Speculation: Logic Pro 3.0 imminent?

So probably like many others here I’ve been patiently waiting for the next Logic update. Based on the announcement dates of Logic 1.0 and 2.0, I think an announcement later today (Tuesday 6th May) is quite likely, if not then almost certainly within a couple of weeks.

I’m a big Logic Pro for iPad power user and I’m curious about everyone else’s wish lists for the next update.

Personally, I’m still running into some nasty bugs (biggest being stuck notes with every AUv3 instrument) that I’ve reported and I hope get fixed, but feature-wise I’d love a proper UI for comping, MIDI mapping, some new creative instruments (like Ableton have been doing with Drift and Meld), as well some more keyboard shortcuts (basics like changing track tools, direct monitoring tracks, etc).

It almost certainly will be like this.

Just needs a few more producer sample packs ;)

Just performance issues for me really. Crash on loading of project is common. Second or third attempt then works fine. Yeah stuck notes too but I never know if this the fault of whatever AUv3 synth I'm using...

State saving randomly forgetting everything, but again could be the fault of individual AU. I'm talking to you Koala!

Prettier UI for built in synths.

  • Sounds like the current version of Logic is really a bit of a disaster?

No I really don't think so. Generally pretty robust, just few niggles. Crashes and freezes here and there but, for me at least, doesn't lose or corrupt files.

I guess it grates a bit because it's subscription, it's by Apple, it's on Apple hardware so therefore should be flawless?

Yeah I’d agree, it’s generally been incredible (esp vs other iPad DAWs for my personal use), but a little bit of extra robustness would elevate it hugely for me and stop me from missing desktop production every now and then.

That would depend on how long it’s held up in app review.

  • LogicPro for iPad will be 2 years old on May 23rd...
...I do suspect we'll get some kind before that :sunglasses:

Considering how was updated Garageband, and also updates on iLPX, my raw guess is we will NEVER see any major update of Logic on iPad. Small fixes here and there - for sure. Major update - i’m highly in doubt.

  • All I wish for is MIDI and Audio routing on par with AUM...

  • I wish Logic responded to midi commands for transport and midi faders. It’s the number one thing that put me off.

I think, I'm not 100% that it's their German team (or if it's a hired group) Apple have coding Logic for iPad.

Last year there was a big update: new studio instruments, Chromaglow, Session Players, Quantec Reverb, and MIDI routing. There is no reason to believe there won't be a significant update again.

  • My only wish for Logic would be to have a flat fee to just buy it.

Apple has learned some valuable lessons regarding recurring revenue from subscriptions and I don't see that changing. That nothing significant has changed in a while indicates to me that things are probably working out just fine for them. And $5/month for LP on iPadOS is an entry point for people who want to get into music production. I believe their hope is that people "graduate" to LP on desktop.

What some speculate is that Desktop Logic will be 'dumbed down' at some point just like the iWork Suite was 'dumbed down' when the iPad versions of the apps dropped...

...I have a feeling as well that if someone 'graduates' from iPad to the Mac they'll take it for granted that they can keep on using the app and all the AUv3 plug-ins they have bought on the Mac without having to buy everything all over again...

The way I see it, I think Apple will start adding generative ("A.I.") performance and production enhancements which will help people with much of the drudgery of production so they can focus on their music more.

I can't see Logic Pro going the way of Udio or Suno, but it should be possible to throw in vocals if you lack a vocalist, or a guitar solo if you don't play guitar, or a pro-level keyboardist to accompany you if you can't play as well as you'd like.

Maybe you'll be able to whistle a tune and it'll riff off of that basic input. Wouldn't that be nice? As long as you're not ceding all of the musical production to the "assistant" then there should be no copyright issue also.

Yes, pressing the PLAY button on my midi keyboard, seems like a most basic function.
    Midi Learn

However, I ditched Logic altogether aver a month ago, when I updated to IOS 18. It started crashing randomly on project load. So now I'm trying to Love Cubasis.

  • Controller support would be a huge win, and I'd love to see better UIs on the built-in plugins. But somehow I'm not holding my breath on either of those things.

I could easily see another "Studio" musician added to the current lineup (which includes keyboardist, drummer and bassist)... Rhythm guitar seems like an obvious one.

Yeah, I could see that. I really hope they take a swing at some of the more fundamental functional gaps, but Apple's on their big push into "AI" so you're likely right.

  • In used logic on iPad for the first time a few weeks ago to help someone get his keyboard rig set up for a tour. I’ve been using logic as my primary DAW on Mac for a while now (at least 8 years, can’t remember exactly) and I found the iPad version pretty frustrating. That’s a lot of stuff to fit onto a small screen, and I rely so much on keyboard shortcuts and other things that I’ve made on stream deck and a macro keyboard that the touch interface was tough for me. I really like how the touch interface is made for GarageBand on iOS for the most part, but it’s obviously much simpler.

Subscription story too- said musician had his one month free subscription run out just as the doors opened in Philly. He’s not super tech savvy and was into panic mode pretty quickly. Luckily someone else in the group is very tech savvy and was able to get him running again in time for the show. Yes, he should have made sure the subscription was renewed for the length of the tour, but that is a scary way to learn that! I agree with the person above who said that a purchase option would be a good idea.

MainStage for iPad would be a very good thing too.

I’m sure it can’t be that hard to implement midi learn for basic transport functions.

    exactly my experience.

  • In a largely post-Auria world, I find Logic easier to use than the alternatives. As a subscriber I would welcome some updates and more functionality as that certainly helps to justify shelling out every month.

  • As a Cubasis user, I'm curious to see what Logic for iPad will receive next to see if it'll finally make me try Logic again for a month. 😅 LP4i still fascinates me.

    +1 and maybe even semi-regular bug-fix updates…

Here’s one, LP4i has problems displaying audio regions with reverse mode enabled…

…the left clip is the right clip in reverse mode.

I’ve stopped reporting issues to Apple, there’s simply too many of them (600+ so far) lurking around :sunglasses:

The ad mentions iOS and Mac but not Logic in particular. Yeah, I'm gonna be quiet now.

    Nice find!
Maybe they’ve gotten so much feedback on all their software that they need to expand the teams to fix them without postponing them for too long?
