Sync Ableton Move to Loopy Pro
So far I’ve set midi sync in Move settings to out and pointed Loopy at all available Move ports in sync setting but no go.
In fact something weird is happening because Loopy audio engine crashes when I connect Move to the usb hub. I have to disconnect the audio interface and restart loopy to get it working again.
I have a feeling that there’s some conflict between the iPad and Move wanting to be usb hosts?
I didn’t think that was possible but can’t think of why this isn’t working.
When I had Novation Tracks connected in the same way it just worked.

You're right - they both want to be hosts. The best way to connect an iPad and Move (and the way recommended by Ableton) is with the CME Widi Bud Pro Bluetooth adapter plugged into the USB-A port on the Move. This works brilliantly and opens up all sorts of possibilities. I love using Scaler to drive Move - and you can now use the Move as an audio interface over USB-C, which opens up even more.
Depending on what you are wanting to do you could also try Ableton Link for sync purposes.
Thanks for the quick response.
The idea was to sync up Move to my rig and not control Move. Arguably the most exciting part of Move is its sequencer and it would be nice to run it alongside other things or control other gear with it.
The sounds on the move are probably its weakest point so I’d see no point in feeding it midi. Also the Bluetooth midi still isn’t perfect so I’d use a wired connection. The dongle also sets you back £60.
Thanks for the ideas though.
Cme Widi bud pro dongle 22% off on Amazon (uk) until July 11th £43 down from £55.

Also there’s the Nektar Widiflex USB which is the same thing rebadged (I believe) - looks like that’s available a bit cheaper.
…and for clarity, the dongle is for sending midi out of Move, works well for me.
Ok thanks.
It’s strange because when I connect it via the usb A port using a cable Loopy Pro doesn’t see it in either midi sync sources or destinations. My guess is that Move only uses the USB C port for sync.
Did you try using LINK over WiFi?
@supadom : have you run a standalone midi monitor like show midi running after a reboot with no other apps running or devices connected in order to see what midi the iPad sees from the move?
This is exactly how I would do it.
I’m not keen on LINK due to inability to stop start at random points on the bar and WiFi will stop working as soon as I’m in a different venue. I know there’s portable WiFi networks but those have their issues other than the fact that they’re just another thing to think about 😅🙏
I’ll try that. Good idea, thanks.
The dongle can also be for sending midi in to Move.
I’ve used my phone as an access point at a live show to Ableton Link the iPad with Pioneer DJ FLX-4 (Rekordbox running on a laptop) over WiFi. Risky? Yes. Have I ran into any problems with it? No.
I have a complex set up involving midi and audio looping with acoustic instruments as well as Impaktor via boppad etc etc. I really don’t need another thing to think about. 😇😅
According to the manual usb a can send midi notes but sync isn’t mentioned.
It definitely sends midi clock and midi start/stop
If you don’t want to use a Bluetooth midi dongle you could use something like a Roland UM-ONE USB to MIDI cable.
With a recent firmware upgrade you can now specify individual midi channels for each of the tracks.
I have no idea how you’ve managed that. I’m on latest firmware but when I plug move to iPad using usb A port I don’t even get Move on the list in midi scope. Midi only works from a controller into move or if I have Link enabled I get gadget to respond and link up but it still doesn’t show in midi scope.
If Gadget responds, it is surprising that MidiScope doesn’t see it. Have you tried ShowMidi? You will see at a glance if the OS sees it.
You can’t directly connect Move and an iPad using a USB cable as they both are hosts. I’m using the WIDI Bud Bluetooth dongle - but you could use a USB to MIDI cable - but you’d need a MIDI interface for the iPad.
Ah, there you go, another dongle 😂☺️😇
Ok, this one has helped. I actually already had the cheap £5 version of the above and it indeed works when plugged into midi out of my zoom and the usb A on Move. Thanks.
However the usb C port is deaf to midi clock when connected to midi out on my zoom.
The USB-C midi implementation only works in Control Ableton Live mode, not sure why they did that. It is possible for apps to tap into whatever protocols they are using, as the Melodics app supports audio, midi and start/stop from the iPad over just the USB-C port.
Hopefully they may improve the midi implementation in the future - it has been mentioned in discussions about future direction - and they have incrementally improved other aspects of midi over recent firmware updates.
