Abbandono Selvaggio (Wild Abandon, a lively little piano solo)
The original title was Allegro Con Brio until I heard someone say wild abandon, and I thought it was a better fit. I decided to keep the Italian translation.
This track is just an excuse to use every acoustic piano that I own. All the usual suspects. I used Piano Motifs to generate a bunch of bulk two part MIDI data. Then I sliced and diced, and mixed and matched parts in the piano roll editor in Cubasis, editing notes here and there, and adding a few of my own ideas. I think I could have done a better job in the final mix. It’s a bit muddy and there are a few transitions that are a bit rough. I could have spent a lot more time on this, but I was getting tired of listening to it, so I just posted it. I think it’s physically playable with two hands, but not by me.

Nice one. lively is right. It moves. Some really nice patterns in there. Piano motifs continues to amaze me. The dev is so dedicated too, deserves a spotlight in the App Store.
I recently picked up type-b vintage exciter from audio thing, it’s been useful for spicing up some dull mixes.
I don’t think I could play this if I had 3 hands, lol.
I’ll have to take a look at that app. I keep hoping for that “magical” tool that fixes everything in the mix. Still haven’t found it. I think the best thing would be to come back later and redo the whole thing without so much reverb and less layers of piano. The individual patterns are actually pretty simple. When I was a kid my piano teacher had me working with courses like Czerny and Hanon. I treated difficult pieces like exercises. After a while you build up muscle memory and the music seems to play itself. Not so much these days. Oh well, now I just have to think it and let the computer play it. Hope you’re having a nice Memorial Day weekend.
@Paulieworld
Craftily developed motifs resulting in a very nice fast paced piece 🎹!
@azul3D_Apps Thank you Fernando. It's always fun to find new ways to work with Piano Motifs. Never gets old.
Twice as fast and it could be something by Nancarrow 😊
‘I could have spent a lot more time on this, but I was getting tired of listening to it, so I just posted it ‘ is exactly my feeling a lot of the time !
Nice track Paul 👍
Hi Tony. I have heard his name, but didn’t know anything about him. I just spent about an hour reading and listening to his studies for player piano. It’s exactly what I have been wanting to do, except my arthritis, old age, and lack of practice have made that impossible. Now that I have an iPad, MIDI, and the piano roll editor, I can give it a try. If nothing else, it will be good for a laugh.
I actually didn’t get tired of listening to it. It’s just that I kept making it worse. At some point, I just figured that I would have to start all over again to get it right. It’s on my short list, along with so many other things my wife has planned for me. As Kurt Vonnegut would say… And so it goes. Have a great weekend!
The feature of this type of music, when done well, is that one doesn’t get tired of it, per se. it connects music and energy together in a single word “current”. Your/motifs rendering is well done and near perfect. I wonder what dynamics would have added. You know, the old cresc, decresc.
For the sake of conversation, I don’t think the title fits. The production of the notes is 100% “mechanical” energy. If it were an engine it would run. Mozart had it, too, of course, but since the ICE hadn’t been invented yet Mozart would have probably listened to crickets and cicadas instead.
When I have played with abandon (in performance) it still goes somewhere. I can’t help it. It’s like asking a calligrapher to arrange dots in random fashion.
Free jazz can be wild abandon, I guess. Especially with more than one player. No one knows what the hell anyone will do next… even if it’s to come to order for a few measures. Orchestral cannot because you can’t abandon a written piece without it becoming something entirely else. I’d like to hear a concert tune up played with wild abandon.
Here’s a similar idea but more frantic than wild….
And one with a bit of swing….
I use Barkfilter and it’s “Tripleband” preset for this. Ever tried it?
@LinearLineman I liked Patter. The opening works well, like two little polite conversations. I didn't care for the second part with the effects. Then, at 3:17, I really liked that a lot. More like a lively, animated and heated debate. Each hand has a mind of it's own. Enjoyed that a lot.
Most of my titles are just something I came up with at the last minute. I try to use sarcasm... like the Piranha Brothers. The "music" is just what I can come up with given my self-imposed restrictions, i.e. only an iPad, no external keys or controllers. Sometimes it more fun trying to break out of prison than actually escaping. It keeps me occupied and out of trouble, and works up an appetite!
I will listen to your latest posting this weekend. It's always fun to bring old music back to life. I've done that a few times. I see that you did a rendition of Lush Life. Looking forward to that one.
Have a great week, and peace!
Yes! Especially the Tripleband preset. It's probably the closest I've ever found to the "magical" app I mentioned to Dav. I stopped using it a while ago, though. Instead, I try to get as much as I can from each track using just volume and EQ, rather then adding it overall in the master channel. Ideally, I would just like to click "Mixdown" without any effects. I usually end up using a bit of compression. I like MagicDeathEye Stereo. It works well and I like the name. I have also been mixing things much quieter than when I first started. At first, I tried to follow the accepted wisdom of mixing everything to the "correct" levels. Now I just do whatever sounds good to me. Have a great week!
