@richardyot. Lovely smooth sound. The guitars and synths blend super smoothly.
@cuscolima. I like the journey the tune takes you on. Every 16 bars or so there's something new around the bend. The entry of the vocals so late in the tune was surprising. She has a lovely voice and the progressions underneath the vocals work well. I see from Richard's comments the vox is AI? Had me fooled.
@DavidEnglish. Lovely as usual. Just what I needed late night after a long day.
@unlink. Some really unusual twists and turns in this one. Love the groove. Has a bit of a prog feel to it. This scratched an itch I didn't know I had.
@Ailerom. Great swampy vibe. Dug the guitar and the crunchy vocals. I could see the drums brought up a bit more in the mix to good effect, but that's personal taste.
I thought it was a good idea so the drums are louder now.
Why is it as soon as you upload you notice about 3 things you need to deal with? 🤣
Rare burst of creativity that unfortunately has about 4-5 tracks that need finished.
This is about as close to done. I do think it needs another loop around.
Vocals weren’t a priority as I can’t really use the ones I ripped. It’s annoying but not the end of the world. I have a friend who’s going to re do them, maybe altering the heel/baby face reference but keeping the star line.

The sparse arrangement really reminds me of Richie Hawtin style minimal techno, especially with that high synth patch which is very 90s sounding to my ears (a good thing).
Simple, but effective. Not sure how it would sound with a different vocal, but for me the vocal isn't really the focal point of this track anyway.
@richardyot cheers dude! I think by default a lot of my stuff is minimal. Or rather, they end up minimal because I cut about 90% of my work and end up with what I consider essential. At the moment I’m just feeling really good to have something that I’m 99% happy to call complete. I have no idea how the replaced vocal will work, but I agree it’s not the focus of the track. Although, I think it fills a role and need that’s very lacking when removed.
The high synth was a bit of a late edition and a little bit of a happy accident if I’m honest. I had decided to double up the line but using Auria I accidentally put the copied audio into the vocal track, which had bleas slow machine running. I liked what happened. 🤣
@richardyot
Love the echoing guitar solo near the opening. This one has a strong dreamy feel to it that’s expertly balanced with some epic wall-of-sound moments.
@cuscolima
Cool ambient song with lots of visceral percussive and twangy instrument sounds. Has a nice calming quality, while still being interesting musically. The singing voice coming out of nowhere about two-thirds through the piece was a pleasant surprise.
@unlink
Great start with a kind of backroom ragtime piano feel. It then evolves into a bouncy number. Then suddenly does dark and foggy. Evokes a nightclub atmosphere near a harbor. Continues on mixing the dark and bouncy elements. Quite the journey. This one breaks through the musical genres with gusto!
@studs1966
It is different from your usual Song of the Month entry. But like the others, it’s a polished tune with smooth vocals and a strong melody line.
@Ailerom
Top-notch song with an infectious beat and hard-driving vocals. All the elements are strong with this one.
@squeals
Love the 8-bit feel with this song. That 8-bit landscape meshes well with the vocals and lyrics. A kind of anthem to the often-rickety ladder to stardom.
@Ailerom and @squeals don't forget to leave feedback for everyone 👍
It's been a rough month. After, or around the time half my face became paralysed I posted. It's affected my vision and hearing among other things like pain and headaches. Just reading your post made me realise how little music I've listened to over the last 3 weeks.
Ah yes, sorry, I did read your post about this. Look after yourself and get well soon.
No worries, thanks Richard.
Are you heavily influenced by, or trying to achieve the mix style of anyone in particular? I won't say who what or if it sounds like to me, but it's very good. One thing I'll say about the mix is that it sounds particularly good in the non chorus parts. They sound open and welcoming to listen to, I'm thinking Billy Idol - Bitter Taste. The chorus is a bit much to me, maybe just in terms of thickness of everything. Whatever else comes in there, for me and probably me alone, competes with the vocal and takes up too much frequency real estate. I hope you get that my main message is, really great mix.
First thing I heard I really liked was the kick placement. It's a powerful sound in context and having that unpredictable missing kick sound (that's my best explanation
). It's very sparse but that can make it harder to level the elements, and that is done really well. Great levels for an open mix. Something about the vocal is a bit intense though. When it came in I was typing and it gave a small fright
. It's pretty close, and could be perfect, just in my opinion of course, if the level was reduced, or spatially enhanced, and worked a little in the frequency domain to reduce some areas that take away from making the vocal sound smooth and warm like the other instrumentation.
Beautiful opening. That's a nice piano sound. A bit like landing raindrops, it has hypnotic, captivating and comforting sound. When the flute becomes evident the piano seems to settle into the background just a little and then open into the fore from the deep. Its all just a relaxed, floating down the crystal clear stream, birds in the air, sun on my face, cool calm day vibe. But wait, what's this around the bend? A point of interest? Cellos seem to come out of nowhere as I gaze upon the beauty of a heard to deer, carelessly stopping from munching grass to steel a glance at me as I drift on by. I don't want to pidgeon hole it but I'd listen to this to meditate, or to just have breakfast overlooking somewhere nice. It would also be a nice contrast to accompany an intense out of control slow motion car crash as the glass breaks and the car body flies spinning through the air. Nice playing, sweet melody, nice instrument choice. And if you can't tell, I find it really paints a picture.
Great piano choice. I love a messed up upright sound. I like the choice up synthesis for the track, drums are also really nice choice. But, the thing that really grabbed me is how far you are able to take the mood of the song. Maybe that's just me. When the piano stops for the first time around 0.50 it takes on a more eerie and totally different mood. Then the romping bass drum piano lounge groove comes in. So it's gone from a bit crazy happy to a bit dark and foreboding to hey relax and have a drink in a comfy chair in the hotel lobby and then a, what just happened ending. I really have no ability to do that but you taken me on a journey of emotions that seemed to blend perfectly into each next one. I know, what am I actually talking about right? It's just the way I process things.
Ok for this one I was cast back to the nineties. I was in a band where I wanted to become Slash and my band members wanted to make music like this as a direct result of their desire to get laid. Anyway. It's a a good dance groove and the sax is really tastefully placed. Not too much just right. Are you singing. Regardless the vocal is really good. Certainly a style/flavor of voice, and not one I usually seek, but in the context of the right genres, look out! it's really nice. So once the bed is established and I focus on the message the singer is sending, it's delivered very well. Up front, sits perfectly, nice melody. Sounds like something that could have been a dance floor anthem at some point in my life. I don't know anything about genres so no idea whether that's insulting or not.
I'm not listening to this JERK!
Yes, I know what you're talking about and that is exactly what I would like to achieve. Thank you so much for your feedback! 🙏
Thanks for coming back to the thread and offering your feedback - much appreciated
I hope your health has improved since we last spoke as well.
You're probably right about the chorus. I may have been heavy-handed in trying to thicken the sound when the chorus kicks in, to differentiate it from the verses.
Thanks a lot, your feedbacks are gold for me
More great tracks here…
@Ailerom ’s ‘I'm not listening to this JERK’ made me laugh out loud 🤣
