The DAW Wars

I know it’s not an other topic but I want to vent without anyone reading this.

I can’t make up my mind on workflows that suit my desire to achieve flow.
AUM after a loot of effort really gets me into a flow state that sustains rapid creations.

The other approaches just have too much friction but classical studio recording workflows
make sense for anyone doing work to a professional standard.

If I needed to I’ll change the title to “Reaching Flow with Minimal Friction” so it’s about feelings and
not Apps.

  • What about when it comes to capturing those ideas and perhaps arranging them? Or are you more interested, as I increasingly am, in creating short bits of stuff more than in creating anything to keep?

Right, so can you expand upon what you mean by "can't make up my mind on workflows" and "other approaches have too much friction"? What have you tried and what haven't you tried yet? :) I'm rather intrigued, and I wish to help give advice if any.

I use Drambo for my workflow experience. I found the process of just learning how to build/assemble audio and/or midi processing to be a steep learning curve with less that satisfying results… I call that “friction” or frustration.

Of course, in the early weeks AUM was a steep learning curve but a got music out of the sessions with just a few connections and overtime learned to use MIDI Learn and all the internal FX modules too. Now I can just keep adding channels and synths and FX apps and AUM never crashes. Many DAW’s I tried just kept loosing work and crashing (Cubasis 2). I can get work out of Cubasis 2 or 3 but the steps to add more synths and FX apps pain in the rectum. My bad for buying well over 100 apps and scrolling about pisses me off. Friction.

I see. Yes, I've had that issue with Drambo myself to be fair. Very capable, amazing app, but so deep that it boggles my mind. 😂 I'm still not able to get on with it really.

AUM is amazing and super stable. @j_liljedahl really put his all into AUM and continues to do so. It's amazing really. :) Of course AUM isn't my main workflow as I'm far more used to a traditional DAW workflow as well as a more experimental Groovebox workflow.

Many DAW’s I tried just kept loosing work and crashing (Cubasis 2). I can get work out of Cubasis 2 or 3 but the steps to add more synths and FX apps pain in the rectum. My bad for buying well over 100 apps and scrolling about pisses me off. Friction.

Cubasis 2 was pretty unstable for me personally. Cubasis 3 is definitely far better and more rock solid. And yes, I agree, scrolling to get the synth/effect you want was a pain in the arse, but fairly recently (like last 5 months or so) @LFS and team at Steinberg have added a search function. Just go to "Audio Units", type in the audio unit you wish to load, and voila. :) Definitely cuts down on endless scrolling.

And yeah, GAS is a real nasty thing, lol. On this new A16 iPad, I only installed the plugins I needed rather than all the plugins I've purchased over the years. For instance, Halion, FMClassics, and NeoFM have effectively replaced Pure Synth Platinum and Korg Module Pro (which is why I haven't installed either of those on this iPad, lol). Of course there are certain specialty reverbs for Ambient (Stratosphere Cloud Reverb being my all-time favourite, with Alteza in second place) I can't live without, but for the more "everyday" usages, the internal Reverb and Roomworks SE are perfect.

Koala with Samurai and Mixer IAPs activated is a must-have regarding a drum module in Cubasis 3. All you need is one instance of Koala, and there you have it. Each pad has its own 3-band EQ, so mixing drums within Koala itself is a breeze (for me personally at any rate).

And of course I can't live without my Grand Finale 2 nor my Youlean Loudness Meter for LuFS metering. I'm hoping for LuFS metering in Cubasis itself so I don't have to be faffed about with Youlean anymore. 😂

Anyways, it indeed took me a month or two to become acclimated to the Cubasis 3 workflow, and I'm a master of many DAWs. However, now I'm used to Cubasis 3's workflow. If you need any help, just lmk.

    ...

  • I had a looong, ongoing break to having any time to think music.

I (really!) want to get set back up, and when I do, I am thinking of essentially wiping my ipad and re-installing:

    AUM (playground/quick capture)
    Drambo (playground and sequencer)
    Auria (audio editing)
AEM (almost replacing Auria, so close!)
    Staffpad (orchestral sounds)

    Magellan
    Gallileo
    Drum computer
    Oneshot
    The other Klev percussion apps
    Lumbeats: soft, jazz, future, hip-hop
    Strummer FX

    Pro-q
    Timeless
    Volcano
    Wow
    Rhino
    Mammoth

…and attempt to spend more time playing rather than leaning to play. Life is short! Maybe I can actually get something down before Sköll and Hati eat the sun and moon…
