ANALOGyDR by Rob Jackson Music (Released)

ANALOGyDR Drum Synth (AUv3)
ANALOGyDR is a virtual instrument plugin that can run standalone, or in any AU compatible host such as Logic Pro or GarageBand. Please note that the standalone version does not include a built-in keyboard - you need to connect a suitable MIDI device to play the synth.
*** IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ ***
ANALOGyDR is a single voice (monophonic) virtual analog synthesiser designed specifically for creating drum and percussion type sounds. Please note that it is not a pitched instrument for playing melodic lines, and does not include a rhythm pattern sequencer. To create a virtual drum kit with ANALOGDR you need to load multiple instances on separate tracks in a DAW such as Logic or GarageBand and record MIDI notes into each track.
Design Overview
ANALOGyDR is a tribute to the now legendary vintage analog drum machines that used simple synthesis engines to create their sounds by combining basic oscillators and noise sources.
ANALOGyDR has two variable pitch sine wave oscillators, along with white and pink noise generators, three filter types and an analog flavoured drive section. Despite the basic design, ANALOGyDR can create quite a wide variety of sonic textures, and the factory presets include a selection of percussion sounds inspired by the Roland CompuRhythm CR-78 (*), along with some interesting effects such as emulations of a cracking whip, a cardboard box and a mouse trap!
The single voice architecture of ANALOGyDR is also useful in situations where you might want to add one or two additional percussion sounds to supplement your favourite drum machine app and gives you the flexibility to apply different effects processing to each ANALOGyDR track.
Alternatively, use ANALOGyDR as a sound design tool to create your own unique percussion sounds that you can record and then load into your favourite sampler app.
The iPad previews were created using multiple ANALOGyDR tracks in GarageBand, plus some reverb and echo from the built-in GarageBand effects.

Here's a little demo in GB too

Pretty darn cool!
Got it, @Rob_Jackson_Music. And I wouldn’t complain if you decided to take on a full blown Simmons drum emulation in the future. Just saying…
I like it a lot. 😎
I'm unaccustomed to trying to do drum synthesis without pitch decay, but that's a nice challenge. I like how the two oscillators interact.
My only complaint is I think making midi note 48 the highest available trigger note is too limiting. I'd at least have it cover the full GM drum map range of 35 to 81.
I know it somewhat goes against the spirit of these apps, but a reference to the closest note corresponding to the frequency of each of the oscillators would save time if trying to approximately tune drums.
‘To create a virtual drum kit with ANALOGDR you need to load multiple instances on separate tracks’. This I happen to find a big bummer, wasting slots to create a drummachine. If it was like Blip Box, you can make multiple instruments inside it, and a sequencer will run all of it, takes just 2 slots for 16 instruments.
You could try to load them in apematrix inside your DAW.?
I have found apematrix very useful for this kind of thing!
I do almost everything in Apematrix!
But my point is, this is not a convenient way of working, you will loose almost a complete Matrix if you want to make a drummachine.
“Lose” or “use”. Glass is either half full or half empty
I've recorded into Koala so far, and then use that sequencer. Niema problema! Many people separate the drum tracks anyway so I don't see a big issue. One active key though, what's up with that?
Same! And then octachron to sequence the pads. Ain’t a bad workflow. If you want a drum synth with all those features, they’re definitely out there (Battalion, DrumComputer) but way more pricey. This is why I like robs apps. They’re easy on the wallet, usually just do one thing, but do it oh so well!
I just have to ask: why add Octa? You don't like the seq in Koala? Just seem like overkill but maybe I'm missing something. Hmm, thinking while I'm writing, more options to control the various hits, of course. Never mind me 🫣
@Pxlhg
The added features that aren’t in koala like probability. Also the ease of use for the ones koala does have like velocity. And ya, I don’t really like the system in koala all that much when it comes to “setting” drum patterns. But if I’m “playing” the pads, koala definitely shines (I recently found you can set the pads for velocity in koala [top of pad high, bottom of pad low]). Old dogs/new tricks!
Sure! Koala has probability as well (the dice), just so you know.
I didn’t, thanks!
A few first impressions/wishes:
Love the sounds, but since it’s a single instance it would be great to be able to chromatically play the instrument.
Playing kicks, woodblocks, bongos etc chromatically can quickly enhance a track.
Maybe 2 more faders to define the upper and lower note range?
And more expressive control via velocity would be amazing, maybe another fader to assign an envelope from velocity to the filter or some such.
In fact the more I think about it I’d love Mr Jackson to try his hand at recreating the Pearl Syncussion, I mean it’s all faders and you could cut it in half to fit this single voice format perfectly.
There still isn’t a good clone of it in IOS.
ANALOGySYNC perhaps?
It would be a darn good seller I’d bet.
I'm sure you know of the Syncussion emulation by Aly James Lab for desktop...
https://www.alyjameslab.com/alyjameslabsy4x.html
Howdy and thanks for the purchases and feedback - much appreciated!
Just wanted to talk to some of the points raised...
It being single-voice, is by design. Multiple voices would entail either supporting a mixer stage, multi-out support, or both. And then once you've got all that going, then it would kinda make sense to add a pattern sequencer too right?, and make it a fully-fledged drum machine.
And funnily enough, ANALOGyDR borrows the voice design from a fully-fledged drum machine I did for Voltage Modular on desktop a while back called PERCSTATION.
Not sure if I'll do a fully-fledged drum machine for iOS though as there are quite a few of those already, but never say never...
The limited velocity response was perhaps one of the design decisions that I flip-flopped on the most, so that's duly noted
The idea was that the response would be more like the old analog machines where you just had a normal and accent voice level.
Regarding pitched playback, that would entail a pretty major re-working of the voice oscillators and would add to an already, by my standards at least, a fairly complex and busy UI. Nobody's suggested it here (yet...) but there are also some related technical reasons why FM isn't supported as it is in the Syncussion module for example. Speaking of which...
I'm not into doing clones or emulations to be honest, plus I don't have one to clone! And it's worth noting that those few sliders on the Syncussion actually are multipled by the 8 different "osc modes". My current super simple generic UI doesn't really handle that sort of thing (yet...) so the mapping currently has to be 1:1 for UI control and underlying plugin parameter.
And... I hate to raise the commercial aspect, but it does eventually have to come down to a balance between development effort / features and the selling price. At least that applies in the case of when you're trying to scrape a living doing this sort of thing!
So when all your apps are less than 4 bucks, there are always going to be fairly significant compromises...
Anyhoo, It's really cool to hear about ANALOGyDR being used as a percussion sound deign tool, then re-sampled and sequenced with other apps - that was very much one of the use cases I had in mind when sketching out the basic concept.
I consider many of your new apps must-buys, @Rob_Jackson_Music. It looks like you're hitting an unmet market with the low-price app model right now, but I think there may also be room in your lineup for some experimentation with pricing and a bit more in terms of app sophistication.
Of course, I'm not you so I cannot say what are the expectations of your audience, but I'd take a few rolls of the dice and experiment with things every now and then. Maybe you'll get some more hits. Looking forward to whatever comes next.
Ah I see, thanks for explaining, totally makes sense.
Fantastic core sound, really feels like you’re able to tweak the insides of an old 70’s drumbox.
I just found it makes a lovely dub siren if you play with the pitch live with long decay and bandpasss filter through say a Ratshack Reverb.
I was blessed enough to complete my Analogy collection with DR, and I am very impressed with the quality! I’m only using AUM @ the moment, so I tried it in Harmony Bloom, OCTACHRON, Euclidean, Autofills, Binarhythmic, Drambo and it works and sounds fantastic! I don’t think there’s a better drum synth than AnalogyDR at this price point especially with the quality it offers.
I know a lot of people feel like FAC DK is the premiere drum synth, and some use BlipBox as a budget alternative, but imo - AnalogyDR is now the king of budget friendly Drum Synth - the beats sound great! I was really surprised by how good it sounds and the flexibility. You can create drum sounds in it, that you cannot in apps like BlipBox/Tekno/punchline. If anyone is having trouble setting it up in their sequencer of choice- hit me up and I’ll help.
I can post some AUM templates and custom mappings if needed. It’s been an epic week between Ova midi, analogyDR, and the Yonac stuff.
This is a great drum synth that I think everyone should have if you’re into @Rob_Jackson_Music Analogy series or if you’re a Drum Bro. There’s not a single garbage offering by this fella and if you haven’t been impressed with it, I’d love to change your mind.
I dunno. I like it well enough, but don’t like that I need to set up so many plugin instances just to put together a kit. The thought of it just makes me want to use something else most times.
I’d greatly welcome a multi-tab version with eight modules and a way to save presets in the app. I’d pay up to 4x the single app price for something like that.
yeah, it kinda reminds me how I was using handclapper as a drum sampler, load up 3 instances with kick,Snare,CH. I've been using it with Euclidians 4 lane seq.
seems like the more drum apps that come out, the more I appreciate Hammerhead, and miss redrum.
still loving the dense drum sounds i get with DR. I wish i could save them better.
I've found that the Analogy series sound fantastic with @quantovox 's Ringotron.
Not sure why I was so surprised, as RingoTron is my favorite AU effect of all time and use it on everything, but it feels like it's soulmates with Analogy series and not just a hot side piece.

I agree. Cool sounds, but it’s far too much trouble to set up and use as a drum kit. I’d much rather Rob put in the time to come up with a real standalone drum machine or innovative drum kit to compete with (for example) FAC Drumkit.
At the risk of repeating myself, something like a Simmons SDS drum module would be just about perfect for my purposes. 😉
ick. 😝
Haha. Maybe we have different ideas about HOW to use the Simmons sound. I veer more towards Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, Prince, Fashiøn and other groups that were pushing the sounds in new directions. I'm not in the Kajagoogoo camp.
Thanks so much for bringing Ringotron to my attention! What a great little plugin... Tickles lots of my itches. It would be sweet if it had one of Robs random buttons!
We need an ANALOGyBass real bad.
