He’s not a lonely man - folk song (guitar, voice, SampleTank bass and flute)

My sister wrote and sang this song on guitar. It’s an acoustic folk song. I added a bass from SampleTank and a flute from the taqsim world piano app (I think). Recorded it in MultiTrackStudio.

It’s about an old gold miner she knew in the mountains. He went into the mountains as a young man, spent his life single in his cabin with his dogs looking for gold. He was a great friend to all his neighbors however, helped everyone, even built a road for others to get to town too. When he got too old to easily care for himself, the neighbors he had helped looked after him, visited him often, made sure he had the necessities for living. He was greatly loved because he had cared for others so much. Although he lived alone, he was not lonely. My sister was friends with this old man and remembered him in this song.

Lyrics below…

I've a got friend,
and he lives back in the hills.
There's no sound of the city,
and his dog sits still.

And he's not a lonely man.
And he'll never be a lonely man.
'cause to many people love him.

He works in an old gold mine.
He spends his nights with his dog by candle light.

And he's not a lonely man.
And he'll never be a lonely man.
'cause to many people love him.

And he's not a lonely man.
And he'll never be a lonely man.
'cause to many people love him.

  • That's a beautiful song, mate. :) Your sister did a great job, and you did a great job enhancing what was already great. :)

Thanks for listening, @jwmmakerofmusic! The first version I tried to do was full of instruments, piano, strings,, woodwinds, but it too sounded too heavy and busy. I started over from scratch and decided simple was more beautiful, so a bass and lone flute was it.

I agree, when it comes to Folk music, less is more. ☺️

Very charming! Your sister has a lovely voice too. If up for constructive criticism, a few of the vocal lines didn't quite work for me, specifically these 2:

    I've a got friend,
and he lives back in the hills.

(I felt there were too many words crammed into that when I heard it)

'cause too many people love him.

(Some people manage to get away with weird phrasing. Bob Dylan mastered it, here something jars for me tho.)

Overall, very enjoyable and nice to hear something different around these parts!

Yeah, her voice is really something. I can't really comment on the music as it's so far from what I ever listen to but, sounds fine.

Here's a little Koala loop from your Harp Chair samples, the first batch I think. All sounds are from that. Can your sister sing something to it (joking). Thanks Dav!

  • Nice song,nice lyrics,nice voice.
    Bravo.

@Gavinski : Thanks! My sister loves honest feedback. Appreciate it. Yeah, it’s more like speaking/story telling in those parts I suppose. She was in a folk song mode when we recorded this. Lately she’s been writing rock songs, and she yesterday played in a Celtic band.

@Pxlhg . Cool! There’s one harp note I was playing with where to me it sounds like a hang drum sound. Glad the harp samples are being useful.

EDIT: Here’s the harp samples link for those interested…

@flo . Thanks for listening, I will pass along your comment to my sister.

    Thanks everyone for listening.

  • Agree with everyone, lovely song, vocals and accompaniment. I'm curious how it was recorded, mic(s) etc.?

In one take. 😉 LOL! I'm just bullshitting around, as now I'm curious for @Dav to answer the same question.

I recorded my sister live using an AKG-C414 B-ULS microphone to an external recorder. She recorded a bunch of these kind of songs in one take. I transferred the song to iPad, and using AUM applied a bunch of plug-ins to make it sound more full, do EQ, etc. I then loaded it into MultiTrackStuido, added bass track and a flute track. My sister sings and plays her songs live.

That's awesome. Also omg I always forget about MultiTrackStudio.

I really like her voice and guitar playing! I think your bass sounds well done. But for a slight critique, I think the flute gets a bit in the way; might have been thinned out a little. Just my fallible opinion.

Thanks! I totally agree about the flute. It does get in the way sometimes. I may do just that, thin it out a tad.

  • I posted another one of my sisters songs a few months ago, I think it turned out well also…

  • BTW, I found myself humming this song a few times through the day - I'd say that's a good sign!

Nice mic, and good job on the mix. Hope you do more.

  • Beautiful song and beautiful story. I like that the vocals have a conversational feel. As though she is composing it as she sings. Also, I like the flute. It gives the whole song the atmosphere of a live performance. Reminds me of a coffeehouse I liked to frequent back when I was young.

  • @Gavinski: Ha, same thing happened to me. Sometimes a melody gets stuck in my head so hard I can’t fall sleep, Especially when I’m playing in a show, where we do 2 or 3 performances a day for a couple weeks straight. Those songs just get burned into my brain for a while.

@pbelgium. Thanks. Working on a few more.

@Paulieworld. Hey paulieword! Hope you’ve been doing well. Thanks for listening.

  • Simple, beautifully played and sung, catchy riff, excellent 👌

  • Thank you, @GeoTony. I’ll pas that along to my sister.
