video synth set-up in flow nodes
i've made a simple video synth in flow nodes
the set-up is simple, but it took me quite some time to figure it out (with some help from the dev)
i thought i'd share it here for the ones interested
i'll try to explain it as i understand it, i'm not a programming nor a tutorial guy ![]()
loopy is sending midi CC [the slider going up and down in loopy] which scrubs through the video that's currently playing, from the orange clip loopy is sending midi notes 0,1 and 2 to flow nodes: each note triggers one of the three videos]
in flow nodes [i am assuming you can set up loopy as shown or use a different MIDI controller to achieve the same]:
§ load three videos, load a midi receive [with the keyboard symbol] and a midi receive CC
§ load a select node and connect the purple outlet from each video to the purple inlet of the select node: this feeds the three videos in a node from which you can select them
§ now connect the yellowish note int(eger) outlet from the MIDI receive [with the keyboard] to the yellowish index inlet of the select node: now MIDI note 0 to 2 sent from loopy will select/trigger video 1 to 3 in the select node
§ now load a metadata video node, this node extracts video parameters from a playing video [we wil need the number of frames from each playing video to be able to scrub through it succesfully later]: connect the purple outlet from the select node to the purple inlet of the metadata node
§ load a sample node: this node 'samples' the selected video from the select node: connect the purple outlet from the select node to the purple inlet of the sample node, you will see a video frame appearing in the sample node, but a video will not yet be playing as the sample node still needs to be instructed which frame to play
§ load a math operation node and set it to multiply [which it is standardly set to by the way, you can set it to multiply by selecting it and then selecting the parameter icon on the right], this node is needed to 'combine' the frame count from each video and the incoming CC, it will then output the frame values [adjusted to the frame count of the video playing at the moment] which will scrub through the video by adjusting the CC slider in loopy, remember the sample node needs to 'know' which frame to play --> the connections you need to make to achieve the above: connect the yellowish frame count outlet from the metadata node to the yellowish leading value inlet of the operation node, connect the yellowish midi cc node outlet to the brighter yellowish trailing value inlet of the operation node, connect the yellowish value outlet of the operation node to the yellowish frame index inlet of the sample node
et voila [did not find the right accent] there's your working video synth ![]()
[assuming your midi connections got in a linked state, see the virtual port issue described by @wim in the other flow nodes thread]

Comments
here’s the zipped flow
note that the video nodes still need videos loaded in them (else the zip would have been too large to upload here)
and that you have to set up and link the MIDI control (I used CC 6 and notes 0,1,2)
will look into the shader business this weekend…
@janpieter - You are the man!!
I'm not sure I would have ever figured that one out. The need for the sampler was something I just didn't figure on.
I think you saved me a minimum of 10 hours scratching my head.
That’s really cool, thanks for sharing. I like the look of this app, and it seems super useful, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t enjoy the process of learning how to use it. Even with a great manual it looks like it would be way outside my comfort zone. But when the documentation is not even remotely adequate, I know I’d never put the work in, or be willing to tolerate the inevitable repeated frustrations. I haven’t really kept up with all the improvements VS has had over the years, can it get in this ballpark now? I remember the main limitation was that you couldn’t do much creative processing of imported videos, but I think I remember it improved in that regard?
I did take me hours but I like the puzzling (as you do I guess)
this is exactly why I’m into flow nodes: you can do the things (video sequencing) here you can’t do in VS for instance
and the rendering engine seems quite smooth to me
To be honest, Imaginando VS very powerful, and far more accessible.
But it's fun working with nodes this way.
yes, reminds me of the freedom to achieve exactly what you want to do in loopy pro [if you want a knob that does this or that, you have it or can make it], though this one's a lot more puzzling..
I’m going to try this out tomorrow and see if the interface logic starts to click for me.
Thanks 🙏
Thanks a lot man.
you’re all welcome
playing with videos..
Thanks. That was cool and inspiring.
Cool! Can you share that setup too?
Thanks!
I've imported your VideoMixer.flow into the desktop Flow Nodes. I've imported videos into the 4 states to the left. There's nothing in the video synth 4 container, and I'm not sure what's supposed to go into the Sample 1 container... in order to get anything into the Blend container.
I'm trying to set this up to work like your demo, so that I can see how you set it up... but from what what I can tell... after I opened from the VideoMixer.flow file you shared, it looks like all the important parameters and such are missing.
Maybe iPad created flows don't work on the desktop flow install?
hmm, guessing your MIDI is not connected (there’s MIDI notes playing the first three videos and MIDI CCs scrubbing), get into the video synth 4 node (by clicking I think) and show me what’s there..
do you have loopy? Then I can maybe send you the MIDI driving this flow.. (tomorrow that is)
That must be it! (Tomorrow will share)
Having the same issue with this Flow nodes template on desktop too. I've got video synth 3 imported. I've imported video clips and I've connected midi cc. It looks like my nanokey is connected and sending data to the nodes.. but there's not anything in the Metadata 1 Resource node in order for there to be any results sent to the final Sample 1 resource node. What am I missing here?
Here it is.. good luck
The order messages appear here sometime’s a bit strange (i first missed @offbrands diagnosis)
Am I supposed to somehow import this one into the previous video synth 4?
I'm about to give up on this. I thought if I could see a functioning template I could reverse engineer and figure out the logic, but I can't even get any of these you've shared to function.
thanks anyway
Now desktop version keeps crashing as @wim reported
This is extremely frustrating. On one hand, I'd like to do what @janpieter is doing with Flow Nodes... but I can't even get any of the generously shared Flow Nodes templates to work by simply putting in my own video clips and sending my own midi... that indeed appears to be connected and sending data to the nodes.
I can't tell if the app simply isn't working? Or, if I'm doing something wrong... then... it crashes.
On the other hand... I'm beginning to think my time would be better spent getting more familarized with VS instead... as previously mentioned.
I think I'm going to walk away from Flow Nodes for now. If I can't figure out how to at minimum... blend a couple of videos... add some modifying effects like color or hue change... and control the scrubbing, blend, and modifying effects with midi cc messages... by tomorrow... I think I'm going to cut bait, refund, and delete for now.
Well... I haven't used Apple Motion in a long time on the macOS desktop, but evidently you can control parameters with midi via the Audio Midi Setup.
It wasn't especially straightforward, but due to actually having documentation and a manual
within a half hour I was able to do the minimum described in my previous post, ie. layer 2 video clips, add some modifiers like color channels and opacity. Then, I was able to use sqsl Strips to send midi cc messages to control parameters, use the control knobs on my nanokey to control effect parameters, and... even use notes played on the nanokey to control effects.
So, since I was able to do the minimum stated within a half hour without even knowing Apple Motion much at all, vs the 3hrs I've spent in Flow Nodes and have got nowhere... I think I'm bailing on nodes and will get more familiar with Apple Motion instead. Thanks to @janpieter for at least trying to send functioning templates.
Flow Nodes looks like it's very capable, but I think I'll get much further in Apple Motion without needing to spend as much time learning a somewhat cryptic interface that has little to no actual documentation yet. I'll revisit it at a later date perhaps... once it's matured a little more with hopefully a good tutorial out there to get you started.
Your cranium size won't increase at nearly the same rate though.
