Song Of The Month Club - March 2025

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    Fear
    And silence
    Uneasy compliance

    And hope
    Deserts you
    The terrors convert you

    So freeze
Get down on the ground and just stay on your knees

The knife’s blade is always so near to your heart
You know that it’s waiting to cut you apart

    Threats
    And violence
    The price of your silence

    But now
    It’s too late
    You reckon with your fate

    So freeze
Get down on the ground and just stay on your knees

The knife’s blade is always so near to your heart
You know that it’s waiting to cut you apart

The mid to late 1980s went through a great electronic music phase and it’s a shame it had to die out, but this song sounds just like it came from that era and I enjoyed listening to it, I can hear so many different influences from that great era. 👌

My entry for this month is the chamber string arrangement I was lucky to make for one of my all time favourite piano improvisation by the great and too absent @LinearLineman
In short this was only made possible with Logic function to create complex and adaptive tempo track for this kind of free form improvisation. more details about the process in the thread below

A great track very Yotesque (I invented a new adjective!). I especially like your vocals and even more the performance and mix of your backing vocals which complement perfectly the main vocals.

The other thing I like a lot in the track is the very first guitar that can be heard at 0:16. It has this 60s guitar quality that were typically used to play a theme in the bass with plenty of spring reverb (think something a la James bond theme), and I think it is working very well in the spirit of your track. to be honest I believe the other more distorted guitar tends to eclipse its great quality a bit too much at times, and I believe it could have been great to have only this clean guitar without the distorted one, maybe on the first half of the verse under your vocals. Might increased even more the dynamic range of your track. It is a very minor point but it could be worth giving it a try.
Other than that, the track is absolutely great as much of your recent releases.

  • Just listened to Voice In The Silence, Wow! I’m really impressed, are you professional? You certainly sound as if you are, the music is beautiful and atmospheric, your vocals sound just perfect for this song. Great track 👌

I’d like to submit my cover version of a great blues guitar track, it was originally recorded in 1967 by John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers with the late great Peter Green on lead guitar, the track is called The Supernatural, I made the backing track in Cubase SX2, I played my Horner Professional SG Lion through my Line6 Pocket Pod into Cubase, I also used a Ebow MK2 for the sustain.
    Hope you enjoy it.

Very nice playing, and lovely lyrical lead lines. The E-Bow is very skillfully deployed, I wouldn't have known that was how you were achieving the sustain if you hadn't said.

The strings complement the piano beautifully, and I love the way the dynamics ebb and flow and the tempo fluctuations. The whole thing is very lyrical and compelling. Listening to this really gives the sense of an unfolding story, and the constant changes are always interesting.

Thank you, without the Ebow, I would have to crank the amp right up and stand in front of the speakers to get the sustain, not sure my neighbours would appreciate it though lol
There is no real skill involved, it’s just a matter of having somewhere safe to quickly put the Ebow when wanting to use the pick.

So much passion in your playing, perfect control, beautiful sound, in a way you remind me of the late Keith Emerson when playing his classical tracks. Very much enjoyed this beautiful relaxing music 👌

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the cello, bassoon, violin, and flute; Noire for the piano; Jaeger for the singing voice; and Omnisphere for the other instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled The Hidden Room.

  • Here my entry for this month, inspired by Arcade Fire and made with GR2. The drums are sampled from HipHopDrummer

Sounds really good. I think this might be my favourite I heard from you so far.
Can definitely hear the Arcade Fire influence here, and as the track unfurled I was actually clearly hearing vocals melodies sung by Win and Regine in my head. Great track and great production. This one definitely needs vocals to take it to another level.

I really enjoyed this, the synth melodies were great and the bass in the second half had a great texture to it. There is a lot going on but it all gels together beautifully. Great job.

Adding for fun, will check other entries in the next few days as well.

This is the first thing I've written in over a year, thanks to Loopy Pro. It is very rough, just recording vocals and synths by hand directly into Loopy Pro with no other effects or processors. I pulled the raw audio clips into Audacity to arrange them, do some minor volume adjustments to level a bit, add a touch of reverb on vocals and hats, and a some delay to one of the baselines during breaks, just default Audacity effects. No compression, no auto-tune, etc., so expect it to be a bit rough :)

Good song, I like the minimalist synths and the choice of sounds. The vocal is a little pitchy I think in parts but it's not a big deal. The melody is catchy and the backing is also fun to listen to.

The mix sounds fine to me, the lack of compression isn't doing any harm, and the vocal sounds good with minimal processing.

I like the slightly lo-fi aesthetic, it's interesting and original.

Nice work man, I bet this would sound fantastic live. I'd like to hear it with side-chain mixing from the drums up/down so they cut through a little more in places. Good track.

Very nice man!! Did you plan all that by hand?! Fantastic! I'm not familiar with Linear Lineman, but I can very much appreciate why it's one of your favorites. Very well done.

I'd love to hear the strings shine through just a hair more, they feel fantastic with the piano, but just a little further away.

The free tempo aspect you mention immediately made me think of Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek too, and why that has been a challenging song to express electronically with her vocals - and I only say that as an electronic musician; I can also very much appreciate the classical expression of this as it is, free-form and beautiful, happy to be left untainted by the dirty hands of the electronic musicians.

Very beautiful, thank you. I immediately closed my eyes on hearing the first few notes, and didn't even realize there was a video until 2/3 of the way through. Captivating, very easy to sink into completely, unobtrusive while engaging. I like this a lot.

This is fantastic! I find similarities with Apparat, Omid 16B, and others in a similar vein.

It's the second time Arcade Fire has come up as an appreciated group in a week out of nowhere, and I'm going to be honest, I've never really gotten into Arcade Fire. I've not ever heard a piece from them that just grabs me and pulls emotions to the top, never quite hooks me.

But this piece definitely has that, all throughout across the different transitions and elements that come in, it's constantly seeking and finding engaging new spaces as it moves forward, never overstaying welcomes or failing to reach where it goes. Very nice work!

Thank you! Yeah, I had a couple takes of different vocal sections and just picked the ones I liked the most for the moment. A lot of off the cuff while feeling it out.

After a lot of digging over the last couple of weeks, I picked a few core processors and have been whipping up a base template in Loopy Pro with an actual vocal chain. I'm debating whether I want to put Vocal Tune Pro in the chain for light correction. Either way, looking forward to just getting more regular vocal practice in with this approach.

Good to have feedback, I appreciate it!

  • Thank you all for listening to my track and for your nice comments

@richardyot Powerful track, sounds a bit Simple Mind-ish. The low ends are maybe a bit too present to my taste and I would have appreciated some more high ends to give more clarity. Nice lyrics.

@JanKun Just wow. This is a wonderful collaboration with @LinearLineman who used to be more present in the past. There is a real fit between you both and I hope you will produce more tracks together. Wonderful

@DavidEnglish Another great ambiant track. I am very curious to hear some other style from you, I am sure you can produce very original music in all kind of style

@EnergyCrush First track I hear from you (I guess) and this is interesting. I find some similarities with what I am trying to produce with distinctive instruments and catching melodies. I like the rhythm and the chosen arrangement

Not a lot of entries this month. I really encourage people to publish here as we can have some very good and honest feedbacks

Thank you for the feedback. I have lots of different workflows. My main one being traditional songwriting (Indie / alt rock, post punk, post rock, shoegaze, dream pop and electronic (Apparat / Moderat since you mentioned in another comment) trip Hop). But I broadened my horizon a few years back when I started using the app called Staffpad which uses classical music notation with an amazing playback engines of orchestral libraries. For this kind of work I usually stay away from any instrument (unless the piece has complex harmony) and transcribe ideas as they come. I am planning to revisit the mix of this piece or maybe even switch to a brighter and more present string library.

As for electronic musicians, I wouldn't say dirty hands 😉 simply put, Different tools, different approaches

Interesting interpretation of this classic tune. The backing track has some catchy synth hooks. Sounds a bit 2D in its current form and could gain in width with a bit of work on the mix.
As for the vocals, I agree those can be pitchy here and there but they feel real. I wouldn't recommend any auto tuning, it would kill the whole vibe and authenticity. Regular singing practice seem to be the most appropriate solution, or maybe simply improve your vocals monitoring during the performance. You have a pleasant voice don't waste it with over production and effects (unless it is the kind of sound you're after ofc). For the vocal chain, I am very happy with Mixbox (a bit expensive for iOS standard, but full of great sounding hardware emulations especially compressors, channel strips, preamps and EQs). Anyway, glad to have another singer onboard and hope you'll keep posting regularly here.

Lol, well, I certainly find a lot of soul and emotion in electronic music, but I think I also write it in a slightly more traditional way, typically either playing by hand or composing every part including drums, even though I do it by ear and feel and don't usually incorporate much theory (something I've tried to get better at).

It would be great to hear more, I think all styles, but pieces in Apparat and Moderat styles certainly sounds intriguing.
