Are any of you using the base iPad for music production? If so, how is it?
i'm thinking of getting a new 2025 iPad A16 (not the air or pro) and wondering how it would hold up for me using it with my music apps. I mostly do one app or several in AUM at a time and use it to fill in my desktop and/or eurorack setup so not for full production.
Thank you!
Greg

For me personally, it's been a breeze to use. It runs Cubasis 3 and external plugins perfectly fine so far.
If you do buy it, make sure to get the 512gb version so you don't quickly run out of space. All the best mate. 🥂
Have fun with it! I am using an iPad 9th generation in a similar setup - no problem. The only thing that makes me think about getting an iPad pro at one point is the screen size. And if it’s mostly midi, then even my Air 2 on iOS 12 does a good job.
Thank you all!!
I picked up a 9th gen days before they got pulled and have been very happy with it. Similar use as you describe. I also have Ableton Note on it and also use the 1/8 jack to feed samples to my Move. I have an 2nd gen Pro that is, because of tired batteries, a permanent part of my home studio. I can work on a loop on the 9th gen then airdrop it to the Pro and go from there. I ALMOST wish I would have waited for the new base model. The bigger screen would have been nice and an update to the Move made USB-c to USB-c audio sampling a thing. Just recently I bought SynthMaster 2 and that seems to bog down a couple of the hosts but not others. 🤷♂️ other than that, I’m digging mine.
Many of us have discovered that for the money, regular iPads are much better for music production than the pros. The 9th generation original iPad is right now The best iPad for music because it The last one with the headphone jack. You may think you don't need an audio output, but you really do if you are serious about music. The dongle thing doesn't really work, especially if you play live.
Also ipad 9th gen here. 3 cheers for the headphone jack!!!
Logic Pro started crashing after the last update to ios 18, before that more than 2 session players would crash. I ditched my Logic subscription and have not missed it much. Plenty of other awesome apps that work just fine.
If I load too many synths or plug ins that use a lot of memory, sometimes that will bog down the system.
Tera Pro and a few others....
A bigger screen would be nice. Developers that stop using microscopic fonts would be nice too.
I'm ride-or-die with FL Studio Mobile so my 9th Gen has been great (should we start a club -- "Generation 9th-Gen?").
I think I bought it on sale for ~$280 so remembering paying $600 for my original iPad Air with 32GB felt like a steal.
I got 3 ipad 9 as a system.
I need the headphone out to get midi din to this ipad ( the cck is obviously for din ) So all ipads have din.
Its kinda cool having a drum ipad. A synth ipad. A sampler ipad for random plus an arranger ( for pieces of audio ) Within a pattern based system.
Yes, always get as much memory/storage as you can (in addition to the best CPU) for whatever you're willing to spend. If money is tight, look at the refurbished iPads from Apple (which are given new batteries and you can get Apple Care+ for them... always get the Apple 'insurance', Apple Care+).

I thought you use the iPad mini
I do sometimes, but I needed a larger form screen without it being hella bulky. Base A16 iPad with 512gb storagr seemed the way forward. (Meanwhile I'm overdue for an eye exam, lol.)
Can’t do stem splitting with the a16 chip though
True, true. But then again, I don't use Logic Pro anymore. I learned to master my own tracks with Grand Finale 2, and even though Logic's stem splitting is amazing, I can get by with just Koala if I ever needed to split vocals from a track. 😂
@gkillmaster The A16 iPad is the perfect thing for my personal uses. Cubasis 3 and GR2 run on it like a dream, and the larger screen size is great for my eyes that aren't what they used to be. 😂
The base model iPad works very well for me, larger would be too heavy in my hands and also harder to reach the controls while holding it.
I'm stuck with the last model that has a headphones jack as well.
Apple brought the good connectivity back on the Macbooks so whenever they may release a new iPad that is more than a blown-up iPhone, it's going to be mine
I started with LP on my iPhone and was amazed what I was able to accomplish. When I moved up to an iPad I went with the latest offered by Verizon. I'm really pleased with the upgrade. But a USB C hub is essential and a audio interface is also needed if you're planning to use MIDI and standard microphones.
I used to cart around a honking big amplifier, a pedal board and other heavy things. Now I just need the guitar, iPad, my mic stand, the audio interface, a BT MIDI footswitch and a little powered speaker but the speaker is only if the house doesn't have a PA. I'm doing a lot more with a lot less. And every show gets recorded.
Ok thanks @jwmmakerofmusic
Of course mate.
I definitely prefer Cubasis as I can do damn near any genre in it. I've tried Logic Pro, and for me personally it was a bit more clunky for me to navigate than Cubasis 3. Ymmv. Then again, Nanostudio 2 was by far the easiest to navigate by a longshot.
That said, I rarely feel the need to split vocals from a track these days. I'm working on a cover version of "Run" by Sash! featuring Boy George to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sash!. My cover is more modern EDM, and the main vocalist will once again be my friend Anja. ❤️ (She likes to do covers as well as original songs.) I'm also reworking the lyrics a little bit. "Run" was a smash hit in 2002, but the intro is a bit too long by modern standards, and having two pre-choruses seems a bit excessive.
Last year I kept switching between DAWs other than NS2, trying to find a new environment in which to work. My gut told me Matt would sunset NS2 sooner or later, and I needed another "perfect-for-me" reliable environment for client work. My gut was right about NS2, sad to say. Wish I was proven wrong.
Koala does serviceable stem splitting. Not as clean as Logic Pro's AI stem splitting, but Koala gets the job done. Plus one really can't tell too much a difference once the vocal stem is in a mix. Just needs a little doctoring to fit. 😂
Anyways mate, thank you for the friendly chat.
