mac early on?
A DAW is probably step 1, and I’m up in the air between Cubase and Logic. I’m familiar enough with Cubasis 3 that Cubase will be less of a learning curve. On the other hand, I keep meaning to try Logic and this could be a great opportunity to do so. Open to other recommendations (Reaper, FL Studio, etc.)
What major apps are universal that I can bring over to Mac?
What external storage options do I have? Already have 1TB of iCloud storage and a few external drives floating around but I feel I should get a drive or two dedicated to this machine. Do I need both a Time Machine drive and a Drive for storage? Can Mac run software from external drives?
I have an iRig Duo io that’s been acting as my audio interface for my iPad in tandem with the Apple camera adapter. I’ve thought about looking for a new interface so I can carry the iRig around without unplugging a lot of cables to set up later, but the mini could simplify cable management since it has so many ports available instead of just 1 on iPad.
Is there any other hardware I should consider? What are good studio desk monitors?
Thanks in advance!

If you believe your internal SSD is limited perhaps a solution for the future would be to install the OS onto a fast Thunderbolt 4 drive with increased capacity, thus overcoming the need for the space limitations of the internal SSD.
Turn off iCloud storage for photos on your Mac. That will save a ton.
Logic is the only choice if you have a mac if u ask me - the allure of Cubasis 3 : Cubase 13 loses its luster once you start working in cubase lol… I use Cubasis 3 on iPad and logic on my Mac mini, and I think I always will
If I didn't already have a favorite DAW on the Mac, I'd seriously consider Zenbeats for its inexpensive cross-platform capability. @FizzyLizzy27 - as someone comfortable with GR-2, Zenbeats will be familiar territory. Wait for an unlock sale though for the desktop version. You can save a lot that way.
Logic Pro X is a terrific value in a DAW. You get so much for so little. And there's always Logic for iPadOS (subscription 😐), if you get the overwhelming urge to be able to transfer projects back and forth.
Ableton Live is considered by many to be the premier DAW on Macs. Koala and at least a few other iOS apps provide a free code for Ableton Live Lite. You can definitely get an idea of Live's capability and workflow (which is both loop and timeline based like GR-2) from the Lite version. It's pricey to upgrade though, and they ding you pretty hard for every major update as well.
